UMC Teambackers to Host Coaches Luncheon on Friday, December 10

(Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC Teambackers will hold a Golden Eagle coaches luncheon on Friday, December 10 at the Crookston Eagles Club. Lunch will be served and coaches will give updates on their seasons to date, along with outlooks on their upcoming games. Selected student-athletes will speak about their season, upcoming games and opponents. On Saturday, December 11, the Golden Eagle Women's and Men's Basketball teams will host MSU Moorhead in NSIC action. Game times are set for 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men at Lysaker Gymnasium.
 
The luncheon begins at noon and runs approximately one hour. The cost is $7.00. Everyone is invited to attend this event.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Department recognized the recipients of the 2010 Ed Widseth and Agassiz Bowl Scholarships on Saturday, October 16 at a breakfast on campus and at half-time of the U of M, Crookston and Northern State University football game.
 
The Ed Widseth Scholarship recognizes those qualities epitomized by Ed Widseth - outstanding athletic, leadership and academic achievements.  A scholarship of $1,500 is awarded, with preference, to an incoming freshman or a college transfer football player and is renewable for up to four years.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to receive this distinguished award.
 
Ed Widseth, a Gonvick, Minn., native began his football career here in the fall of 1929 at the Northwest School of Agriculture graduating in 1932. He went on to star for the Minnesota Gophers and was a Co-Captain of the 1936 National Championship Team. Widseth was actually a candidate for the Heisman Award and was on Lindy's All-Century Team for Defensive Line. He was the first player drafted by the New York Giants in 1937, played five years in the National Football League (NFL), and was the NFL MVP in 1938. A member of the National Collegiate Hall of Fame, Widseth also was selected in 1991 as a charter member of the Gopher's Men's Sports Hall of Fame and as one of the 20 greatest Gopher athletes ever. The 2010 award winners are Ben McGraw (Wasilla, Alaska), Luke Williams (Port Moody, British Columbia), Andrew Steinfeldt (Green Bay, Wis.), Josh Perea (Pico Rivera, Calif.), and Steven Perry (Poplar, Wis.) The Crookston Chamber Agassiz Bowl Scholarship is a $600 scholarship presented to a student-athlete preferably from the local area. The Crookston Chamber Agribusiness sponsors this scholarship and is working hard to promote agriculture and strengthen the very important relationship with the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The 2010 recipient of the Crookston Chamber Agassiz Bowl Scholarship is Shane Rasley (Deer River, Minn.).

midcogiveaway10.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletics Department and Teambackers announced the lucky winners of the two big-screen televisions given away on Thursday, September 2 at the Minnesota, Crookston and Mayville State football game. Midcontinent Communications was the game sponsor and donated the two big-screen televisions for the event.  A 32" TV was given away to one randomly-drawn, lucky UMC student with a current student ID, and a 42" TV was given away to one randomly-drawn, lucky attendee with a paid admission or valid pass.

The winner of the 32" TV was UMC student Colten Vanzee from Glenwood, Minn. The winner of the 42" TV was Nate Lubarski of Crookston, Minn.

 "The UMC Teambackers would like to thank Midcontinent Communications for their generous donation of two big-screen TV's that were given away at the University of Minnesota, Crookston home football game September 2 against Mayville State," says Director of Athletic Fundraising Bill Tyrrell. This type of sponsorship is vital to the overall success of a growing NCAA II athletic program as the vehicles are used by coaches during their peak recruiting seasons and can save the athletic budget up to $5,000 annually.

"The University of Minnesota, Crookston athletic department and the UMC Teambackers would like to once again thank Crookston Pontiac-Buick-GMC for their generosity in contributing a recruiting car to the athletic department to be used by our coaching staff," says Director of Athletic Fundraising Bill Tyrrell. (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team opens the 2010 season on Thursday, September 2 when the Golden Eagles host the Comets of Mayville State University in a non-conference contest. UMC is 3-0 against Mayville State in the team's three previous match-ups. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field on the U of M, Crookston campus.
 
The Athletics Department and Teambackers are excited to announce that Midcontinent Communications will give away two big-screen televisions during the game.  A 32" TV will be given away to one randomly-drawn, lucky UMC student with a current student ID, and a 42" TV will be given away to one randomly-drawn, lucky attendee with a paid admission or valid pass.   The drawings will be held in the 3rd quarter, and you must be present to win.  There will be no additional charge to be eligible for the drawings.
 
The Golden Eagles open NSIC play on the road at Wayne State on Saturday, September 11 at 1 p.m. The team returns home on Saturday, September 18 to host the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato at 1 p.m.

1st place team.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Department held its annual Women's Golf Scramble on Tuesday, August 10 at the Minakwa Golf Course in Crookston, Minn. The tournament benefits women's athletic scholarships at the U of M, Crookston.
 
Sixteen teams and a total of 65 participants took part in the scramble that was shortened slightly by rain. The golfers heard remarks from University of Minnesota, Crookston Chancellor Dr. Charles H. Casey and Athletic Director Stephanie Helgeson prior to the shotgun start.
 
Prizes were awarded for the first, second and third place teams. Due to the rain, prizes for the longest putt, longest drive and closest to the line were raffled off.

IMG_6994.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Teambackers held their 2nd annual Highway 2 Classic Golf Tournament on Thursday, July 23. Participants played nine holes at the Fosston Golf Club and nine holes at Oak Lake Golf Course in Erskine, Minn. 45 golfers participated in the 18-hole scramble which raised money to support student-athlete scholarships at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

"The UMC Teambackers would like to thank tournament hosts Fosston Golf Club and Oak Lake Golf Course and tournament sponsor Duffer's Sports Bar and Grill of Erskine as well as all of the golfers that participated for making the 2nd annual Highway 2 Golf Classic a successful event," says University of Minnesota, Crookston Director of Athletic Fundraising Bill Tyrrell. 

"We would also like to thank club house sponsors Ness Café, LePier Oil, Fosston Dairy Queen, American Federal Bank of Fosston, Erskine Iron, the Erskine Echo, KKCQ radio station, Gold Cars Plus and Erskine Agency, Inc."

Over 70 golfers participated in the18-hole scramble that saw wind and rain early but sunny skies by the end of the tournament.
          
The flight one and overall tournament champions were Mike Nelson, Scott Sanders, John Peters, Eric Helgeson and Calvin Anderson. The flight two champions were Jon Street, Brock Strommen, Chad Erdmann, Mike Gregg and Mike Sullivan.

Over 70 golfers participated raising an excess of $2,000 for athletic scholarships at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
