(11/15/05)- Allen Signs Early with Golden Eagle Volleyball

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball coach Dave Simon announced today that Ashley Allen from Buffalo, MN has signed early to play volleyball for the Golden Eagles.

Allen, a 5-foot, 11-inch, outside hitter, played her high school volleyball at Buffalo High School and is a former teammate of Golden Eagle setter Cassie Yates. While in high school she earned recognition as an All-Conference player. During her senior season she averaged 4.14 kills/game and 3.98 digs/game while leading her team to the section 2AAA semi-finals. All totaled, she amassed 377 kills, 362 digs, 57 aces and 25 blocks in 29 matches in 2005.

"We are very pleased to welcome Ashley Allen as the newest member of our Golden Eagle Volleyball family. Ashley is a perfect fit with our program and our needs," says head coach Dave Simon. "She is an athletic outside hitter who performs equally well on defense as on offense. She has an explosive jump and arm swing which is something we are losing in our seniors. She possess' great experience having played for Coach Dennis Axel at Buffalo and with her club team Minnesota Select. That experience will transition her well to the collegiate game. We look forward to Ashley enjoying much future success as a Golden Eagle."


(11/10/05)- Golden Eagle's Season End at Hands of Mustangs

Today's loss to Southwest Minnesota State can be summed up in two words, Erin Contons. The sophomore compiled 21 of SMSU's 54 kills to help the Mustang's sweep the Golden Eagles 3-0.

Going was tough offensively as well as UMC finished the match with a .127 attack% to SMSU's .345 attack%. Senior Jo Hejny finished her UMC career by leading the team in kills with 10. Junior Erin Flynn finished with 8 kills and a .350 attack%. Junior Katie Delohery finished her junior season assisting on 18 kills.

Conton's led the Mustangs in kills with 21 and an attack% of .327 followed by Jen Otto with 10 kills and a .471 attack%.

Southwest Minnesota State will now play the semi-final match against MSU Moorhead. It is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn.

(11/4/05)- UMC Ends Regular Season with Sweep of Beavers


(Crookston, Minn.)-On Senior Night, the University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team defeated the Bemidji State University Beavers by a score of 3-0. UMC jumped out early and took game one by a score of 30-17. The Golden Eagles took game two with a score of 30-22. UMC sealed the victory and the season sweep of the Beavers by taking game three with a 30-22 victory.

Fittingly on Senior Night, the Golden Eagles were led by their two Senior Captains, Joan Ebnet and Jo Hejny. Ebnet finished the night with 19 kills, 14 digs, and 5 service aces. Hejny finished the night with 9 kills, 6 digs, and 1 block assist. Putting the finishing touches on the Golden Eagles victory were Erin Flynn with 11 kills and Katie Jeremiason who finished with 13 digs. Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates set the way for the Golden Eagles hitters by finishing with 27 and 17 set assists, respectively.

The Golden Eagles improve to 8-20 overall and 2-12 within the NSIC. Bemidji State falls to 3-30 overall and 0-14 in the NSIC.

11/3/05)- Ebnet and Flynn Earn NSIC Volleyball Honors

(Crookston, Minn.)- Golden Eagle Volleyball captains Joan Ebnet (Senior, 5'9, Outside Hitter, Pequot Lakes, MN) and Erin Flynn (Junior, 5'11, Middle Hitter, Bloomer, WI) have been named to the 2005 NSIC All-Conference Volleyball team.

Ebnet (NSIC First Team) has been name NSIC Defensive Player-of-the-Week twice during the 2005 season and was named to the Northern Extreme All-Tournament team held at the University of North Dakota. On the season, Ebnet leads the Golden Eagles in kills (324) and digs (524). She is ranked third in the NSIC in digs/game (5.64). This season, Ebnet became the first Golden Eagle in history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.

Flynn (NSIC Honorable Mention) leads the Golden Eagle Volleyball team in block solos (17) and block assists (83). She is second on the team in kills (313) and is ranked ninth in NSIC Conference play in kills/game (3.28).


(11/1/05)- Golden Eagles Can't Figure Out Sioux


(Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC volleyball team never found their rhythm tonight as they fell in three games to the visiting University of North Dakota. The closest game was the first one which finished at 30-25. In game two the Sioux jumped out to a commanding lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 30-19 victory. In game three UND came within one point of closing out the Golden Eagles at 29-20, but UMC mounted a little bit of a rally before the ball trickled down the net to secure a 20-24 victory for UND.

