(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team hosts their annual home show this Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6 at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus. Saturday's events will begin at 1 p.m. while Sunday's show will start at 9 a.m.

Participating teams include the University of Minnesota, Crookston, Bethany Lutheran College, Ellsworth Community, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, North Dakota State University, Rochester Community and Technical College, St. Cloud State University, South Dakota State University, the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard is excited to showcase her teams' talents at home. "We are excited to have the home field advantage at UMC.  We are coming off of two wins at NDSU and looking forward to continue to improve and finish this semester on a high note at our home show.  The girls have been working hard and are improving at each show.  The outstanding team work we demonstrated at NDSU was commendable and I hope to see this continue for the remainder of the season."

Golden Eagles Men's Basketball Team Opens NSIC Season This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball team will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play this weekend. The Golden Eagles will travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State University on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5 respectively. Both games will tip-off at 8 p.m.

The Golden Eagles are 3-1 on the season after going 1-1 at the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. U of M, Crookston dropped a 95-61 game to Winona State University but rebounded with a big 80-73 win over Northern State University the next day.

The Golden Eagles are led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who is averaging 20.8 points per game. Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) is averaging 18.5 points and ten rebounds per game. Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) is averaging 10.3 points per game.

Golden Eagles @ University of Minnesota Duluth       Friday, December 4    8 p.m.

The Bulldogs have an overall record of 2-4 after going 0-2 at the Southern Indiana Holiday Classic. Ryan Rasmussen is averaging 14.8 points per game.

Golden Eagles @ Bemidji State University                Saturday, December 5  8 p.m.

The Beavers have an overall record of 3-2 after going 1-1 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament. Seth Haake is averaging 12.4 points and four rebounds per game.

heier_matt_09.jpg hendricks_adam_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston took a 31-26 halftime lead and held on for an exciting 80-73 non-conference victory over Northern State University today at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. It was the first victory for the Golden Eagles over the Wolves.

U of , Crookston, who trailed by seven with six minutes to go in the first half, went on a 13-1 run to end the half and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 18 points in the second half. However, Northern State University would not go away getting 21 points from their bench players before U of M, Crookston secured the victory.

The Wolves were led by Mitch Boeck who scored a game high 28 points. Derek Hoellein added 14 points for Northern State University.

Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.), Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) and Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) all continued their stellar play. Cubie led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Cruz added 19 points, four rebounds and three steals. Heier scored 16 points with three rebounds and three assists. Adam Hendricks (Jr, F, Watertown, Minn.) also played a solid game scoring 12 points and pulling down three rebounds to give U of M, Crookston four players in double figures.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston improves to 3-1 on the season. Northern State University falls to 3-2.

The Golden Eagles open NSIC play on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5 when they travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State University respectively. Tip-off will take place at 8 p.m. both nights.

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team closed out the 2009 NSIC Holiday Hoopfest with a non-conference contest against Northern State University today. The Golden Eagles shot just 6-28 (21.4%) from the field in the first half and went into the break down 30-22. Minnesota, Crookston rallied in the final 20 minutes of play and shot 16-35 (45.7%) to win the half 36-32 but the clock played foe as Northern State snuck away with the victory 62-58.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who scored a team-high 12 points in 28 minutes of play. Defensively Minnesota, Crookston was led by Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.), Kelsey Van Ackeren (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) and Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) who finished with five rebounds each. The Golden Eagles as a team won the play in the paint (24-18) and bench points (19-7).
 
The Wolves were led by Emily Becker who tallied 17 points in the game. She was followed by Mikayla Barondeau who had 13 and Jenna Higgins who finished with 12 points. Barondeau added a double-double with 12 rebounds while Jodi Reinschmidt finished with 10 total rebounds.
 
The Golden Eagles fall to 2-2 overall on the season while the Wolves advance to 3-2 overall this season. Minnesota, Crookston will stay on the road and play Briar Cliff on Tuesday, December 1 in Sioux City, Iowa. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- Winona State University took an eight-point halftime lead and outscored the University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball squad by a 46-19 second half margin on their way to a 96-61 victory over the Golden Eagles in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Hoopsfest today in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The first half of the game saw plenty of offensive fireworks as both squads shot over fifty percent from the field with the Warriors taking a 50-42 advantage at the half. However, Winona State University took control in the second half shooting 56.7 percent from the field on their way to the non-conference victory.

The Golden Eagles were led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who scored 23 points. Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) added ten points and ten rebounds.

Winona State University was led by David Johnson who scored 26 points. Joel Armstrong added 20 points and seven rebounds.

Winona State University improves to 4-0 on the season. The University of Minnesota, Crookston falls to 2-1. The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, November 29 when they face Northern State University in the NSIC Hoopsfest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Elmen Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D.

taddy_diana09.jpg(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team opened the 2009 NSIC Holiday Hoopfest with a non-conference contest against Winona State University. The Warriors, who defeated the Golden Gophers on November 4, could not find an answer for Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.) and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) as the Golden Eagles took down the Warriors 78-66 in an overtime gem.

