Wolves Hold Off Late Golden Eagle Comeback

(Aberdeen, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team took on the Northern State University Wolves this evening in Aberdeen, S.D. Northern State took an early 7-0 lead and led by as many as 14 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles put together a comeback but could only get within seven points falling 63-56.

The Golden Eagles were led by freshman Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) who scored 14 points. She was 5 of 16 from the field and 4 of 8 from long range. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) earned 12 points while Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) finished with 11 points and a game-high six assists.

Northern State was led by Jodi Reinschmidt's 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. She was followed by Jenna Higgins who scored 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting.

The Golden Eagles fall to 8-11 overall and 6-7 in Northern Sun play while the Wolves advance to 10-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston is on the road again next weekend as they travel to Minnesota State and Southwest Minnesota State. Game times are set for 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night.

Northern State University was led by Mitch Boeck who scored 18 points (6-for-17). Collin Pryor added 14 points (4-for-7) and pulled down seven rebounds.

The Golden Eagles were led by Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) who scored a game high 21 points (6-for-15) including five three-pointers. Adam Hendricks (Jr, F, Watertown, Minn.) added 15 points (7-for-8).

Northern State University improves to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 3-16 overall and 0-13 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles return to NSIC road action on Friday, February 5 and Saturday, February 6 when they face Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University respectively. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. each night.

Marauders Stop Golden Eagle Men 85-71

heier_matt_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Mary raced out to an 18 point halftime lead and held off an injury plagued University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball team to take an 85-71 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victory tonight in Bismarck, N.D.

The Marauders led 47-29 at the half and were led by the stellar play of Anthony Moody who led all scorers with 28 points (11-for-18) including going 4-for-6 from three-point range. He also pulled down seven rebounds and added seven assists. Eric Erdmann scored 15 points (4-for-9). Jordan Wilhelm added 12 points (5-for-11) with five rebounds while Cameron Lee added 12 points (5-for-7) with four assists.

The Golden Eagles have been battling without three starters due to injuries and fought back hard in the second half outscoring the University of Mary 42-38. U of M, Crookston had five players reach double figures. Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) led the Golden Eagles with 19 points (5-for-12) including going 4-for-9 from three-point range. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe and also added five assists. Mike Larsen (Jr, F, Bluffdale, Utah) scored 14 points (5-for-11) and pulled down eight rebounds. Jason Servaty (Jr, G, St. Michael, Minn.) scored 14 points (5-for-7) including going 4-for-6 from three-point range. Darin Weeks (Jr, G/F, Green River, Wyo.) scored ten points (4-for-6) with six rebounds while Adam Hendricks (Jr, F, Watertown, Minn.) scored ten points (3-for-10) with four rebounds.

The Marauders improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the NSIC. The University of Minnesota, Crookston falls to 3-15 and 0-12 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles return to NSIC action on Saturday, January 30 when they face Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. U of M, Crookston defeated the Wolves in the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. on November 29.

Golden Eagle Western Equestrian Team Travels to NDSU This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team wraps up their regular season when they  travel to Fargo, N.D. on Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7 for a show hosted by North Dakota State University (NDSU) at the North Dakota Horse Park. Saturday's competition will begin at 1 p.m. while Sunday's events will get underway at 9 a.m. It will be the second time the Golden Eagles have competed at NDSU this season.

U of M, Crookston heads into the last two shows leading Zone Nine, Region Three in the overall High Point Team standings. "We are looking to finishing the regular season on a high note and hope to clinch the high point team title in Fargo," says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard. "We are focusing on doing what we each do best to contribute to the team. We are getting in some extra ride times which is helping everyone remain confident going into the horse show."

The Golden Eagles have a handful of riders that need a few more points to qualify for the Regional Competition. These will be the last two shows to garner those points. Riders who have qualified to advance to regionals are Kayla Klein (Jr, Hazen, N.D.), Tandra Klein (Jr, Hazen, N.D.), Megan Kramer (So, Owatonna, Minn.), Jackie Nikkel (So, Lundar, Manitoba), Amanda Peterson (Sr, Rochester, Minn.), Becky Rhodus, (Jr, Kansas City, Missouri), Anna Steen (Jr, Hanover, Minn.) and Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (So, Hawley, Minn.).

Marauders Slip Past Golden Eagle Women 81-75

(Bismarck, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team traveled to Bismarck, N.D. tonight to play the University of Mary at the McDowell Activity Center. Both teams were riding a two game NSIC winning streak but it was Mary who kept the streak alive as they defeated Minnesota, Crookston 81-75.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) who finished with a game-high 18 points. She was 5 of 14 from the field, 4 of 6 from long range and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) followed Zabel with 16 points for UMC and led all players with six assists. Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.) closed out the top Golden Eagle scorers with 12 points. She tied Zelinsky with a team-high five rebounds and led all players with five steals.
 