Erin Flynn led the Golden Eagles in kills on the night with 11, and Katie Delohery led in assists with 26. On the night the UMC attack percentage was just .103 compared to .308 for UND. The loss drops the Golden Eagles overall record to 7-20, and puts the Sioux over the .500 mark at 13-12 on the season.

The Golden Eagles close out the season back I Lysaker Gymnasium Friday night at 7:00pm for a NSIC match-up with Bemidji State. The Golden Eagles beat the Beavers in the two team's previous meeting earlier in the season in Bemidji. That game will be the final tune-up for UMC before they begin the conference tournament.

(10/31/05)- Ebnet Has Record Setting Weekend for the Golden Eagles, Named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for Second Time in 2005

(St. Paul, Minn.)- Joan Ebnet (Senior, 5'9, Outside Hitter, Pequot Lakes, MN) has been named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 24th, 2005.

Ebnet averaged 6.75 digs and 3.5 kills per game last week. She recorded 30 digs, 18 kills and one block assist against Augustana, 14 kills and 27 digs and three block assists against Wayne State and 10 kills and 24 digs against SW Minnesota State.

Ebnet had a record setting night against Wayne State as she recorded her 1,000th career kill and became the first Golden Eagle Volleyball player in UMC history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.

 


(10/29/05)- Golden Eagles Suffer Loss to #2 Mustangs 3-1

(Crookston, Minn.)-The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs. SMSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a 30-26 victory. UMC responded by winning game two by a score of 30-23. After the intermission the Golden Eagles came out flat and lost game three by a score of 30-21. The Mustangs went on to finish off UMC in the fourth game by a score of 30-27.

The Mustangs were led by Erin Contons who finished the match with 28 kills. SMSU improves to 22-5 overall and 10-3 in the conference. UMC falls to 7-19 overall and 1-12 in the NSIC.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles offensive unit was Erin Flynn who had 19 kills, 3 block assists and attack percentage of .567. Jo Hejny pitched in with 14 kills, 16 digs and 4 block assists. Joan Ebnet finished with 10 kills and 24 digs. Katie Jeremiason helped dig up the Mustangs with 16 digs. Assisting the offensive hitters were the duo of Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates, who finished with 33 and 18 set assists, respectively.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 against the University of North Dakota. The game time is set for 7:00 pm and the game will be played at Lysaker Gymnasium. Come out and support UMC athletics.

(10/28/05)- Ebnet Records 1000th Kill in Losing Effort

(Crookston, Minn.)-The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost to the Wayne State College Wildcats 3-1. UMC lost the first game 30-19, but rebounded to win the second game by a score of 30-25. The Golden Eagles fell in game three by a score of 30-23. The Wildcats closed out the match by winning game four by a score of 30-21. UMC falls to 7-18 on the year and 1-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Wayne State improves to 22-8 on the year and 8-4 in the NSIC.

UMC's Joan Ebnet recorded her 1,000th kill against the Wildcats. Ebnet is the 3rd Golden Eagle with 1,000 career kills and the first Golden Eagle ever to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for her career. She finished the night with 14 kills, 27 digs and 3 block assists.

Erin Flynn chipped in with 12 kills and 5 block assists. Jo Hejny finished with 9 kills and 18 digs. Lisa Steinbrecher had an outstanding night with 7 kills and a .333 kill percentage. Setting the way for the Golden Eagles was Katie Delohery with 27 set assists and Cassie Yates with 20 set assists.

The Golden Eagles return to action on October 29, 2005 against Southwest Minnesota State University. The game time is set for 4 pm and will take place at Lysaker Gymnasium.

(10/25/05)- Vikings Too Much For Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Volleyball team dropped a non-conference match 1-3 this evening to the Augustana College Vikings. Augustana started the night out strong with a 30-23 win the in the first game of the match. The Golden Eagles would even the match at one game a piece with a 30-27 win in the second game. In the final two games UMC put up a good effort but had trouble keeping it close as the Vikings won the final two 30-21 and 30-22.

Senior captain Joan Ebnet led the Golden Eagles all night as she finished with 18 kills and 30 digs in the match. With her 18 kills, Ebnet is now just four kills shy of becoming the third member of the UMC 1,000 kill club. She is also the only Golden Eagle to ever record 1,000 career digs, and will become the first ever member of the UMC 1,000-1,000 club.