Minnesota, Crookston took a four point lead into the break on a Wiese three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Winona State took a two-point lead at the 19:06 mark of the second half but Taddy hit a jumper with 33 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. The Golden Eagles dominated the extra session outscoring Winona State 16-4 in the final five minutes of play. As a team, Minnesota, Crookston buried the Warriors in the paint outscoring Winona State 38-14 down low. UMC also turned 23 Winona turnovers into 25 points in the game.

wiese_brittani09.jpgTaddy led the Golden Eagles with a game and career-high 23 points. She was 7-16 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. She tied a game-high with three steals and dished out a game-high five assists. Taddy was two rebounds away from a double-double as she finished with eight. Wiese finished with a career-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting. She went 3-5 from long range and was 2-2 from the free-throw line. She tallied four assists and stole three Warrior passes. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) closed out the top scorers with 15 points in 39 minutes of play.

Winona State was led by Katie Wolff's 14 points and eight rebounds. Ana Wurtz finished with 13 points while Michelle McDonald and Marieanna Dulas finished with 11 points each.

The Golden Eagles advance to 2-1 overall while the Warriors drop to 3-2 overall. The team returns to the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls tomorrow at noon. Minnesota, Crookston takes on Northern State to close out the NSIC Holiday Hoopfest.

cubie_akeem_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball player Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Player of the Week for his performances in two Golden Eagle non-conference wins last weekend.

Cubie's 44 points led the NSIC in scoring for the first week of the season. He averaged 22 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. He was 17-of-31 from the field (.548) and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

In Saturday's 85-80 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris, Cubie scored 17 points and added six steals. In Sunday's 74-69 victory over Jamestown College, he led all scorers with 27 points while adding eight rebounds and four assists.

Akeem Cubie is majoring in business management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

The Golden Eagles are 2-0 on the season and return to action on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29 when they take part in the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. U of M, Crookston will face Winona State University and Northern State University in a pair of non-conference contests. Both games will tip-off at 2 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team hosted the Valley City State University Vikings this evening in a non-conference dual. The two teams fought to six tie scores and 15 lead changes in 40 minutes. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of five points at the 14:30 mark of the first half while the Vikings took their largest lead of five points with 17:15 remaining in the game. In the end, all of the hard work came down to a Caitlyn Wojahn three-pointer for the Vikings with eight seconds left to lift the Vikings to their third win of the season 60-58.

The first half saw the Golden Eagles dominate in the paint (16-4), in points off turnovers (11-4) and in bench points (13-4). The Vikings went 4-5 from long range and 8-9 from the charity stripe to pace the Golden Eagles and go into the half tied 32-32. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led UMC through the first 20 minutes of play with 10 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and 2-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Zelinsky also paced all players with a half-high two assists. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) commanded the boards as she led all players with five rebounds. Amanda Brown led the Vikings with 13 points on 4-6 shooting. She was followed by Wojahn who had 11 points in the half.

Minnesota, Crookston continued to dominate the paint (30-16), points off turnovers (16-6) and bench points (25-8) through the final 20 minutes of play. However the Vikings got a spark on the offensive boards and added 10 second chance points in the second half to finish with 15 second chance points and 13 total offensive rebounds to UMC' six. The lead changed eight more times down the stretch with VCSU holding off a last second shot by Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) that hit off the front of the rim as time expired.

The Golden Eagles were led tonight by Zelinsky who finished with 18 points and a game-high six assists. She went 6-14 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Zabel finished with eight rebounds to lead all players on the glass. Kelsey Van Ackeren (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) played a solid 15 minutes and finished with eight points. She was 3-5 from the field and 2-3 from long range. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) played strong defensively as she finished with a game and career high three blocked shots. As a team, the Golden Eagles blocked nine Vikings shots, one off the single game record of 10 set on November 27, 2000 against Augustana College and February 1, 2003 against MSU Moorhead.

Valley City was led by Amanda Brown who shot 6-12 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 21 points to lead all players. Caitlyn Wojahn finished with 17 points and was 4-5 from long range and finished a perfect 3-3 from the line.

The Golden Eagles now travel to the NSIC Hoopfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. on November 28-29. The team will play Winona State and Northern State in non-conference action. Game times are scheduled for noon on both days.

Skeeter.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston head women's volleyball coach Lee Anderson announced today the signing of Alexandra (Alex) Skeeter to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles in 2010.

Skeeter is a 5-9 outside hitter from Rufus King High School. She was named the Best Offensive Player and team MVP for the Generals in 2008. She was recognized as an All-Conference 1st Team member following her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Skeeter was named a Most Improved player on her Milwaukee Sting volleyball club team in 2007. She was a member of the 17-club silver division Junior Volleyball Directors Association (JVDA) champion team and was a 16-club JDVA National Champion. Skeeter is a stellar track athlete. She earned recognition as the Most Improved Rufus King track athlete and was the Best Female Jumper in the long and high jump in 2008.