Mary as a team tallied 16 offensive rebounds to aid in the victory. Offensively the Marauders were led by Rachel Zillmer's 17 points. She was 4 of 9 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Kayla Rogers followed Zillmer with 15 points all on three-pointers.
 
The Golden Eagles fall to 8-10 overall and 6-6 in Northern Sun play while the Marauders advance to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston travels to Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. tomorrow to play the Wolves. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team opens the 2010 season on Friday, February 5 when they play a non-conference doubleheader against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Bemidji State University in Minneapolis, Minn. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Golden Eagle Head Coach Chris Vito enters his third season at the helm. U of M, Crookston finished the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 7-42 and NSIC record of 3-29. The Golden Eagles recorded wins over St. Cloud State University and Southwest Minnesota State University both of whom were nationally ranked at the time.

"We are anxious to see where we are at as a team," says Coach Vito. "Like last season, it is an early start, but it will give us a chance to see what areas we really need to address. We are extremely young with 15 freshmen and sophomores. So we will be expecting contributions from our lower classes sooner than later."

Top returning players for U of M, Crookston include Devin Croal (So, IF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) who led the team in hitting as a freshman last season. Croal hit .345 (60-for-174) with 27 runs batted in. He also had 18 extra base hits and 32 runs scored while starting all 47 games he played in. Also returning is Casey Woodside (So, C, Albert Lea, Minn.) who hit .277 (39-for-141) with 27 runs batted in and 22 runs scored. On the hill, the Golden Eagles will look to Steve Schroer (So, RHP, Coon Rapids, Minn.) to anchor their staff. Schroer finished the 2009 campaign with a record of 1-3 with one save and a 3.90 earned run average. He recorded 26 strikeouts before an injury ended his season.

"Even though we are primarily a younger team, I will be looking for strong leadership from our five seniors," says Coach Vito. "I am counting on them to set a positive tone for the underclassmen to follow and to make strong contributions." U of M, Crookston's seniors are Teddy Gutman (Sr, OF/DH, Burlington, Iowa), David Lovly (Sr, OF, Goodridge, Minn.), Max Saarinen (Sr, LHP/OF, Detroit Lakes, Minn.), Jordan Triestram (Sr, RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) and Nick Zawacki (Sr, RHP, Howell, Mich.).

Golden Eagles vs. Bemidji State University (2)  Friday, February 5  7 p.m.

Coach Tim Bellew and his Bemidji State University squad finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 17-36 and NSIC record of 8-22. The Beavers are led by Josh Silvernagel (SS/RHP) who hit .294 (47-for-160) over 50 games with 13 runs batted in and finished 3-1 on the hill with a 6.14 earned run average and nine strikeouts. Ryan Sander (1B/RHP) hit .330 (29 for 88) with 16 runs batted in for the Beavers over 29 games. Sander also had a 2-5 record on the mound with a 5.36 earned run average and 18 strikeouts.

Jamie Zelinsky Eclipses 1,000 Points in Her Golden Eagle Career

Thumbnail image for zelinsky_jamie09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's basketball player Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied the 1,000th point of her Golden Eagle career on December 20 against Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D. Zelinsky will be recognized between the women's and men's games on Friday, February 12 against Minnesota Duluth. Game times are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. for the women followed by the men at 8:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
 
Zelinsky is the team's leading scorer this season with 285 points, a 16.8 points/game average. To date she has accumulated 1,143 points and trails only Karna Plaine (1,642) and Kari Score (1,243) in career points scored. The only other 1,000 point scorers in Golden Eagle Women's Basketball history are Steph Mayclin (1,089) and Jess Forsline (1,040).
 
The games on Friday, February 12 will be part of "Pink Zone" Hawaiian Night, an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Game times are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for them men against Minnesota Duluth. The basketball games on Saturday, February 13 will feature the Champions Forever Spin-tacular Basketball show. Tip-off that afternoon is 4:00 p.m. for the women and 6:00 p.m. for the men against Bemidji State.

zelinsky_jamie09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) announced today that Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been named the NSIC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Zelinsky earned the recognition for her conference play in two outstanding victories for the Golden Eagles on January 22 and 23. Minnesota, Crookston defeated Upper Iowa 70-69 on Friday and Winona State 89-83 in overtime on Saturday. The Golden Eagles are now 8-9 overall and 6-5 in the Northern Sun.
 
