Vikings Stay Perfect at Kirkeby-Over Stadium

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- The opening of Kirkeby-Over Stadium on the Augustana College campus has shined brightly on the Augustana Vikings football team. The Vikings are 3-0 overall (2-0 at home) and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with a 49-0 victory over U of M, Crookston this afternoon.

Augustana opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game on a Joe Clark 37-yard touchdown run that capped off a three-play, 60-yard drive. At the 4:50 mark of the first quarter, wide receiver Tyler Shulte utilized the wildcat offense to score on a five yard rush to lift the Vikings to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Quarterback Luke Butler had a strong second quarter throwing for two touchdowns. Butler found Sam Holsen at the 6:57 mark for a 43-yard touchdown completion and then connected with Joe Klumper with 1:05 left in the half for a 21-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 28-0. The Golden Eagle offense put together a six-play, 57-yard drive that set up a 35-yard field goal attempt by Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, FR, Hollywood, Fla.). The attempt was blocked by Jesse Jones and closed out the scoring chances in the first half. Augustana found the Golden Eagle endzone two more times in the third quarter on a Joe Clark seven yard run and a Josh Hanson 22-yard run. The lone score of the fourth quarter came with 1:53 left in the game when quarterback Ryan Schuetz hit Alex Kjellsen for a 67-yard touchdown strike.

U of M, Crookston was led offensively by quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) who completed seven passes for 72-yards. Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) rushed 22 times for 56-yards with a long of 25-yards. Four Golden Eagle receivers caught passes this afternoon. Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 215, JR, West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Scott Stenger (WR, 6-2, 180, SO, Watkins, Minn.) caught two passes for 14-yards while Charles Van Zandt (TE, 6-3, 240, SO, Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jordan Lecher (WR, 6-3, 195, SO, Litchfield, Minn.) caught two passes for 30-yards each. Casey Byram (DB, 5-11, 175, SO, Devils Lake, N.D.) and Cody Hendrickson (DB, 5-10, 185, SO, Wright, Minn.) led the Golden Eagle defense with seven total tackles each.

Augustana was led by Luke Butler who completed 13 passes for 183-yards and two touchdowns. Joe Clark led the ground attack with 17 rushes for 150-yards and two touchdowns. Joe Klumper, Eric Ellingworth and Tyler Schulte each caught three passes in the contest. Ryan Isaacson led the Viking defense and all players with nine total tackles and one tackle for a loss in the contest.

The Golden Eagles are 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC. The Vikings advance to 3-0 and 2-0 in conference play. U of M, Crookston hosts the University of Mary on Saturday, September 19 at Ed Widseth Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