"We are ecstatic that Alex has decided to become a part of the Golden Eagle Volleyball family.  She is an outstanding person and a phenomenal two-sport athlete," says Coach Anderson. "She is dynamic, electric jumper who has a very high ceiling. These attributes are key to her becoming a top level volleyball player in our program."

Skeeter plans to major in health sciences at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Rebecca Skeeter.

Golden Eagle Western Equestrian Team Has Strong Showing at NDSU

ndsu_11212209.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team had another strong showing this weekend at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, N.D.

On Saturday, Amanda Peterson (Sr, Rochester, Minn.) won the Open Reining and the Open Horsemanship Classes giving her the High Point Rider title of the day. Mary Hurley (Jr, Grand Meadow, Minn.) placed fifth in the Reining and third in the Open Horsemanship Classes to earn her the Reserve High Point Rider Award for the day. Megan Kramer (So, Owatonna, Minn.) and Anna Steen (So, Hanover, Minn.) took home first place honors in the Intermediate and Beginner Sections of their Horsemanship Classes. This gave Steen enough points to qualify her for the Regional Championship. The Golden Eagles ended the day as High Point Team with 35 points topping NDSU who had 22.

Sunday again started out with a bang with Tandra Klein (Jr, Hazen, N.D.) winning the Open Reining and the Open Horsemanship to win the High Point Rider of the Day award. Mary Hurley earned enough points to win the Reserve High Point Rider of the Day award. Kayla Klein (Jr, Hazen, N.D.) won the Advanced Horsemanship Class with Sarah Nowacki (Sr, Stephen, Minn.) taking second place in the same division. Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (So, Hawley, Minn.) rode her way to a win in the Novice Division as well. Addie O'Neil (Fr, Redwood Falls, Minn.) came back from a shaky class on Saturday to win the Intermediate Division on Sunday.  Anna Steen and Amanda Gozel (So, Shoreview, Minn.) were both second in their Intermediate Sections and Lisa Schabo (So, Appleton, Wis.) wrapped up the day taking second place in the Beginner Division. U of M, Crookston was Sunday's High Point Team over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

This weekend's shows earned the University of Minnesota, Crookston a first place berth in the overall regional standings over some tough teams such as North Dakota State University, South Dakota State University and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. "The girls had a phenomenal weekend in the show pen," says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard.  "They are riding well and making fewer mistakes in front of the judge.  They are really learning how to show and understanding what it takes to win in this region. I am so pleased with their performances and am looking forward to a strong home show on December 5th and 6th."

Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) is averaging 11.5 points and three rebounds per game.

The Warriors have an overall record of 3-0 after winning the Merchants Classic in Winona, Minn. They are led by David Johnson who is averaging 20 points per game. Jon Walburg is averaging 14 points and five rebounds per game.

The Wolves have an overall record of 3-0. They are led by Brett Newton who is averaging 25.7 points per game. Colin Pryor is averaging 21 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Mitch Boeck is averaging 21 points per game.

The Golden Eagles appeared to have the game in hand expanding their lead to 14 points at 14:01 of the second half. However, the Jimmies would not go away outscoring U of M, Crookston 40-38 in the second half before succumbing 74-69.

The Golden Eagles were led by Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored a game high 27 points and also pulled down eight rebounds. Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Pymouth, Minn.) scored 20 points while Matt Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) added 13.

Jamestown College was led by John Peabody who scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds. Hans Hoeg and Bill Baumann added 15 and 12 points respectively.

U of M, Crookston shot 56.3% through the first 20 minutes of the game building a 14 halftime cushion. The Golden Eagles scored 18 of their first half points off of turnovers. Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minnespolis, Minn.) scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half.

The Cougars fought hard in the second half outscoring U of M, Crookston 46-37 and pulling the game within three points with just 28 seconds remaining. However, the Golden Eagles showed their resiliency hanging tough for the 80-75 victory.

U of M, Crookston was led by Damarius Cruz (Fr, G, Plymouth, Minn.) who led the team with 21 points. In addition to Cubie's 17 points, Matthew Heier (Sr, G, Ray, N.D.) added ten points for the Golden Eagles.

The University of Minnesota Morris was led by Eric Dalbey who led all scorers with 32 points. Ryan Denny added 11 for the Cougars.

The University of Minnesota Morris falls to 1-2 overall while the Golden Eagles start the year at 1-0. The University of Minnesota, Crookston will return to action on Sunday, November 22 when they play host to Jamestown College in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team held its home opener tonight as they hosted the Mayville State Comets. The Golden Eagles led by seven in the first half and extended it to 15 in the second session. Mayville State got within four points with 15 seconds left in the game but a blocked three-pointer by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with three seconds remaining sealed the home-opener victory 74-70.
 
The lead changed seven times in the first half and the Comets were able to keep the game within two points by scoring 13 points off of Golden Eagle turnovers as the Golden Eagles went into the break up 34-32. Leading the way in the first twenty minutes of play was Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) who was a perfect 3-3 from the field, 2-2 from long range and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Mayville State was led by Laura Taylor who was 5-9 from the field and recorded a first-half high eight rebounds.
 