Also on the night, UMC's Jo Hejny added 15 kills and 22 digs and Erin Flynn contributed 12 kills. Katie Delohery led the team in assists with 29 and Cassie Yates finished with 22. The loss leaves UMC's record at 7-17 with four home games remaining. The team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium this weekend for a conference match-up with Wayne State on Friday and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. Game times are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.

(10/22/05)- Golden Eagles Go Down In Four To Warriors

The Golden Eagles played four close games but could only get a win in one of them as they lost 3-1 to the Winona State Warriors. In the first game UMC would make Winona earn the victory as they lost 31-29. In game two the Golden Eagles would get the win as they beat Winona 30-26. Games three and four would also be close as UMC lost by just three and six points respectively. The two Golden Eagle seniors would lead the way as Jo Hejny and Joan Ebnet each finished with 16 kills. Erin Flynn and Theresa Crance would also contribute 11 and 10 kills respectively. Ebnet also added 18 defensive digs on the match. Katie Jeremiason finished the day with 16 defensive digs, while Lisa Steinbrecher added 10. Katie Delohery contributed 33 set assists and Cassie Yates added 22.

With the loss UMC falls to 7-16 on the season and 1-10 in NSIC play, while the Warriors improve to 15-13 and 4-7 in the conference. The Golden Eagles return home on Tuesday, October 25th for a non-conference match with Augustana College.

(10/21/05)- UMC loses to #5 Concordia-St. Paul

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost 3-0 to the fifth ranked Concordia-St. Paul University Golden Bears. UMC falls to 7-15 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. Concordia-St. Paul improves to 20-4 and 10-0 in the NSIC.

UMC was lead by Erin Flynn who had 8 kills and Jo Hejny pitched in with 7 kills. Joan Ebnet led the Golden Eagles with 12 defensive digs. Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates set the way with 13 and 10 set assists, respectively.

(10/15/05)- Northern State Outlasts UMC

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost a nail biter to the Northern State University Wolves, 3-2. The Golden Eagles came out flat in the first game and lost 30-16. They rebounded in the second game by winning 30-25. Northern State came back to win the third game 30-27. UMC forced a fifth game by winning the fourth game 30-17. The Wolves edged the Golden Eagles in the deciding game 15-13. UMC falls to 7-14 on the year, 1-8 in conference play. Northern State improves to 12-9, and 5-4 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles were led by their "Big Three" of Joan Ebnet, Jo Hejny, and Erin Flynn. Ebnet led the way with 19 kills and 23 defensive digs and 4 block assists. Hejny had 18 kills and 10 defensive digs. Flynn finished with 18 kills and nine block assists. Katie Jeremiason had a big night on the defensive end with 38 defensive digs. 'Setting' the way for the UMC hitters was Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates. They finished with 37 and 21 set assists respectively.

The Golden Eagles return to action on October 21, 2005 against Concordia-St. Paul University. The game is in St. Paul and the game time is set for 7:00 pm.

(10/14/05)- Dragons Burn Golden Eagles 3-0

The UMC Women's Volleyball team couldn't overcome offensive errors as they committed 20 attack errors and 7 service errors and fell to MSU-Moorhead in three games.

UMC finished with a .132 attack% to the Dragon's .325 attack%. Sigourney Schaffer (.346 attack%) and Jesseca White (.357 attack%) led the Dragon's and all attackers with 12 kills for the match. UMC's Joan Ebnet and MSU's Tina Lensing both finished with 10 kills a piece.

UMC is now 7-13 overall and 1-7 in the NSIC. Moorhead raises its record to 18-3 and 5-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagle's travel to Northern State on Saturday for a conference match-up against the "Wolves". Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The team is on the road again next weekend and then return home to finish the conference season with five home matches.

(10/11/05)- Bulldog Heavy Hitters Sweep Golden Eagles 3-0

(Virginia, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Volleyball team hosted a match with the University of Minnesota, Duluth tonight at Virginia High School (Virginia, MN). The occasion was to honor two former "Blue Devil" volleyball players Jo Hejny (UMC) and Julie Lenci (UMD) who are finishing up their collegiate careers.

The Bulldogs swept the Golden Eagles behind a team match attack percentage of .362. UMD's Vicky Braegelmann led all attackers with 15 kills. Jo Hejny led UMC with 12 kills for the match. Lenci finished with 3 kills.

