2007 News & Signing Updates

(6/21/07)- 1st Annual Golden Eagle Football Excellence and Desire Scholarship Awarded

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football staff is very pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the Golden Eagle "Excellence and Desire" Scholarship. Each player will be awarded $300.00 for their achievements academically in the spring semester of 2007. Factors considered were term G.P.A., rigor of class schedule, commitment to academic support services including study sessions, tutors and supplemental academic training sessions.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston Academic Assistance Center (AAC) and Student Support Services (SSS) have been instrumental to the success of Golden Eagle football academics. Each August during training camp, members of the AAC and SSS have provided student success workshops for the football program. During the academic year additional sessions are offered for the entire campus and the football team was in attendance for nearly all of them.

The coaching staff would also like to recognize David DeMuth and Brenda Miller for their ongoing support during study sessions. Golden Eagle football hopes to expand this program in the fall.

In January, Golden Eagle football was given additional money for scholarships. It was decided at that time to earmark a certain amount to award academic success. The team was made aware of this opportunity and they were encouraged to compete in the classroom the same way they would compete on the field.

Twelve players were awarded this prestigious scholarship.

(6/5-6/07)- Golden Eagle Football Camp a Huge Success

(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston Head Football Coach Shannon Stassen and his coaching staff held a youth football camp on June 5 and 6. The camp was held on the UMC Campus and was for boys and girls in grades two through seven. The camp ran from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day and participants received a camp t-shirt and lunch was provided each day.

A total of 37 young athletes participated in the two day camp making it a major success. Skills covered by Coach Stassen and his staff included the fundamentals of passing and receiving, basic stances, proper footwork, punting and kicking, offensive and defensive drills and a scrimmage.

"We are very pleased to offer a camp like this for the young students of Northwestern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota," said Coach Stassen. "One of our major goals is community outreach and to establish a great relationship between the University of Minnesota, Crookston football program and this region. (4/2/07)- Golden Eagle Football Adds Hennings, Schreiber and LeClair to Coaching Staff

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) continues to demonstrate its commitment to athletics and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), as Stephanie Helgeson, Director of Athletics announced today the hiring of three new coaches to the Golden Eagle Football program. Accepting the two full-time positions were David Hennings and Justin Schreiber. Jim LeClair accepted a part-time position with the program.

David Hennings is a familiar face around the Golden Eagle football program. He served as a part-time assistant coach at UMC for the past seven seasons. During his first three seasons he coached defensive backs. The last four seasons Hennings coached wide receivers and quarterbacks. Prior to his full-time position with the Golden Eagle football program, Hennings was a part of the East Grand Forks Senior High School football program since 1974 and was the head coach from 1992-1999. Academically he taught History and Social Studies at East Grand Forks Senior High.

Justin Schreiber etched his name into the record books as a quarterback for the Golden Eagle football team from 1999-2002. In his four seasons he set several UMC offensive records and was named an Honorable Mention member of the 2002 Don Hansen's Football Gazette Pre-Season All-American Football team. Following his four years of eligibility, he became a student assistant quarterbacks coach at UMC while he finished his degree in Sport and Recreation Management. During the 2006 football season, Schreiber was the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and defensive backs coach at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School in Glyndon, Minn. Prior to his position at DGF High School, he was a graduate assistant running backs coach at Division II Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he is working on his Master's Degree in Education Administration.

Jim LeClair is a University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Hall of Fame member. He played football at UMC from1968-1969 and graduated with an Arts and Sciences Degree from UMC. During his collegiate career, LeClair was named All-Conference, Team Captain and Most Valuable Player at UMC. He went on to the University of North Dakota to obtain his four year degree and play football. At UND, he was named All-Conference, Most Valuable Player (NCC) and All-American. LeClair was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1972 NFL draft and went on to play 12 seasons with the Bengals and two seasons with the New Jersey Generals. Following his professional football career, he was the head football coach at Mayville State University from 1986-1988 and currently owns and operates LeClair and Associates in Mayville, N.D.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Cody Brekken (Crookston, Minn.)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Cody Brekken from Crookston, Minn., as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Brekken is a 5'11, 170 lb, outside linebacker, from Crookston High School of the Northern Lakes Conference. As a junior, Brekken was an All -Conference selection and selected as Crookston High's Defensive MVP. As a senior, he earned All-Conference honors, All-State Honorable Mention, Northern Lakes Conference MVP, along with being voted Defensive MVP, Team MVP and the Most Dedicated for Crookston High School.