Minnesota, Crookston extended its lead to 15 points at the 9:31 mark of the second half. Mayville started off cold in the final 20 minutes not scoring through six minutes of play. They were finally able to get on the board at 13:53 when Betsy Smith hit a three-pointer. The Comets went on a 10-4 run down the stretch to pull within four points but the blocked three-pointer by Zelinsky closed out the 74-70 UMC victory. Zabel led the Golden Eagles offensively with 17 points going 5-7 from the field, 3-3 from long range, 4-4 from the free-throw line. Zabel tied a team high with four assists. Zelinsky followed Zabel with 12 points and eight rebounds. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) recorded eight points in the game and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) added 10 points of her own. Leading the way for the Comets was Laura Taylor who scored 25 points in the game. She was 9-15 from the field and 7-10 from the free-throw line. She earned a double-double with 13 rebounds. Danielle Guilbert tallied 18 points and completed the second double-double with 10 rebounds.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court on Monday, November 23 to host Valley City State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7p.m. The team then travels to the NSIC Hoopfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. on November 28-29. The team will play Winona State and Northern State in non-conference action. Game times are scheduled for noon on both days.

Golden Eagle Family Weekend will be four fun-filled days of Golden Eagle Women's and Men's Basketball including the women's home-opener on Friday against Mayville State and the men's home-opener on Saturday against Minnesota Morris. Golden Eagle fans can get four tickets and four popcorns for each game for only $25. That is 16 total game tickets and 16 popcorns for the bargain price of $25. (Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston head women's volleyball coach Lee Anderson announced today the signing of Katie Miedtke to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles in 2010.
 
Miedtke is a 5-10 middle hitter from Osseo Senior High School in the Northwest Suburban Conference. She earned recognition as an All-Conference volleyball player and was the second leading blocker in the state of Minnesota. Miedtke earned the Senior Leadership award and added to her All-Conference honors as an All-Conference Honorable Mention athlete in the high jump.
 
"We are very excited that Katie has decided to further her athletic and academic career at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is a phenomenal athlete in both volleyball and track and is an excellent student," comments Coach Anderson. "Her athletic ability is going to serve her extremely well next season. We look for Katie to come in and challenge right away as a freshman."

Golden Eagle Western Equestrian Team Travels to NDSU This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team travels to Fargo, N.D. on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22 for a show hosted by North Dakota State University (NDSU). Saturday's competition will begin at 1 p.m. while Sunday's events will get underway at 9 a.m.

Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard is excited to return to action. "This show is important for us as a team to continue to gain points towards winning the region," says Coach Overgaard. "We have to keep the momentum going."

The points are close for the overall high point team award in the region and have South Dakota State University in the lead and the University of Minnesota, Crookston closely behind by three points. Amanda Peterson (Sr, Rochester, Minn.) also is in the running for High Point Rider as she is tied for second place. Amanda Flint (Fr, Aberdeen, S.D.) and Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (So, Hawley, Minn.) are getting close to qualifying for the regional horse show.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball team will open the regular season on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22 when they host a pair of non-conference match-ups against the University of Minnesota Morris and Jamestown College respectively. Saturday's game will tip-off at  2 p.m. while Sunday's will begin at 4 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium

The Golden Eagles finished the 2008-2009 season with an overall record of 5-22 and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record of 3-17. U of M, Crookston did close out the year on a high note defeating rival Minnesota State University Moorhead by a score 77-65.

The Golden Eagles return Akeem Cubie (Jr, G, Minneapolis, Minn.) who averaged 13.3 points per game and had 32 steals on the year and Adam Hendricks (Jr, Fwd, Watertown, Minn.) who averaged 7.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Golden Eagles vs. University of Minnesota Morris Saturday, November 22  2 p.m.

The Cougars finished the 2008-2009 season with an overall record of 14-13 and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record of 9-5. Top returnees include Daniel Fragodt who averaged 12.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season and Kendall Proell who averaged 11.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The University of Minnesota Morris will have a two game regular season jump on the Golden Eagles as they host Concordia-Moorhead on Monday, November 16 and travel to Mayville State University on Thursday, November 19.

Golden Eagles vs. Jamestown College   Sunday, November 23  4 p.m.

The Jimmies have an overall record of 3-2 after defeating Viterbo University by a score of 66-61 on Friday. They also dropped an 86-61 exhibition game at Augustana College on Sunday. They play another exhibition game against Northern State University on Tuesday and host Peru State University in a regular season contest on Saturday. Jamestown College is led by Byron Jones who is averaging 17.2 points per game.

Ashley Allen (OH, 5-11, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) and Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) were honored for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons. Augustana College didn't let the festivities skew their focus as they took the first set 26-24 after being down 23-19 and went on to the three set conference victory 26-24, 25-15, 25-18.
 