UMC is now 7-12 on the season and 1-6 in NSIC Conference play. The team now travels to MSU-Moorhead this Friday for a 7 p.m. game and then to Northern State in Aberdeen, SD for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday.

(10/4/05)- Golden Eagles Secure First Conference Win of Season

The UMC Women's Volleyball team secured its first NSIC Conference victory tonight as they defeated the Bemidji State Beaver's 3-0. The two teams battled for all three games as the total point difference was 13 points for the match (30-27, 30-24, 30-26).

Junior, Erin Flynn led all attackers as she finished with 14 kills and a .370 attack%. Flynn also added one dig and three block assists on the defensive side of the ball. Joan Ebnet and Jo Hejny both finished with 11 kills. Ebnet also recorded two aces and 14 defensive digs. Assisting on the night was the duo of Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates who finished with 23 and 16 assists respectively.

The Golden Eagle's are now 1-6 in NSIC Conference play. The team travels to Virginia, MN next Tuesday, October 11th to take on Duluth in a non-conference, "exhibition" game at Virginia High School. On the 14th and 15th of October the team returns to conference action taking on MSU-Moorhead and Northern State. Both games are on the road and are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

(10/1/05)- Wildcats Down Golden Eagles in Three

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team got knocked off by the Wayne State College Wildcats, 3-0. The road weary Golden Eagles fell 30-16, 30-26, and 30-21. UMC falls to 6-11 and 0-6 in conference play. The Wildcats' Jacey Kuck Schwartz was just too much for UMC to handle as she led all players with 15 kills.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Joan Ebnet who had 11 kills and 21 defensive digs. Also contributing was Erin Flynn who had 10 kills and one block solo and three block assists. On the night, Katie Delohery led UMC with 18 set assists.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 as they travel to Bemidji to take on the Beavers. Game time is 7:00 pm.

(9/30/05)- Southwest Moves Winning Streak to Five

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team was defeated by the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs 3-0. The Golden Eagles lost the games 30-19, 30-18, and 30-26. UMC falls to 6-10 on the year and 0-5 in conference play.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Jo Hejny with 10 kills and an attack percentage of .320. Erin Flynn also contributed with 9 kills on the night. Joan Ebnet lead the team in digs with 11, and Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates both had 12 set assists.

(9/27/05)- Golden Eagles Get Back on Winning Track Against Huskies

(Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC volleyball team rediscovered its winning ways tonight with a 3-1 victory against St. Cloud State. The night began promising as the Golden Eagles got a win in the first game 30-24. The Huskies evened the score with a 30-20 win in the second game. After game two coach Simon made a switch in his Libero moving Katie Jeremiason into the position and letting Brook DeLanghe have her usually role. The switch did the trick as UMC won the next two games to take the match. Game three was a tight contest as the teams battled to a 30-28 final with UMC coming out on top. In game four the Golden Eagles found themselves down but the Huskies made mistake after mistake and let the Golden Eagles get back into the game, and eventually win it 30-27 on a Jo Hejny kill. The game winning kill was one of just two in the night for Hejny.

Leading the offense for the Golden Eagles on the night was Joan Ebnet and Erin Flynn with 16 and 15 kills respectively. Ebnet and Flynn also had an excellent night in kill percentage as both were near the .500 mark. Cassie Yates and Katie Delohery controlled the duty of setting with Delohery finishing with 26 and Yates with 20. The win is the sixth of the season for the Golden Eagles and boosts their overall record at 6-9. UMC will travel to Marshall, Minnesota on Friday to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State for a 7:00 NSIC contest.

(9/24/05)- #6 Golden Bears Continue Winning Ways

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost 3-0 to the #6 (AVCA) ranked Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. UMC lost by scores of 30-19, 30-18, and 30-18. The Golden Bears had a match attack percentage of .337 compared to the Golden Eagles' attack percentage of .073. Jessica Lucia's match high 18 kills were too much for the Golden Eagles' defense. The Golden Eagles also had trouble with the Concordia-St. Paul serves all evening as CSP finished with eight service aces.

Erin Flynn led the Golden Eagle attack with seven kills. Also chipping in were Jo Hejny with six kills, Joan Ebnet with five kills and 13 digs, Theresa Crance with four kills, and Jenny Dooley with four kills and an attack percentage of .400. Setting up the hitters was Katie Delohery with 15 set assists and Cassie Yates with nine set assists.