Against Upper Iowa, Zelinsky tallied 12 points. She grabbed eight rebounds and stole three UIU passes. Zelinsky blew the roof off Lysaker Gymnasium against Winona State with red-hot second half shooting. She knocked down 24 second half points to help Minnesota, Crookston to a 17 point lead with 5:32 remaining. The Golden Eagles were led through 45 minutes of play by Zelinsky who finished with a career-high 33 points, just one point off the school record of 34 held by Jessica Forsline who did it in 2000 and 2001. Zelinsky was 11 of 18 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Defensively she led her squad with nine rebounds. On the weekend, Zelinsky averaged 22.5 points/game. She led the team with 8.5 rebounds/game, was second on the team in assists with 5 and tied a team-high with six steals.
 
Minnesota, Crookston hits the road next weekend when they travel to the University of MaryZelinsky012210.JPG and Northern State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on both nights.

Both games tip-off at 8 p.m.

The Golden Eagles have an overall record of 3-14 and NSIC record of 0-11 after dropping games to Upper Iowa University (52-71) and Winona State University (43-89) at home this past weekend. U of M, Crookston is led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who is averaging 17.7 (99-for-227) points per game.

Golden Eagles vs. University of Mary  Friday, January 29  8:00 p.m.

The Golden Eagles will face the Marauders in Bismarck, N.D. on Friday. The University of Mary holds an overall record of 9-7 and NSIC record of 5-4 after dropping games at the University of Minnesota Duluth (69-74) and Bemidji State University (59-81) this past weekend. They are led by Anthony Moody who is averaging 19.1 points (114-for-242) and 4.1 rebounds per game. Eric Erdmann is averaging 16.2 points (94-for-185) and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Golden Eagles vs. Northern State University Saturday, January 30 8:00 p.m.

This game in Aberdeen, S.D. will be a rematch of the November 29 NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest contest where the Golden Eagles defeated the Wolves 80-73 in Sioux falls, S.D. Northern State University has an overall record of 8-10 and NSIC record of 4-7 after defeating Concordia University-St. Paul (81-60) and losing to St. Cloud State University (64-66) at home this past weekend. They are led by Mitch Boeck who is averaging 27.8 points (87-for-204) and 3.1 rebounds per game. Derek Hoellein is averaging 27.6 points per game (69-for-159). Colin Pryor is averaging 21.6 points (74-for-133) and six rebounds per game.

Winona State University had four players reach double figures and were led by David Johnson who scored 15 points (4-for-7) and added five assists. Zander Culver (3-for-3) and C.J. Erickson (6-for-8) each added 14 points with Erickson pulling down five rebounds as well. Brad Meyer also scored 12 points (5-for-7).

The University of Minnesota, Crookston was led by Jason Servaty (Jr, G, St. Michael, Minn.) who scored 12 points (4-for-10). Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) scored 11 points (4-for-13) and added four rebounds.

Winona State University improves to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-14 overall and 0-11 in the NSIC.

zelinsky_jamie09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team walked away with an NSIC weekend sweep today as the Golden Eagles knocked out the Warriors in an overtime slugfest 89-83. Minnesota, Crookston also swept the season series after defeating Winona State 78-66 in another overtime game on November 28 at the NSIC Hoopfest in Sioux Falls, S.D.
 
Minnesota, Crookston could do no wrong in the first half. The UMC defense caused 10 Winona turnovers and turned them into 12 points, equal to the team's largest lead of the half. The squad got hot at the 16:37 mark when they went on a 13-0 run to eventually take a 38-28 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles were led by Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) who hit four three-pointers to lead all players with 12 points. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) followed Jaroszewski with seven points and a team-high five rebounds. Winona State was led by Natalie Gigler who had eight points.
 
The second half saw more drama than Golden Eagle fans would have liked. Zelinsky blew the roof off Lysaker Gymnasium with red hot shooting. She knocked down 24 second half points to help Minnesota, Crookston to a 17 point lead with 5:32 remaining. Winona State would not be denied down the stretch as Ana Wurtz scored 11 second half points on 3 of 5 three-point shooting. She was matched by Michelle McDonald who tallied 11 second half points of her own. At the 5:32 mark of the second half, the Warriors began their charge. They rattled off a 22-5 run and with four seconds remaining in the game, tied the score on a McDonald layup to force overtime.
 
Winona State took an early four point lead in the extra session. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) hit a jumper with 1:17 remaining and the Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to earn one of the team's biggest wins of the season. The Golden Eagles were led through 45 minutes of play by Zelinsky who finished with a career-high 33 points, just one point off the school record of 34 held by Jessica Forsline who did it in 2000 and 2001. Zelinsky was 11 of 18 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Defensively she led her squad with nine rebounds. Zabel followed Zelinsky with 16 points. She was also 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Jaroszewski finished the game with 14 points and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) closed out the top scorers with 10 points. She led all players with four steals and tied a game-high with seven assists. The Golden Eagles as a team tied a season-high with nine three-pointers made.
 