The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) who finished the match with a match-high 10 kills. Meyer now has 998 total kills in her career as a Golden Eagle. At the net, she added two assisted blocks for UMC. Alyssa Krikke (MH, 6-0, JR, Grand Rapids, Mich.) added eight kills and earned a career-high .538 (8K-1E-13TA) attack percentage. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) did the setting for the Golden Eagles and finished with a match-high 27 assists and 997 for the season. Allen played strong defensively, leading the team with 16 defensive digs.
 
The Vikings were led by Ellen Andrews 10 kills. Beth Talcott knocked down nine kills and had a .412 (9K-2E-17TA) attack percentage. Doing a majority of the setting was Dani Haley who finished the match with 24 assists. Grace Sanders led all players with 17 defensive digs.
 
The Golden Eagles finish the 2009 season 6-26 overall and 3-17 in the NSIC while the Vikings improved to 14-18 overall and 9-11 in the NSIC.

The Wildcat defense played spoiler though as Wayne State tallied 45 defensive digs, only relinquished the lead three times and took the 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-7) NSIC victory.
 
The Golden Eagles were led offensively tonight by Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) who earned a team-high 11 kills. Doing the setting for U of M, Crookston was Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) who recorded a team-high 18 assists, while Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) recorded a team-high nine digs.
 
Wayne State was led offensively by Jennifer Hefner and Tali Fredrickson. Hefner recorded 14 kills in the match and a .667 (14K-2E-18TA) attack percentage. Fredrickson slammed down 14 kills and earned a .520 (14K-1E-25TA) attack percentage. Tali Fredrickson also had a team high 16 defensive digs in the match. Doing a majority of the setting was Diedra Artz who tallied 40 assists on the 44 total Wayne State kills. As a team the Wildcats attacked at a .404 (44K-8E-89TA) clip and recorded eight total blocks (1 solo, 14 assisted).
 
The Golden Eagles are 6-25 overall and 3-16 in the NSIC while the Wildcats advance to 28-6 overall and 16-3 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston closes out the 2009 season tomorrow afternoon with Senior Day against Augustana College. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston head women's basketball coach Mike Roysland announced today the signing of Carly Rothstein to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles during the 2010-11 season.

Rothstein is a 5-10, shooting guard from St. Michael-Albertville High School in the Mississippi 8 conference. She was named to the 2009 State All-Tournament Team and was a 2009 All-Conference selection. She was a Pioneer Press Athlete of the Week and a Pioneer Press All-State Honorable Mention player. Rothstein holds the St. Michael-Albertville single game three-point field goal record at six and the single season three-point field goal record at 58.

"Carly is a great three-point shooter with a very quick release. Her range will allow us to really stretch the floor," states Coach Roysland. "In addition, her athleticism and speed will be a great help on the defensive side of the ball."

Rothstein is the daughter of Cathy and Tom Rothstein. She plans to major in early childhood education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

Schneider is a 6-0, middle hitter from Oak Creek High School in the Southeast Conference. She was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection in 2008, the Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2009 and is a two-time letter winner in volleyball. She plays club volleyball for Wisconsin Juniors. Schneider is a member of the National Honor Society, earned the Board of Education Academic Excellence Award and is an academic letter winner.

"Alyssa is an excellent addition to the Golden Eagle Volleyball family.  Alyssa's elite level experience and work ethic are invaluable and will serve her well at the level we are expecting her to play," says Coach Anderson. "I am very excited that we are able to add a player with Alyssa's experience, attitude and passion for the game."

Joransen is a 6-0, post player from Hopkins High School in the Classic Lake Conference. She was named a Most Improved Player, All-Conference Honorable Mention and a team captain. In the classroom she earned the Academic Achievement Award.

"Tori is a tremendous get as she can play both the 4 and 5 position," says Coach Roysland. "She is an outstanding defender who can defend either the power forward or the center position. On the offensive side, she can run the floor and transition extremely well. I feel that she still has her best basketball ahead of her," adds Roysland.

Joransen plans to major in biology at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Layne Silverling and Barb Joransen of Minnetonka and Jeff Joransen of Leesburg, Fla.

(Crookston, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Men's Basketball program announced today the signing of Ryan Duxbury from Stillwater, Minn., to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles during the 2010-11 season.

Duxbury is a 6'8, 230 lb. post player from Stillwater Area High School of the Suburban East Conference. He was a two - year starter in both basketball and football for the Ponies earning All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in basketball. Duxbury also served as team captain. He was also ranked as high as a top 20 player in the state of Minnesota in some recruiting publications.

"We identified Ryan two years ago as an individual that would be an impact player for us," says University of Minnesota, Crookston Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Oseth. "He is an exceptional student in addition to being an exceptional athlete. Ryan will make a tremendous impact in our program."

(Crookston, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Women's Tennis program announced today the signing of Amanda Pihlaja from Duluth, Minn., to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles during the 2010-11 season.

Pihlaja is 5'6 and from Duluth Central High School of the Lake Superior Conference. She played number one doubles for the Trojans as an eighth grader and served as team captain her sophomore through her senior years. Pihlaja was named first team all-conference as a junior and senior.

