(6/20/06)- Golden Eagle Soccer Signs Six for 2006 Season

(Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC women's soccer team has announced the signing of six new players to their roster for this fall. Keeping the tradition of recruiting players from all over the country, including Canada, the new additions hail from Wisconsin, Minnesota, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

"We are very excited for signing six new players," commented sixth year head coach Chris Przemieniecki. "We are expecting all six players to compete for a starting position and make an immediate impact to the program."

The first priority for the Golden Eagles was to find quality goalkeepers. "This position has been a thorn in our side over the last two years. We have given up too many soft goals and our goalkeepers have not been able to keep us in games," explained Przemieniecki. UMC added freshmen Athena Mussenden from Kenosha, WI and Brittany Strueby from Powell River, British Columbia. "Both goalkeepers have a tremendous work ethic and will be challenging for a starting spot."

While the remaining four players are defenders, midfielders, and forwards, two players are coming to UMC with college experience. Vanessa Copiak and Richelle Copiak from Calgary, Alberta have transferred from Mayville State University in North Dakota. Richelle was a standout defender for Mayville while her sister Vanessa led the Comets in assists during the 2005 season with 11. "Adding players with collegiate experience to any program is always a benefit. What Vanessa and Richelle bring to the program will definitely elevate UMC Soccer. We are excited that they have decided to join the Golden Eagle Soccer program."

The remaining two freshmen are from Minnesota. Defender Jacky Creelman is from Rogers, MN and midfield/forward Amanda Peterson is from Rochester, MN. "Both players come from quality high school programs and club teams. Their athleticism will definitely contribute and they will be also contending for a starting position."

The Golden Eagles are returning 10 players from last season. "This is the largest group of returning players the program has ever had. I am very excited about the quality of my returning players and the quality of the new players," said Przemieniecki. "We are optimistic about making the 2006 season UMC's best ever."

(11/3/05)- Chappell Named NSIC All-Conference

(Crookston, Minn.)- Senior Golden Eagle Soccer captain Christie Chappell (Ottawa, Ontario) has been named to the NSIC All-Conference Soccer Second Team.

Chappell is a four year starter for the Golden Eagles. She also competed in every game in her four year career which totals over 80 games. On the season, she is first on the team in assists (3) and second in goals (8), points (11) and shots (35). She was 1 for 1 in penalty kicks during the 2005 campaign. Chappell is also UMC Soccer's career goal record holder with 28 goals.

(11/1/05)- UMC Finishes Strong in 2-0 Loss

The University of Minnesota-Crookston soccer team saw their season end with a 2-0 loss to the #1 seeded Winona State University Warriors. The Golden Eagles battled Winona State tough in the first half by only allowing three Warrior shots. Winona State's Annie Lauterer scored the game winning goal :43 seconds into the second half. The Warriors added an insurance goal later in the second half.

UMC played well by limiting the Warriors chances in the first half, but the #1 seeded Warrior's just had more depth than the Golden Eagles to pull away with the win. Elizabeth Kennedy, Becky Thorbjornsen, and Cory Sak all had shots on goal for the Golden Eagles. The University of Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles bid farewell to two seniors; Christie Chappell and Cory Sak as they played in their final collegiate game.

UMC finished their season with a 2-19 overall record and 2-12 in the NSIC. Winona State improved to 18-1-2 overall and they advance to the semi-final round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Soccer Tournament.

(10/23/05)- Golden Eagles Give Conference Leader Tough Challenge

Winona State came into today's soccer game undefeated in the conference but that would not stop the Golden Eagles from putting up a fight. Winona jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Holly Sutton in the games 11th minute. The Warriors' Kayla Walters would add another just eight minutes later to put Winona up 2-0. Five minutes later the Golden Eagles Christie Chappell would bring UMC back as she scored while falling down to make the score 2-1. After Chappell's goal Winona would switch goaltenders and the Golden Eagles would not score again. UMC would not get many scoring chances in the second half as they only managed two shots in the period.

With the loss the Golden Eagles fall to 2-17 on the season and 2-11 in the NSIC, while Winona improves to 15-1-2 over all and 11-0-2 in the NSIC. (10/16/05)- Early Goals Put Wolves Past Golden Eagles

The UMC Soccer team could not maintain their winning ways this afternoon. A day after beating Minnesota State University, Moorhead, they fall to Northern State University 2-1.

The Wolves scored two goals early with the first coming just over two minutes into the game. Less than five minutes later they would score again to take a 2-0 lead before the game's seventh minute. That score would take the two teams to halftime. The Golden Eagles would get on the board and back in the game early in the second half when Samantha Bentz put a penalty kick past the Wolves goalie. UMC would continue to fire shots but were unable to tie the score before time ran out.

With the loss the Golden Eagles drop to 2-9 in the conference and 2-15 on the season, while Northern State improves to 6-3-2 in the conference and 11-3-2 overall. The Golden Eagles return home next weekend for games with Concordia - St. Paul and Winona State, on Saturday and Sunday.

(10/1/05)- Beavers Shut Out Golden Eagles

The UMC soccer continues to struggle to put offense together as they lost another close game today 3-0 to Bemidji State. It would be hard for any team to score points when they begin the game with the school's all time leading goal scorer having to play in the net, and that is just what UMC had as Christie Chappell played the first half of the game in goal for UMC. The Beavers got on the board early with a goal within the games first ten minutes. It would not be until the games final ten minutes that BSU would score again. The Golden Eagles had their chances as they had six shots on goal in the game. The cliching goal for the Beavers came in the games 82nd minute of a corner kick by Kelly Hyvare. Bemidji would add another goal late to make the final 3-0. The loss leaves UMC with an over all record of 1-12 and a conference record of 1-6. Next up for the Golden Eagles they head to Marshall for a 1:00 match up with the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday October 8th.

(9/25/05)- Late Goals Lift Mustangs Past Golden Eagles

The UMC Soccer team lost a 4-2 heart breaker today to the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. It was a rough start as the Mustangs had a goal trickle past UMC goalie Mikael Laajala in the games first minutes to take an early lead. The lead would not hold up however as the Golden Eagles Christie Chappell found the back of the net to lead UMC into a 1-1 halftime tie.

The second half started out similar to the first with SMSU getting an early goal to take a 2-1 lead. It wouldn't take long for the Golden Eagles to answer back as they tied the game on a goal by Jessica Vlatkovich. The 2-2 tie would take the two teams into the final minutes and it appeared over time was coming before the Mustangs put themselves over the top with the game winning goal. SMSU would add another late to finish the game. The loss leaves the Golden Eagles 1-11 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC, while the Mustangs improve to 3-5-2 and 3-2-1 in conference play. The next action for UMC is October 1st when they travel to Bemidji State to take on the Beavers.

The game began defensively as both teams felt each other out, with the first shot on goal not coming until well into the first half.