Winona State was led by Michelle McDonald's 22 points. She was 9 of 12 from the field and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Ana Wurtz followed with 18 points. She was 6 of 12 from the field and 5 of 8 from long range.
 
The Golden Eagles advance to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in Northern Sun play while the Warriors fall to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston hits the road next weekend when they travel to the University of Mary and Northern State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on both nights.

Upper Iowa University Downs Golden Eagle Men 71-52

heier_matt_09.jpg weeks_darin_09.jpg hendricks_adam_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- Upper Iowa University raced out to a 23 point halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston 71-52 tonight in Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) Men's Basketball action at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Peacocks shot 52% (13-for-25) in the first half compared to U of M, Crookston's 26.9% (7-for-26) to take a 38-15 lead into the locker room. The Golden Eagles came out firing in the second half shooting 60.9% (14-for-23) and outscoring the University of Upper Iowa by a 37-33 clip. However it was not enough as the Peacocks held on for the 19 point victory.

The University of Upper Iowa was led by Keith Steffeck who scored 13 points (5-for-8). Alex Kramer added 11 points (3-for-4) while Matt Lesan chipped in ten (4-for-9).

Golden Eagles Use Offensive Rebounds to Down the Peacocks 70-69

The lead changed hands seven times in the first half but after the first 20 minutes of play, the Golden Eagles only allowed the Peacocks to tie the score two more times before going on to the 70-69 victory.

The give and take first half saw the Golden Eagles lead the Peacocks 37-32 as the teams headed to their locker rooms. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles in the first half was Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) who tallied a half-high 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, Rosemount, Minn.) recorded six total points and six total rebounds including four offensive boards. Minnesota, Crookston dominated the paint with an impressive 12 offensive rebounds and 11 defensive rebounds while the UMC defense caused 13 Upper Iowa turnovers. Leading the Peacocks in the first half was Karina Berinobis with nine points and Kenya Howard with seven points and eight rebounds.

The Golden Eagles we led in the game by Brittani Wiese who was 8 of 13 from the field, 1 of 1 from deep, and 1 of 1 from the free-throw line for a total of 18 points. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) finished the game with 16 points with 11 of her points coming from the line and 14 coming in the second half. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added 12 points and Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) played the best 33 minutes of her career tying a career-high with 10 points, setting a career-high with 13 rebounds and securing the first double-double of her career.

Upper Iowa was led by Kenya Howard who was 7 of 14 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line for a total of 19 points. She led the team in rebounds with a game-high 17 boards. The Peacocks also got offensive productivity out of Karina Berinobis who had 15 points, and Cassandra Deiters who put up 12 point in the contest.

The Golden Eagles advance to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in Northern Sun play. The Peacocks fall to 1-16 overall and 0-11 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court tomorrow to host Winona State University. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. for the women and 6:00 p.m. for the men.

The Golden Eagles led by eight at half 35-28 but MSU Moorhead used an outstanding 22 offensive rebound performance in the game to rally back to win the second half 53-41 and take the game victory 81-76. The Golden Eagles are 6-9 overall and 4-5 in Northern Sun play. Minnesota, Crookston hosts Upper Iowa on Friday, January 22 and Winona State on Saturday, January 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Zelinsky dished out a team-high three assists and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) scored 14 points. She was followed by Kelsey VanAckeren's (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) 13 points and Gina Jaroszewski's (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) 10 points. Zelinsky leads the squad averaging 16 points/game. She is second on the team in blocks (8), assists (32) and rebounds (72). Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) follows Zelinsky with 13.8 points/game and leads the team with 77 rebounds. Wiese is averaging 11.7 points/game and leads the squad with 20 steals.
 
Upper Iowa is 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the NSIC. The Peacocks are led offensively by Kenya Howard who is averaging 17.5 points/game. She is also leading the team in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds/game. Heide McKean follows Hward with 12 points/game.
 
Winona State is 11-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Warriors are led by Ana Wurtz's 14.1 points/game. Michelle McDonald follows Wurtz with 10.8 points/game and leads the squad with 7.4 rebounds/game.

On Saturday, the Peacocks were stopped by Wayne State College by a score of 57-53. Upper Iowa University is led by Matt Lesan who is averaging 28.5 points (66-for-155) per game. Keith Steffeck is averaging 19.9 points (58-for-117) per game. Brad Burgus is averaging 17.2 points (44-for-109) per game.

Golden Eagles vs. Winona State University Saturday, January 23  6:00 p.m.