(9/23/05)- Golden Eagles Fall to the Warriors of Winona State

A win in the first game and four hard fought battles were not enough as UMC Volleyball fell to Winona State tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles got the night started off well with a 30-23 win in the first game. The Golden Eagles could not maintain that momentum as the score reversed and the Golden Eagles found themselves on the losing end of a 30-23 score in game two. Game three went past the 30 mark as the teams went back and forth to a 34-32 Warrior victory. A lead in game four was diminished as the Warriors rallied late to win another close game 30-28 and take the match three games to one.

The Warriors were led all night long by Molly Horihan who had 22 kills on the night including eight in the final game as Winona pulled away for the victory. The Golden Eagles were led on the night by Erin Flynn, Joan Ebnet, and Jo Henjy who had 14, 13, and 12 kills respectively. Also on the night Katie Delohery had 30 set assists while Cassie Yates had 19. The loss leaves the Golden Eagles 0-3 in NSIC play, and 5-8 on the year while Winona State gains their first conference win. UMC is at home again tomorrow night for a 5:00 homecoming match up with #6 nationally ranked Concordia - St. Paul.

(9/19/05)- Ebnet Named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week

(St. Paul, Minn.)- JoanEbnet, a senior on the Golden Eagle Volleyball team,from Pequot Lakes, totaled 64 digs for an average of 8.0 per game, in eight games over the weekend. She recorded 40 digs, three shy of her own school record, against Northern State and added 24 against MSU Moorhead. Ebnet also recorded 24 kills, three service aces, one block solo and five block assists.

 

(9/17/05)- Undefeated Dragons Take Down Golden Eagles 3-0

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost 3-0 to the MSU- Moorhead Dragons. The Golden Eagles just fell short in game one by a score 28-30. UMC suffered the same fate as the team lost 22-30. The Dragons closed out game three, 30-26, to seal the match. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-7 overall, and 0-2 in the NSIC. The Dragons improve to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Joan Ebnet with seven kills and 24 digs. Jo Hejny chipped in with six kills and 15 digs and Theresa Crance finished with six kills and five block assists. Also contributing was Erin Flynn with eight kills. Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates helped fuel the UMC attack with 15 and 10 set assists respectively.

The Golden Eagles kick off Homecoming Weekend as they return to action on Friday, September 23 versus Winona State at 7:00 pm in Lysaker Gymnasium.

Next week is homecoming at UMC. Come out and take part in the festivities and cheer your Golden Eagles to victory. Volleyball plays next Friday at 7 p.m. and then on Saturday, soccer plays Wayne State at 1 p.m., football plays Wayne State at 1:30 p.m. and Volleyball plays Concordia- St. Paul at 5 p.m.

(9/16/05)- Northern State Outlasts Golden Eagles in Opener

(Crookston, Minn.)-The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team lost a nail-biter to Northern State 3-2. The Golden Eagles started out strong as they took game one 30-27. They suffered a setback in game two as UMC lost 22-30. They rebounded in game three with a score of 30-24. In games four and five, UMC ran out of gas as they lost 20-30 and 12-15, respectively.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was the trio of Joan Ebnet, Erin Flynn, and Jo Hejny. Ebnet led the way with a double-double of 17 kills and 40 digs, nearly surpassing her record of 42 digs. Hejny had a double-double as well as she finished with 15 kills and 16 defensive digs. Flynn finished with 16 kills and four block assists and two block solos. Playing tough in the middle tonight for the Eagles was the combination of Allison Zajicek and Theresa Crance. Zajicek finished with seven kills and six block assists and Crance finished with eight kills and six block assists. "Setting" up all of the hitters was the combination of Katie Delohery who finished with 31 assists and Cassie Yates with 27 assists.

The Golden Eagles volleyball team returns to action tomorrow evening at 5:00 pm in Lysaker Gymnasium, as they are set to host undefeated MSU- Moorhead (12-0).

(9/10/05)- Mavericks Hand Golden Eagles Only Loss in North Central Region Challenge

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team came up short against the University of Nebraska-Omaha today as they lost 3-0. The Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaker in the first game, as they lost 34-32. The Mavericks then went on to defeat UMC 30-25 in game two, and 30-24 in game three.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was the big three of Erin Flynn, Joan Ebnet, and Jo Hejny. Erin Flynn led the way in kills with 11. Jo Hejny had nine kills and 11 digs, and Joan Ebnet had nine kills and 10 digs. Katie Delohery had 18 set assists and Cassie Yates finished with 15 set assists.