(Marshall, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Volleyball team closed out their 2009 road schedule tonight when they took on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. The Mustangs attacked at a .418 clip to take the victory 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-14).

NSIC All-Conference Honorable Mention selection Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagles with seven kills and one service ace. Meyer has played in all 104 sets of the 2009 season. She leads the team with 402 kills (4.46 k/set) and points with 464. Her kill stats rank her third in the NSIC in kills and second in kills per set. She is third on the team in total blocks with 62 and fourth on the team in service aces with 27. Meyer has been named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week twice during the 2009 season.

schiller_jeff09.JPG(St. Paul, Minn.)- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) announced today that four Golden Eagle football players earned All-Conference recognition following the 2009 season. Jeff Schiller (OL, 6-6, 300, SO, Lakeside, Calif.) was named NSIC North Division All-Conference Second Team Offense. Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, FR, Edison, Ga.), Kolby Gruhot (DL, 6-3, 250, SO, Argyle, Minn.) and Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) earned NSIC North Division All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.

Schiller started nine games at center for the Golden Eagles. He was a leader on the offensive line that helped Golden Eagle runningbacks average 99.4 yards per game.

Brown started in 10 of 11 games played this season. He was fourth on the team in tackles with 50 (28 solo, 22 assisted). Brown tallied two pass break-ups, two passes defended and one fumble recovery.

Gruhot was a leader on the defensive line starting in all 11 games. He was third on the team in tackles with 51 (27 solo, 24 assisted). He had six tackles for a loss, one sack, one quarterback hurry, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one blocked kick.

McBride was a staple in the backfield, starting in all eleven games. He rushed 247 times for 960 total yards for an average of 3.9 yards/carry. He averaged 87.3 yards/game, had a long rush of 25 yards and scored seven touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles.

Meyer set a career-high with 31 kills in a five set win against St. Cloud State this weekend. She added 10 defensive digs and three block assists in the win. On the weekend, Meyer totaled 36 kills for a 4.50 k/s average. This marks the second time this season Meyer has been named NSIC Player of the Week (10/19/09). She is currently 30 kills away from 1,000 in her Golden Eagle career.

Golden Eagle Hunt Seat Equestrian Team Hosts Successful Show

critchett_laura.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Hunt Seat Equestrian team hosted its annual home show on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8. It was a successful show for the Golden Eagles and the final show the hunt seat squad until February 13-14, 2010.

Saturday's competition started off with big wins On the Flat and Over Fences from Laura Critchett (Jr, Shoreview, Minn.) and Nicole Veres (Sr, Random Lake, Wis.). Critchett and Veres finished the competition tied for High Point Rider. Paige Marek (Fr, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) took second in Intermediate Equitation Over Fences and Sara Wells (Sr, Calgary, Alb.) took a second in Novice Equitation Over Fences. April Jordan (Fr, Beaver Dam, Wis.) then took a second in Novice Flat. Angela Peterson (Fr, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) took second in her Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter section. Jessica Charles (Fr, Belgrade Lakes, Maine) won her Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter section and pointed up to Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter. Katelyn Mueller (So, Belle Plaine, Minn.) also won her Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter class. Melanie Rodriguez (Fr, Chanhassen, Minn.) won her Walk Trot section securing U of M, Crookston a High Point Team win. Sara Wells and Nicole Veres both qualified for the Regional Championships Saturday in their respective jumping divisions.

Sunday's competition started off strong with a second place finish for Jessica Biddle (Sr, Elburn, Ill.) in Open Equitation Over Fences and a win by Sara Wells in Intermediate Equitation Over Fences. Lauren Snively (So, Herndon, Vir.) went on to win her Novice Equitation Over Fences section which qualified her for the Regional Championships. Paige Marek won her Novice Flat section. Kaitlyn Weiger (So, Duluth, Minn.) took second place in her Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter class and Melanie Rodriguez won her Walk Trot class. She also qualified for the Regional Championships in Walk Trot. The day ended with the team finishing second overall behind South Dakota State University and taking the Reserve High Point Team title.

"I was very impressed with how well the team worked together to help each other through the good times and the not so good times," says Golden Eagle Head Coach Brooke Leininger. "They showed that they are true contenders against some very competitive teams and kept fighting until the very end. We will be working to keep the momentum going in to the spring."

(Ames, Iowa)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team closed out their 2009-10 exhibition games with another Division I opponent. The Golden Eagles traveled to Ames, Iowa to take on Big 12 member Iowa State. The Cyclones shot 53% from the field to take the 98-37 victory in front of 9,685 fans.

Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston with nine points. She was 3-7 from the field and 2-4 from long range. She grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team defensively. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) added six points each for the Golden Eagles.

Iowa State was led by Chelsea Poppens who scored a game-high 22 points. She was 10-18 from the field. Anna Prins followed Poppens with 20 points. Prins was a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. Denae Stuckey led all players with 13 rebounds and Alison Lacey led all players with eight assists.