The Warriors have an overall record of 12-4 and NSIC record of 6-4 after defeating Wayne State College 67-63 and losing to Augustana College 88-84 this past weekend. They are led by David Johnson who is averaging 21.9 points (114-for-223) and 4.5 rebounds per game. Winona State University defeated the Golden Eagles 96-61 back on November 28 at the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Dragons Rally to Defeat Golden Eagle Men 84-76

(Crookston, Minn.)- Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) outscored the University of Minnesota, Crookston 45-32 in the second half to rally from a five-point halftime deficit as the Dragons defeated the Golden Eagles 84-76 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Men's Basketball action today in Moorhead, Minn.

U of M, Crookston came out firing in the first half shooting a blistering 65.5 percent (19-for-29) from the field to take a 44-39 lead into the half. Roles were reversed in the second half as MSUM shot 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the field while holding the Golden Eagles to 38.7 percent (12-for-31).

The Dragons were led by Andrew Van Havermaet who scored a game-high 30 points (11-for-15) including shooting 8-for-12 from three-point range. Dennis Williamson (8-for-13) and Jake Driscoll (4-for-15) each added 19 points. Driscoll was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.

crots_jensen09.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Department announced today that two of their student-athletes will attend the 2010 NCAA Division II Leadership Academy from February 19-21. The conference will take place at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, Ore. and is funded by the NCAA.
 
The Golden Eagles who are attending the academy are women's soccer player Jensen Crots and football player Cecil Brown. Crots is a freshman from Chesterton, Ind. She is a defender on the soccer field and is majoring in health sciences (pre-physical therapy). Crots is the daughter of Darrell and Cindy Crots. Brown is a freshman from Edison, Ga. He is a defensive back on the field and is undeclared on a major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Brown is the son of Cecil Brown, Sr. and Betty Brown.

By attending the conference, NCAA student-athletes,coaches and administrators will enhance their leadership skills and formulate a strategy to positively affect their campus, conference and communities in the future. Attendees participate in numerous educational sessions which impact the development and growth of student-athletes on campus or within their conference. Sessions offered at the conference will allow participants a greater understanding of the NCAA, the Division II governance and legislation process, and the Division II National Student-Athlete Advisory brown_cecil09.JPGCommittee (SAAC). Other issues like; sportsmanship, diversity, nutrition, mental health, game environment will allow participants to explore how to play an active role, as an agent of change, in reference to these critical topics. UMC fell to Wayne State on Saturday 73-52 and Augustana College got the best of Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday 92-60. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) led the team this weekend. Zelinsky finished the weekend averaging 16 points/game. She was 14 of 27 from the field and 3 of 6 from long range. She averaged 5.5 rebounds/game, dished three assists and grabbed two steals. Wiese averaged 10.5 points/game on 36 percent (7-19) shooting. Lauren Kessler (C, 6-1, FR, Albertville, Minn.) had her best game of the season against Wayne State. She grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, blocked a season-high four shots, and tallied eight points. On the weekend, Kessler led the team with 9.5 rebounds/game and seven total blocks while averaging 4.5 points/game. Zelinsky leads the squad on the season averaging 15.6 points/ game. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) follows Zelinsky with 14.1 points/game and leads the team with 76 rebounds. Wiese leads the team in steals with 20 and is averaging 11.5 points/game. The Golden Eagles are 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC.
 
MSU Moorhead is led by Alison Nash-Gerlach's 14.3 points/game. She is shooting .451 (4-15) from the field and .816 (80-98) from the free-throw line. Meghan Rettke is the team leader in rebounds with 149 (9.9 rebounds/game) and is averaging 13.9 points per game. The Dragons are 11-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

It was the eighth straight victory for the Vikings who were ranked 21st in the latest American Basketball Coaches Association (ABCA) Men's Division II poll.

Augustana College never trailed in the game and led by as many as 29 points with 8:20 left in the second half. The Vikings were led by David Foster who scored 13 points (5-for-9). Kenny Brown added 11 points (3-for-10) while Cameron McCaffrey added ten points (4-for-7).

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team closed out a tough conference weekend today as they played Augustana College at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings used 20 points off of UMC turnovers to roll to a 92-60 victory.

Minnesota, Crookston led by only as many as two points in the first half before Augustana took a 10 point lead into the half. The Vikings went on an 11-0 run at the 16:55 mark of the second half and rallied to a 33 point lead with 33 seconds remaining. Augustana was aided by 60 percent shooting in the second half while holding the Golden Eagles to 27 percent from the field.

The Golden Eagles were led in the game by Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) who scored a team-high 14 points. She was 4 of 11 from the field, 2 of 3from long range, and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored 13 points and led the team with two steals. The Wildcats saw four of five starters hit double figures. Brett Spiker led all scorers with 21 points (10-for-12) and also pulled down ten rebounds. Amry Shelby scored 20 points (9-for-13) with ten assists. Brian Metz added 13 points (6-for-6) with five rebounds while Brad Starken chipped in with 11 points (4-for-13) and five rebounds.