The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball is now 5-5 on the year. The Golden Eagles open the conference season at home this weekend, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium against the Northern State University Wolves.

(9/9/05)- UMC Continues Its Winning Ways

The UMC Women's Volleyball team continues to stay hot as the team took down Minnesota State-Mankato tonight in a thrilling five game match 3-2 (30-27, 23-30, 32-30, 25-30, 15-11). The team will look to sweep its competition tomorrow in the final game of the North Central Region Challenge in Aberdeen, SD. UMC will take on Nebraska-Omaha at noon.

Jo Hejny continued to be the hot striker for the Golden Eagles as she finished with 14 kills and a .333 attack%. Joan Ebnet also finished with 14 kills while Erin Flynn finished with nine. Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates again combined for 44 of 45 assists finishing with 25 and 19. Tough serves also helped the Golden Eagles as the team finished with 13 total. Defensively, Katie Jeremiason led the team with 26 digs while Joan Ebnet finished with 24.

UMC is 5-4 in non-conference play and now takes on Nebraska-Omaha at noon tomorrow in the final game of the North Central Region Challenge.

(9/9/05)- Golden Eagles Dominate Coyotes

The Golden Eagle Women's Volleyball team responded to a five game loss on August 27th to USD with a dominating win against the Coyotes in three straight games today(30-23, 30-20, 30-17).

Jo Hejny led the Golden Eagles with 18 kills while Erin Flynn (.500 attack%) and Joan Ebnet followed with eight and seven kills respectively for the match. The Golden Eagles finished with a .209 attack% while USD couldn't get things rolling as they finished with a .000 attack%. Katie Delohery (20 assists) and Cassie Yates (18 assists) split time at the setter position assisting on 38 of 39 kills. Service aces also went in the Golden Eagles favor as UMC finished with 10 to South Dakota's one. Defensively, Jo Hejny again led the Golden Eagles with 16 digs followed by Katie Jeremiason with 10. Erin Flynn finished with two solo blocks and three block assists for UMC.

The Golden Eagle's are now 4-4 in non-conference play. The team takes to the court again tonight to face Minnesota State-Mankato at 7:00 p.m. in Aberdeen, SD for the North Central Region Challenge. The team then plays tomorrow against Nebraska-Omaha at noon in its final game in Aberdeen. UMC returns home on September 16th to face Northern State in the first match of conference play. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.

(9/4/05)- Ebnet Has Record Setting Weekend for the Golden Eagles

Joan Ebnet (Senior, 5'9, Outside Hitter, Pequot Lakes, MN) has been named to the SMSU/Burger King Classic All-Tournament Team.

In 12 games over the weekend tournament, Ebnet accumulated 43 kills, 14 aces, 56 defensive digs and finished with a .318 attack%.

At the tournament, Ebnet also broke UMC's career dig record which was set by Kendra Corneliusen (980) from 1995-1997. Ebnet now has 128 digs on the season and 1,006 for her career and currently leads the Golden Eagles in kills (97, 4.04 kills/game), digs (128, 5.33 digs/game) and service aces with 18.

The SMSU/Burger King Classic is held in Marshall, MN.

The Golden Eagles made quick work of Chadron State in the team's first game at the SMSU/Burger King Classic in Marshall, MN. A .310 team attack percentage for the match disposed of Chadron who as a team had a .133 attack percentage for the match. Erin Flynn led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Cassie Yates assisted on 20 kills while Joan Ebnet helped with team with eight service aces (one shy of a UMC record) and 16 defensive digs.

UMC is now 3-2 on the season. The team takes on St. Cloud State on Saturday at 9 a.m.

(8/27/05)- Ebnet Named to All-Tournament Team

(Crookston, Minn.)- Joan Ebnet (Senior, 5'9, Outside Hitter, Pequot Lakes, MN) has been named to the Northern Extreme Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team.

During the weekend tournament, Ebnet accumulated 41 kills (4.6 k/game) and 50 defensive digs (5.6 digs/game). On the season, Ebnet leads the Golden Eagles in kills, service aces and defensive digs.

This is the second year in a row Ebnet has been named to the Northern Extreme All-Tournament Team.

The Northern Extreme Tournament is held at the Betty Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, ND.