The Golden Eagles open the non-conference season on Friday, November 20 when they host Mayville State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.

RyanPauly09.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- As we honor our country's veterans on Veteran's Day, the University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball program would like to honor one of its own. Ryan Pauly (Jr, U, Osseo, Minn.) is a former Marine who is still in the inactive ready reserve after completing his four year active service commitment.

Pauly enlisted in the Marine Corps in January of 2002 after September 11. He graduated from recruit training in March of 2003 as the Company Honorman and received meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal. Pauly was attached to Delta Company, Third Amphibious Assault Battalion, First Marine Division where he served as an amphibious assault vehicle mechanic. He was promoted to Corporal in June 2004 and Sergeant in August 2005. Pauly was deployed twice to Okinawa, Japan attached to the Combat Assault Battalion, Third Marine Division. He served as platoon maintenance chief and was responsible for $24.4 million worth of vehicles.

Pauly has received numerous awards and commendations including the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons and two certificates of commendation. He is also a two-time rifle expert, has his first class Water Survival Qualification and his Gray Belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts program. He is proud the United States Marine Corps will celebrate its 234th anniversary on Tuesday.

"Having a young man of Ryan's quality and background in our program is a tremendous honor," says Golden Eagle Head Baseball Coach Chris Vito. "Everything that we hold as important in our program such as class, integrity and service, Ryan epitomizes all of these qualities with his selfless service to our country."

A 2002 graduate of Osseo High School, Pauly was named All-Northwest Suburban Conference Honorable Mention. He served as team captain his senior year. Pauly transferred to the University of Minnesota, Crookston after two years at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minn. He was named All-Central Division and served as team captain. Pauly is majoring in natural resources laws enforcement at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

Minnesota, Crookston set a season-high in total attacks (195), digs (86) and tied a season-high in block assists (18). In the process of setting the team digs mark, Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) became the all-time leader in digs at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is currently has 1,442 career digs. UMC's strong defensive play helped earn them the 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-25, 15-11) NSIC victory over St. Cloud.
 
Minnesota, Crookston was led by Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) who set a match and career-high with 31 kills. She added 10 defensive digs and three block assists. slepicka_jaclyn09.jpgShannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) tallied 52 assists. Her season-high of 57 assists came against SCSU on September 26. Slepicka earned a match-high 28 defensive digs in her record setting performance.
 
St. Cloud was led by Kayla Tschida's 21 kills and .413 (21K-2E-46TA) attack percentage. Lauren Cipperly tallied 39 assists and Chelsea Nagle led the squad with 26 defensive digs.
 
The Golden Eagles are 6-23 overall and 3-14 in the NSIC while the Huskies fall to 7-24 overall and 3-16 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston travels to Marshall, Minn. on November 10 to battle the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.. The team returns home on November 13 and 14 to close out the 2009 season. The team celebrates Parent's Night on Friday and Senior Night on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.

wooding_chris09.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team closed out the 2009 season today with a shootout against Upper Iowa University. The teams combined for just 23 first half points but exploded in the second half to record 49 total points. The Golden Eagles took a 13-3 lead into the second quarter but UIU scored 22 unanswered points to take a 25-12 lead into the fourth quarter. UMC rallied back to score 13 points and take a 26-25 lead with 5:18 left but the Peacocks scored 14 points and held the Golden Eagles to seven points down the stretch to take the 39-33 victory. The Minnesota, Crookston offense scored 20 points in the final 6:44 to keep the team within striking distance.
 
Upper Iowa put points on the board first. The team took the opening kickoff and drove 37 yards on nine plays to get a 25 yard field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, senior Chris Wooding (DB, 5-10, 170, SR, Miami, Fla.) took the kick and scampered 91 yards for a Golden Eagle touchdown to set a new UMC kickoff return record in his final game. The Golden Eagle defense held the Peacocks on their next possession and stopped UIU on fourth and one. UMC took the ball and drove 53 yards on 13 plays to score on a seven yard Keith McBride (5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) touchdown rush to put UMC up 13-3. There was no more scoring until 14 seconds left in the first half when Jessie Hubbard caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from Craig Burns to cut the UIU deficit to 13-10.
 
Upper Iowa opened the second half by scoring eight points. The Golden Eagles had a punt snap go out of their endzone for a safety and they converted on a four play, 21 yard drive that was capped off by a La'Mont Williams seven yard rush. The fourth quarter saw 41 total points put up on the board. Craig Burns opened the scoring for UIU with an eight yard touchdown rush. The Golden Eagles responded on a 17 play, 72 yard drive that took 7:02 off the clock. The drive was finished by a quarterback sneak by Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) from the UIU one yard line. The Golden Eagles kicked off and forced Joe Alanis to fumble the ball on the Upper Iowa 29 yard line. Jerome Rodney (RB, 5-7, 200, JR, Mountain Lake, Minn.) jumped on the loose ball to give the Golden Eagle offense the ball back. Minnesota, Crookston would take advantage, driving 29 yards and taking the 26-25 lead on a four yard McBride touchdown rush. Upper Iowa went on to score two more times on a 45 yard pass to Jessie Hubbard and a 47 yard rush by La'Mont Williams to take a 39-26 lead. Minnesota, Crookston took the kickoff and drove 53 yards in just 1:21 and scored on an Ennis one yard rush.UMC kicker Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, FR, Hollywood, Fla.) hit a perfect onside kick that bounced over two UIU defender but unfortunately made it out of bounds to seal the Upper Iowa victory 39-33.
 