Golden Eagles Shoot 34 Percent in Loss to Wayne State

(Wayne, Neb.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team had to wait an extra day to try and continue their stellar play. The game, scheduled for yesterday was postponed until 4:00 p.m. today due to inclement weather. The 22 hour layoff did not show kindly on the Golden Eagles as they shot 34 percent from the field in a 73-52 loss to the Wayne State Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles were led by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who scored a team-high 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Lauren Kessler (C, 6-1, FR, Albertville, Minn.) had her best game of the season this afternoon. She grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, blocked a season-high four shots, and tallied eight points.

The Wildcats went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter to go up by 12 points and they did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. Wayne State was led by Ashley Arlen who scored 27 point and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Clare Duwelius followed Arlen with 18 pionts.

The Golden Eagles advance to 6-7 overall this season and 4-3 in Northern Sun play. The Wildcats are 10-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. tomorrow to play Augustana College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

(St. Paul, Minn.)- Due to poor travel conditions in the region, NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond has announced changes to Augustana College and Wayne State College men's and women's basketball games this weekend.  The two weekend series versus Minnesota, Crookston and MSU Moorhead will be pushed back one day from a Friday-Saturday series to Saturday-Sunday.

Wayne State was scheduled to host a men's and women's doubleheader against  University of Minnesota, Crookston tonight at 6:00/8:00 p.m.  Those games will be pushed back to Saturday at 4:00/6:00 p.m.   Saturday's scheduled double header against MSU Moorhead will then be pushed back a day to Sunday, January 10 at 2:00/4:00 p.m.

Augustana was scheduled to host a men's and women's doubleheader against  MSU Moorhead tonight at 6:00/8:00 p.m.  Those games will be pushed back to Saturday at 4:00/6:00 p.m. at the Elmen Center.   Saturday's scheduled double header against the University of Minnesota, Crookston will then be pushed back a day to Sunday, January 10 at 2:00/4:00 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston's Women's Softball team will hold a chili feed on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. The event will be held at the Crookston Eagles Club and will run from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost of the meal is $5 for adults and $2 for children 10 and under. "We are planning on making this an annual event. It gives the softball team members and the community a chance to get together. Our season is so hectic that we felt it was a good idea to have the players put on an event where they can recognized," says Bakken. "The event is also a way to raise money for our spring training trip to the Cocoa Expo in Titusville, Fla. in March. The trip is crucial to our season as we can get several games in with very little threat of bad weather and play quality programs that will help prepare us for the conference season," Bakken adds.
 
The Golden Eagles open the season on Sunday, February 28 when they travel to St. Cloud State for the Husky Dome Invitational. Minnesota, Crookston will play Dakota State at 5 p.m. and St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. The team will travel to the Cocoa Expo from March 12-18 for 10 games. They play in the Southwest Minnesota State Tournament on March 27 and 28 before opening the conference season at home against Augustana College and Wayne State on April 2 and 3. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and noon respectively.

zabel_bri09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) announced today that Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) has been named the NSIC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Zabel earned the recognition for her conference play in two outstanding victories for the Golden Eagles on January 2 and 3. Minnesota, Crookston defeated defending National Champions and #11 ranked Minnesota State 88-74 on January 2 and followed that performance up with a 76-72 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on January 3. The Golden Eagles are now 6-6 overall and tied for third in the Northern Sun at 4-2.
 
Zabel scored 17 points against the Mavericks and went 7-13 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and dished four assists. Against the Mustangs, Zabel put the contest away with 13 seconds left when she hit two free-throws to close out the contest 76-72. Zabel led all scorers with 23 points in the game. She was 5-11 from the field and a staggering 11-12 from the free-throw line. On the weekend Zabel averaged 20 points/game on 12-24 (.500) shooting. She was 3-8 from long range and 13-16 from the free-throw line. She was second on the team in rebounds with 13 (6.5 rebounds/game), assists (8) and tied for the team lead with two steals. On the season, Zabel leads the Golden Eagles in scoring averaging 15.8 points/game and is first on the team in rebounding with 69 (5.8 rebounds/game).

Golden Eagle Men Travel to Wayne State & Augustana This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston will hit the road for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contests this weekend. On Friday, January 8, the Golden Eagles will travel to Wayne, Neb. to face Wayne State College at 8 p.m. On Saturday, January 9, U of M, Crookston will face Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 7 p.m.