Brekken plans to major in Sport and Recreation Management and minor in Coaching at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Allen and Anita Brekken.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Tyler Dugan (Irvine, Calif.)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Tyler Dugan from Irvine, Calif., as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Dugan is a 5'11, 185 lb, safety / long snapper, from Fullerton Junior College. At Irvine High School, he was named 1st Team All-City, and All-League as a junior and senior. He was recognized as the Most Improved on his team following his junior season. As a senior, Dugan was named 1st Team All-CIF, Team MVP and was a member of the North/South All-Star game.

Dugan plans to major in Sport and Recreation Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Mike and Glenda Dugan.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Carson Johnson (Gary, Minn.)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Carson Johnson from Gary, Minn., as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Johnson is a 6'4, 265 lb, offensive lineman, from Fertile-Beltrami High School of the Valley Plains Conference.

Johnson is undeclared at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Peter and Cindy Johnson.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Jabari Williams (Long Beach, Calif.)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Jabari Williams from Long Beach, Calif., as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Williams is a 6'4, 195 lb, wide receiver, from Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minn. At Port Allen High School, he was a member of the 3A State Playoff football team and was named 1st Team All-District in basketball his senior season.

Williams plans to major in Business Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Bobby and Vanessa Williams.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Danny O'Neill (Hancock, Iowa)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Danny O'Neill from Hancock, Iowa, as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

O'Neill is a 6'3, 185 lb, safety, from Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls, Minn. He earned All-State Honors in football and track in high school.

O'Neill plans to major in Business at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Tom and Julie O'Neill.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Tyler Nesset (Albert Lea, Minn.)

(Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Tyler Nesset from Albert Lea, Minn. as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Nesset is a 6'0, 215 lb, kicker / linebacker out of Albert Lea High School of the Big Nine Conference. Nesset plans to major in Agricultural Education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Connie Nesset.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Shawn Reich (Grand Forks, N.D.)

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Football program is excited to announce the signing of Shawn Reich from Grand Forks, N.D. as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Reich is a 5'10", 160 lb, cornerback, out of Grand Forks Central High School. At GFC, he was the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year. He was a three year letter-winner in football and a two year letter-winner in track and field. Reich was a member of the 2004 State Runner-Up and 2005 State Champion football team and was named an All-EDC (Eastern Dakota Conference) Honorable Mention cornerback. Academically, Reich is a member of the National Honor Society.

Reich plans to major in Information Technology Management (ITM) at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Rodney and Alice Reich.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Zachary Mickelson (Grygla, Minn.)

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Football program is excited to announce the signing of Zachary Mickelson from Gygla, Minn. as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Mickelson is a 5'11", 235 lb, defensive lineman out of Grygla High School. He was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection in high school and earned the Grygla Bluedevils Defensive Lineman of the Year Award.

Mickelson plans to major in Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Tim and Tami Irlbeck.

Golden Eagle Football Signs Riley Zsedeny (Pelican Rapids, Minn.)

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Football Program is excited to announce the signing of Riley Zsedeny from Pelican Rapids, Minn. as the National Letter of Intent signing period opened today.

Zsedeny is a 6'1", 315 lb, defensive tackle out of Pelican Rapids High School. He was a starting member of a Pelican Rapids football team that won the Heart O' Lakes Conference three years in a row and was a Section 8 runner-up two years in a row. Academically he was a member of the tri-college math team for six years in high school.

Zsedeny plans to major in Wildlife Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is the son of Gene and Linda Zsedeny. Riley Zsedeny- (Zseh-deenee)
