(11/19/07)- Golden Eagle Volleyball Signs Four for 2007 Season

(Crookston, Minn.)-Golden Eagle Head Volleyball Coach Dave Simon announced today the signing of four players to UMC volleyball for the 2007 season.

Caitlin Canton is a 5'8", defensive specialist / setter from Hill-Murray High School. She was a well decorated athlete making All-Conference in 2005 and 2006, and served as the team captain in 2006. She is a distinguished scholar, serving on the National Honor Society for the 2006-2007 school year. She was honored with an Outstanding Service Award in 2006 for her outreach in the community.

"We are very pleased to welcome Caitlin Canton to the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Caitlin is an intelligent young woman both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. Her experience playing in the Suburban Classic Conference in high school and with Northern Lights in club volleyball will allow her a smooth transition to the collegiate game," comments Head Coach Dave Simon. "She is a fundamentally sound passer and a determined defender. Caitlin is a multi-faceted player who will initially compete for a defensive specialist or libero position but will also train at the setter position. She has grown up around the game, as both of her parents have coached and I love that she plays the game with great passion. Caitlin will be an excellent addition to the Golden Eagles volleyball program," adds Simon.

Canton plans to major in Pre-Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Perry and Theresa Canton

Andrea Hubbell is a 6'1", middle/right side hitter from Hinckley-Finlayson High School. She is a three-year letter winner and an All-Conference player in the Great River Conference. Hubbell plays Junior Olympic volleyball for the Heartland Adidas.

"We are very pleased to welcome Andrea to the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Andrea has a deep love for the game. She has played mostly middle hitter in high school and club but can also play right side," comments Head Coach Dave Simon. "Andrea will have a bit of adjustment coming into the collegiate game but her upside potential is huge. She will have the opportunity to learn and compete with our existing middles. Because she is very coachable and possesses a great desire to improve, I see a bright future ahead for Andrea as a Golden Eagle."

Hubbell plans to major in Communications and minor in Coaching at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Nichole and Ricky Bowen.

Amber Meyer is a 6'2", right side / middle hitter transfer athlete from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. She is a 2006 graduate from Paxton Consolidated High Schools. As a senior she led her team in kills and blocks. She was an All-Area, All-Class Player of the Year (North Platte Telegraph, Keith County News), a Class C1-D2 All-Area Defensive Player and a State Runner-Up with the Paxton Volleyball team. Following the run at a state championship, she was named 1st Team All-State and 1st Team All-Tournament.

"We are very pleased to welcome Amber Meyer to the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Amber is a big, strong physical type of player who can dominate with her net play. She puts up a big block and hits a heavy ball. She is a multi-position player who can play any of the three front row positions and will initially compete to be the starting right side hitter," comments Head Coach Dave Simon. "Amber has gone through the tough part of being a redshirt at UNK last year. While she gained valuable practice time, she is hungry to get back onto the court in competition. That hunger will fuel her to excel and she will be a great addition to the Golden Eagles volleyball program."

Meyer plans to major in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Martin and Deb Meyer.

Katie Bonine is a 5'10", outside hitter from Park High School. She was a Park High School team MVP, a two-time All-Conference performer and an All-State athlete.

"We are very pleased to welcome Katie Bonine to the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Katie is an outside hitter who jumps well and is a bomber who can bring the heat. She will really help solidify our outside hitting group," says Head Coach Dave Simon. "She is a fun spirited player but yet a fierce competitor as well. Her club experiences with Northern Lights previously and with M1 this year will benefit her transition to the collegiate game. She had some Division I interest but has decided to stay in Minnesota and UMC is the benefactor of that."

Bonine is undeclared on her major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Craig and Sue Bonine.

Coach Simon's comments on recruiting class: This is one of the most solid, ready to play, recruiting classes that we have put together at UMC. Any one of these players could make an immediate impact on our program. We have seen nice improvement through our spring practice season and I am really excited about these four young players joining forces with our existing 10 players to continue elevating UMC Volleyball in the ever tough NSIC.

(10/24/06)- Golden Eagles Defeat Beavers in Biggest Game of Season

(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Volleyball team took to the court tonight with positioning in the conference tournament on the line. Both teams were tied at 3-13 in conference play coming into the match and fighting for the seventh spot in the NSIC Conference volleyball tournament. The eighth place team would more than likely face Concordia-St. Paul in the first round of the NSIC Tournament, a team that has won 57 straight matches.

The Golden Eagles opened the match on fire, leading the entire first two games, only allowing the Beavers to tie the score once in the second game. UMC used a .300 team attack percentage to take games one and two, 30-26 and 30-21. The offensive leader through the first two games was Co-captain Theresa Crance (Jr., MH, Timberlake, SD) who finished with 10 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Sophomore Heather Foreman (So., OH, Brandon, MB) added nine kills and senior Co-captain Erin Flynn (Sr., MH, Bloomer, WI) knocked down eights kills and added 11 digs, three solo blocks and two block assists. Megan Derouard (Jr., DS, Kenora, Ontario) paced the Golden Eagles with 12 digs through two games and setter Cassie Yates (So., Buffalo, MN) led all setters with 30 assists. Serving was also a key to UMC's success tonight as the team recorded five services aces to BSU's one through two games.

The break between games two and three did not favor the Golden Eagle's as they started flat, fell behind early and were forced to battle back. Down 24-19, UMC would rally back and get within one point (24-23) forcing BSU to take the team's final timeout. The teams then traded rally points throughout the rest of the game with BSU sneaking out a win 30-28.

Game four started much the same as game three with BSU taking an early 3-0 lead. UMC quickly erased that deficit tying the game at five apiece and forcing BSU to take the team's first timeout. The timeout couldn't slow down UMC's momentum as the team scored four unanswered points to go up 9-5. The Beaver's would again rally back and take the lead. In contrast to the first three games, this game was tied three times with the lead changing hands twice. BSU eventually took control of the game and going on to the win 30-16.

The deciding game five was a classic. With both teams again trading side-outs, UMC took a 7-5 lead, forcing BSU to take a crucial timeout. The teams flipped sides at the halfway point and UMC would go up 10-6 as BSU took its final timeout of the match. It was at this point that the Golden Eagles took control of the game behind the offensive attack of Flynn and secured the victory on an assisted block by Yates and Crance for a final score of 15-9.

Leading the attack for the Golden Eagles tonight was Theresa Crance who finished the match with 19 kills (.412 attack%). She added four digs, one solo block and three assisted blocks. Flynn and Foreman both finished with 18 kills. Flynn had a .389 attack percentage while contributing one service ace, 14 digs, three solo blocks and four assisted blocks in the win. Foreman had nine digs and finished with a .271 attack percentage. Defensively Derouard and Lisa Steinbrecher (Jr., DS, Seward, AK) paced the Golden Eagles with 17 digs apiece. Yates led all setters in the match with 59 assists, three shy of her season high.

The win moves UMC to 4-13 in the NSIC and comfortably into seventh place. The loss drops BSU to 3-14 in conference play. UMC travels to South Dakota on October 27 to take on the Coyotes of the University of South Dakota in non-conference play. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Vermillion, SD. The team closes out its regular season on October 28 as they travel to MSU-Moorhead in the final conference game of the regular season. That game will have an early start beginning at 5:00 p.m.