The Golden Eagles have an overall record of 3-9 and NSIC record of 0-6 after dropping a pair of NSIC contests at Lysaker Gymnasium to Minnesota State University, Mankato (83-82) and Southwest Minnesota State University (84-64) this past Saturday and Sunday. They are led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who is averaging 18.2 points per game (80-for-185).

Golden Eagles @ Wayne State College  Friday, January 8  8 p.m.

The Wildcats hold an overall record of 5-7 and NSIC record of 2-3 after dropping a double overtime decision to the University of Minnesota Duluth (78-79) and defeating Bemidji State University (78-66) on the road this past weekend. They are led by Brad Starken who is averaging 13.3 points (52-for-112) and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Golden Eagles @ Augustana College  Saturday, January 9  7 p.m.

The Vikings have an overall record of 11-1 and NSIC record of 4-1 after defeating Bemidji State University (80-73) and the University of Minnesota Duluth (73-58) on the road this past weekend. They are led by Cody Schilling who is averaging 15.6 points (61-for-123) and 5.8 rebounds per game.

On the season, Zabel leads the Golden Eagles in scoring averaging 15.8 points/game and is first on the team in rebounding with 69 (5.8 rebounds/game). Zelinsky is averaging 15.6 points/game, she ranks second in rebounds with 55 (4.6 rebounds/game) and leads the squad with eight blocks. Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) rounds out the teams top scorers with 11.7 points/game. She leads the team in steals with 19 and in field-goal percentage at 51 percent (53-104). The Golden Eagles are 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Sun.
 
Wayne State is led by the duo of Ashley Arlen and Mara Hjelle. Arlen is averaging 17.7 points/ game. She is shooting 48 percent from the field and 52 percent from beyond the arc. Hjelle averages 13.2 points/game. She is the team leader in rebounds/game with 7.3 and blocked shots with 15. The Wildcats are 9-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Wayne State dropped two NSIC games last weekend when they fell 54-51 to Minnesota Duluth on January 2 and 83-79 to Bemidji State on January 3.
 
Augustana College is led by Megan Doyle who is averaging 13.8 points/game. She is second on the team in steals with 19, blocks with 11 and rebounds/game with 5.9. Molly Hayes follows Doyle with 11.4 points/game while Kristi Board and Alex Feeney are averaging 11.1 and 10.8 points/game respectively. The Vikings are 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Sun. Minnesota Duluth handed the Vikings their first conference loss on January 3, 81-63.

Southwest Minnesota State came to town ranked third in the conference but the Golden Eagles took a 10 point lead at half after leading by as many as 12 and closed out the game with the 76-72 victory. Minnesota, Crookston defeated 11th ranked Minnesota State yesterday to secure the weekend sweep and move into a tie for third place in the Northern Sun.
 
Minnesota, Crookston and Southwest Minnesota State exchanged leads six times in the first half. The Mustangs went up by as many as five at the 16:23 mark but the Golden Eagles rallied back to take a 12 point lead at the 3:38 mark on a Lauren Kessler (C, 6-1, FR, Albertville, Minn.) jumper. The 12 points was the most Minnesota, Crookston led by in the game. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) paced all players through the first 20 minutes of play with 15 points. She was 3-8 from the field, 2-5 from long range and a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.) led all players with six rebounds and four assists in the first half. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Mustangs 23-20 and were a perfect 13-13 from the charity stripe. Southwest Minnesota State was led by Abby Kenealy and Heather Smith who scored seven points each.
 
The Mustangs didn't go quietly as they took the lead 51-50 at the 12:00 minute mark of the second half on two Kenealy free-throws. Southwest Minnesota State tied the game two more times but with 23 seconds remaining, Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) nailed two clutch free-throws to take a 74-72 lead. The contest was put away with 13 seconds left as Zabel hit two more free-throws to close out the contest 76-72. Zabel led all scorers with 23 points in the game. She was 5-11 from the field and a staggering 11-12 from the free-throw line. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) followed Zabel with 22 points of which 14 came in the second half. She was 7-15 from the field, an outstanding 4-5 from long range and 4-4 from the line. Taddy grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to lead all players and dished out a game-high tying seven assists. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) was 3-4 from long range and 4-5 overall from the field for a solid 11 points in the victory. The Golden Eagles were an outstanding 23-24 (.958) from the line, a definite tribute to the win they earned tonight. Southwest Minnesota State was led by Heather Smith's 16 points. She was followed by Abby Kenealy who scored 13, Megan Stadler who earned 11 and Laura Kramer who finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
The Golden Eagles advance to 6-6 overall this season and 4-2 in the Northern Sun. Southwest Minnesota State falls to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. Mustangs Overpower Golden Eagle Men 84-64

larsen_mike_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) had four players score in double figures and got 43 points from their reserves as they defeated the University of Minnesota, Crookston by an 84-64 margin in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Men's Basketball action tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.