 

(8/27/05)- Coyotes Sneak Past Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles couldn't close the door after beating USD 2-0 and entering the pivital third game. The Coyotes came out with their backs against the wall and pulled out a 31-29 victory, which seemed to take the wind out of the Eagles sails. USD then went on to win the next two games (30-22, 15-12) to take the victory.

Joan Ebnet (All-Tournament Team Member) , Jo Hejny and Theresa Crance led the offensive attack as each finished with 18, 12 and 10 kills respectively. Ebnet also finished with 29 digs followed closely by Katie Jeremiason who finished with 20 digs. Erin Flynn had an outstanding night at the net as she finished with seven block assists.

UMC is 1-2 in non-conference play in 2005. The team travels to Mayville State on August 30th to take on the Comets at 7:00 p.m.

(8/26/05)- Golden Eagles Can't Make It Two in a Row

The Golden Eagle Volleyball started out strong as they looked to continue two streaks. The first, a 2005 winning streak, the second, a winning streak over the University of North Dakota. UMC opened the first game with a win 30-26. The team used a solid attack percentage of .366 (18K-3E-41TA) to UND's .195 (13K-5E-41TA) to clain the first game victory. However, the final three games did not go in the Golden Eagles favor as UND defeated UMC 30-25, 30-17 and 30-23 behind two games in which UND had a .400 or better attack percentage.

For UMC, Joan Ebnet was again the big striker. She had 23 kills (.333 attack%) and 21 digs. Jo Hejny followed Ebnet with 13 kills (.375 attack%). Katie Delohery and Cassie Yates split time assisting Ebnet and Hejny as "Delo" finished with 29 assists and Yates 21. Aileen Cahill ran most of the offense for UND as she finished with 20 kills (.302 attack%). Allison Louwagie had 47 assists and four service aces for the Sioux.

UMC is now 1-1 on the season as they face South Dakota in Grand Forks at 4 p.m. on Saturday as part of the Northern Extreme Volleyball Tournament at the Betty Englestad Arena.

(8/26/05)- Former Gopher to Assist Golden Eagle Volleyball


(Crookston, Minn.)- Kelli Katherman, a libero/defensive specialist for the Golden Gopher volleyball team from 2000-2002 has been hired as a part-time assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

"I couldn't be more fortunate and pleased to add Kelli to our staff for 2005. She brings to the program a good set of coaching skills developed from her playing background with the Gophers and her prior coaching experience," says head coach Dave Simon. "She will help out in all areas but will mainly work with our primary passers and defense. Her personality has melded well with mine and with the team which helped us to have a very smooth preseason," Simon adds.

Prior to UMC, Katherman was the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID. She was also the Head Volleyball Coach at Columbia Heights High School in 2003 while she finished her degree. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Child Psychology.

Katherman is a native of Danube, MN and currently resides in Minneapolis, MN with her husband Jeff.

 

(8/25/05)- UMC Volleyball Earns 1st Win in Opener

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team defeated Upper Iowa University in their season opener this evening by a score of 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-28). UMC used the power of their Big Three; Joan Ebnet, Erin Flynn, and Jo Hejny to defeat the Peacocks at Lysaker Gymnasium. Ebnet led the way with 13 kills and 22 digs, followed by Flynn's 12 kills and Hejny's 10 kills. "Setting" the way for UMC was Katie Delohery as she lead the Golden Eagles with 29 set assists. UMC volleyball returns to action tomorrow night at the University of North Dakota.

Golden Eagle Volleyball Ready to Take to the Court

In 2004, the Golden Eagles improved to fifth in the NSIC by posting a conference record of 6-8 (14-19 overall), including the team's first ever victory over the University of North Dakota.

The graduation of setter Jamie Wolff (4,925 career assists) and middle hitter Allison Kluck (1,276 career kills) has opened the door for younger players to step up and contribute. The team will be led by the offensive firepower of Joan Ebnet (Sr,. Outside Hitter, Pequot Lakes, MN). Ebnet played in all 122 games of the 2004 season. She led the Golden Eagles in kills (431) (3.53 kills/game), service aces (38) and defensive digs (618) (5.07 digs/game). Joan recorded a UMC match record in digs on October 16, 2004 against Augustana (SD) when she "dug up" 42 Viking kill attempts. She ranked second in digs in NSIC Conference games with 289. During the 2004 season Joan received numerous volleyball accolades. She was named to the St. Edward's All-Tournament Team, Powerade Classic All-Tournament Team, UND Northern Extreme All-Tournament Team and was named as the NSIC Player of the Week for the week of October 18, 2004. She was also named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Team and was recognized as an NSIC All-Conference First Team member.