The Mustangs never trailed and held a16 point lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half. However, the Golden Eagles went on a 17-to-6 run to close out the half and make the score 37-32 going into the locker room.

The Mustangs came out firing and shot 58.1% (18-for-31) in the second half and outscored U of M, Crookston by 15 points to secure the 84-64 victory.

SMSU was led by Taylor Huseby who scored 15 points (7-for-11) and pulled down five rebounds. Jordan Miller (4-for-8), Scott Roehl (5-for-10) and Trent Carlson (4-for-6) each added 11 points. Miller and Roehl also pulled down five rebounds each.

Mike Larsen (Jr, F, Bluffdale, Utah) led the Golden Eagles with 15 points (6-for-12) and four rebounds. Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) (3-for-5), Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) (3-for-14) and Adam Hendricks (Jr, F, Watertown, Minn.) (3-for-8) each scored nine points. Cruz added seven rebounds while Hendricks added five.

Southwest Minnesota State University improves to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. The University of Minnesota, Crookston falls to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 when they travel to Wayne, Neb. and Sioux Falls, S.D. to face Wayne State College and Augustana College in a pair of NSIC match-ups. Friday's game will tip-off at 8 p.m. while Saturday's will begin at 7 p.m.

The Golden Eagles were battling an 11 day layoff but conquered that obstacle when they took a three-point lead at the 11:10 mark of the first half on a Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) three-pointer and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. Minnesota, Crookston extended the lead to 16 points in the first half and 24 in the second half before taking the 88-74 NSIC victory and handing the Mavericks their first conference loss of the season and the biggest win for the Golden Eagles thus far this season. The Mavericks won the NCAA Division II National Championship and defeated Minnesota, Crookston by three points in each of their two meetings last season.

The Golden Eagles used the long ball in the first half as the team hit a season-high seven first half three-pointers. Minnesota, Crookston's bench set the tone as well, accounting for 16 first-half points to the Mavericks eight. Pacing all players through the first 20 minutes of play were Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) and Zelinsky. Wiese tallied a half-high 16 points on 6-7 shooting and was 3-3 from the free-throw line. Zelinsky scored 14 points. She was 4-7 from the field, 2-3 from long range and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Kelsey Van Ackeren (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) continues to show her senior leadership as she earned eight points and grabbed a half-high five rebounds. No Maverick scored in double-digits in the first half and the team was 3-13 from beyond the arc. Lauren Barber led Minnesota State with eight points in 12 minutes of play.

The Golden Eagles exploded again in the second half as Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) helped Minnesota, Crookston go up by a game-high 24 points as she put in a layup at the 7:47 mark of the second half. Minnesota State would cut the lead to 14 but the Golden Eagle defense was too much as they held the Mavericks to 42 percent shooting from the field. Minnesota, Crookston finished the game with six players in double-digits. Wiese tied a game-high with 18 points. She was 7-13 from the field, 3-3 from the free-throw line and dished out a game-high and tied a team season-high six assists. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) tallied 13 points in the second half to tie Zelinsky with 17 points in the game. Zabel was 7-13 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and dished four assists. Zelinsky was 5-9 from the field, 3-4 from long range and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Van Ackeren closed out the game with 14 points on 6-11 shooting. She grabbed a game-high eight rebounds including three big offensive boards. Jaroszewski and Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.) closed out the top Golden Eagle scorers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Minnesota State was led by Jennie Noreen who tallied 18 points. She was 5-12 from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line. Lauren Barber, Laura Weber and Ali Wilkinson closed out the leading scorers for MSU with 10 points each.

The Golden Eagles advance to 5-6 overall this season and 3-2 in the NSIC. Minnesota State falls to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court tomorrow to take on Southwest Minnesota State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.

Eighth Ranked Maverick Men Down Golden Eagles 83-62

The Golden Eagles hung tough with the eighth ranked Mavericks going into the locker room down only four points at the half. However, Minnesota State University, Mankato's  balanced scoring took its toll with four players in double figures as they distanced themselves on their way to the win.

The Mavericks were led by Travis Nelson and his 18 points (8-for-8) and nine rebounds. He also added two blocked shots. Jefferson Mason (7-for-12) and Jermain Davis (6-for-10) each added 16 points. Mason also pulled down six rebounds. Marcus Hill closed things out with 11 points (4-for-8) with two assists and two steals.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston was led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who led all scorers with 21 points (9-for-20). Adam Hendricks (Jr, F, Watertown, Minn.) added 12 points (6-for-10) with four rebounds.

The Mavericks improve to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC.