Erin Flynn (So., Middle Hitter, Bloomer,WI) and Jo Hejny (Sr., Outside Hitter, Virginia, MN) will also be looked upon to make an immediate impact. Flynn played in all 122 games of the 2004 season. She led UMC in total blocks with 67 (12 solo, 55 assisted). Erin was third on the team in kills (358) and second on the team in kill percentage (.271). Hejny played consistent volleyball during her first season as a Golden Eagle, amassing very respectable statistics in several categories. She played in 121 games and finished the season third in blocks with 36 (7 solo, 29 assisted). She finished third in defensive digs (254) and fourth in kills (353, 2.92 kills/game) for UMC.

Also returning from the 2004 squad and playing key roles will be Katie Jeremiason (So., Libero, Marshall, MN); Lisa Steinbrecher (So., Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist, Seward, AK); Theresa Crance (So., Middle Hitter, Timber Lake, SD.) and Katie Delohery (Jr., Setter, Grand Forks, ND) who returns to the Golden Eagle lineup after taking the 2004 season off.

(4/20/05)- Yates Signs with Golden Eagle Volleyball

The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball coach Dave Simon announced today that Cassie Yates from Buffalo, MN has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for the Golden Eagles.

Yates, a 5-foot, 9-inch, setter, played her high school volleyball at Buffalo High School. While in high school she earned recognition as an All-Conference, All-Conference Academic, All-State Academic and Offensive MVP volleyball player. Yates also earned accolades in basketball as an All-Conference and All-Conference Academic team member.

"Cassie is a solid setter who will bring great drive and enthusiasm to the team. She is the type of player who is constantly working hard to improve herself and her team. She has had good coaching in high school under Coach Dennis Axel and also in club volleyball with her Minnesota Select team," says UMC head volleyball coach Dave Simon. "That experience will help her transition to the college level. Cassie will figure into the setting plans right away as it is no secret that we have an immediate need at the setter position. Cassie is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball. She is the daughter of Elgin and Susan Yates. Cassie will be an Early Childhood Education major with a coaching minor."

 

(4/20/05)- Zajicek Signs with Golden Eagle Volleyball

The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball coach Dave Simon announced today that Allison Zajicek from Beatrice, NE has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for the Golden Eagles.

Zajicek, a 6-foot, middle/right side hitter, played her high school volleyball at Beatrice High School. While in high school she also lettered in basketball and track and received numerous accolades in all three sports. Zajicek was All-State Honorable Mention, RCC All-Conference Honorable Mention and an All-Sunland Area Second Team member in volleyball. She was an All-Sunland Honorable Mention basketball player and a District Champion in the 200 meter dash, 400 meter relay and 1600 meter relay. She was also named a Renaissance Orange Member for having a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

"We are very pleased to add Allison to our strong core of returning players. Like fellow signee, Cassie Yates, Allison has been well coached in high school by Vicki Coleman and in club volleyball with the Nebraska Juniors," says UMC head volleyball coach Dave Simon. "The level of play and success she has experienced should transfer into Allison being an immediate impact player for the Golden Eagles as either a right side or middle hitter. She is a multi-sport athlete who competes in volleyball, basketball and track." Simon adds, "She comes from an athletic family as her oldest brother Matt played basketball at Nebraska-Kearney and her other brother Ben played football at Nebraska. She is the daughter of Jeff and Terri Zajicek. Allison will major in Biology/Health Sciences."

(4/15/05)- Dooley (Jamestown, ND) Signs with Golden Eagle Volleyball

The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball coach Dave Simon announced today that Jenny Dooley from Jamestown, ND has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for the Golden Eagles.

Dooley, a 5-foot 11-inch, middle/right side hitter, played her high school volleyball at Jamestown High School. Dooley finished her 2004 high school volleyball campaign leading her team in blocks and aces. She received team MVP and All-Conference Honors and was named an Optimist Athlete and an East All-Star Player.

"We are very excited to welcome Jenny to the Golden Eagles volleyball program," says head coach Dave Simon. "Jenny is a good high school athlete who we feel has a lot of upside potential to further develop her game at the collegiate level. She will have the opportunity to do that in our program as a middle / right-side hitter."