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles offensively was McBride who finished with 74 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Ennis completed 23 of 42 passes for 174 yards. He rushed five times for eight yards and two scores. Leading the receiving core were Scott Stenger (WR, 6-2, 190, SO, Watkins, Minn.) and Neil King (WR, 5-5, 145, SO, Sebastian, Fla.) who each caught five passes. Wooding finished the game with four kick returns for 169 yards and one touchdown. Jason Burdick (LB, 6-1, 190, SO, Devils Lake, N.D.) and Shelton Derisma (DL, 6-1, 265, SR, Miami, Fla.) led the defensive group for UMC. Both players finished with nine total tackles. The defense forced two fumbles and recovered a season-high three fumbles in the game.
 
Upper Iowa was led by Mike Moser who rushed 29 times for 161 yards. Quarterback Craig Burns completed 11 of 18 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Jessie Hubbard led all receivers with seven catches for 116 yards and two scores. Vernard Wilkins led the UIU defense with 13 total tackles.
 
The Golden Eagles finish the season 1-10 overall and 0-10 in the NSIC while the Peacocks advanced to 3-8 overall and 2-8 in the NSIC.

Golden Eagles Can't Stop #1 Golden Bears

(St. Paul, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Volleyball team traveled to St. Paul, Minn. this evening to take on the #1 ranked Concordia University- St. Paul. The Golden Bears stayed perfect in their last 66 matches with the 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-12) NSIC victory.

Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagles with five kills. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) tallied eight assists while Ashley Allen (OH, 5-11, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) led the team with nine defensive digs. The Golden Bears held UMC to just 13 total kills in the match and a team attack percentage of -.081 (13K-21E-99TA).

Concordia was led by Megan Carlson who had 15 kills and a .400 (15K-3E-30TA) attack percentage. Cassie Haag had 10 kills from Maggie McNamara who finished the match with 38 total assists. Mary Slinger became the all-time leader in digs at CU as she finished the match with 22 and a career total of 2,228.

The Golden Eagles are 5-23 overall and 2-14 in the NSIC while the Golden Bears advance to 29-0 and 18-0 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston travels to St. Cloud State tomorrow to take on the Huskies. First serve is set for 5 p.m.

(Grand Forks, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team traveled to Grand Forks, N.D. to battle the University of North Dakota tonight. The Sioux were red-hot in the first half as the Golden Eagles shook off some jitters. UMC responded in the second half to win the final 20 minutes but UND to the exhibition victory 74-56.

Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston with 14 points on 5-10 shooting and led the squad with eight rebounds. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) added 11 points. She was 4-6 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc. Kelsey Van Ackeren (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) closed out the top scorers with 10 points in 18 minutes of play.

North Dakota was led by Kayla Bagaason who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-17 shooting. Kate Sharkova led all players with 12 rebounds and chipped in 12 points for the Sioux. UND outscored UMC 24-6 in the paint and 29-15 on second chance points in the contest.

The Golden Eagles travel to Ames, Iowa on Sunday, November 8 to play Iowa State in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Justine Jones (F, 5-3, SR, Richland, Wash.) earned NSIC Third Team Honors while Anna Ogaard (GK, 5-8, JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) earned Honorable Mention Honors.

Jones is majoring in hotel, restaurant and institutional management at U of M, Crookston. She is the daughter of Rick Jones and Robin Rose of Richland, Wash.

Ogaard started in 17 games and played in 18 this season. She tallied 137 saves in 1,508 minutes played and earned a solid 2.45 goals against average. Ogaard is majoring in applied studies with an associate of arts degree in dietetics. She is the daughter of Louise Ogaard of Maple Grove, Minn.

Rams Win Super Bowl III with 26-25 Shootout Over Eagles

09youthfbchamps.JPG(Crookston, Minn.)- NFL Youth Super Bowl II was held on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday, November 1. This year's Super Bowl featured the undefeated Rams against the 6-2 Eagles. The defensive game struggled as both teams scored at will with the Rams taking the championship by one point.

Members of the 2009 champion Rams include: Dylan VanDenEinde, Jordan VanDenEinde, Athan McCollum, Mason Wang, Grant Parish, Noah Danielson, Keaton Goering and Brekken Lindberg. Coaches are Antonio Williams, Joel Small and Valante McFarland.

The Rams team will be recognized at halftime of the Golden Eagle Football game against Upper Iowa University on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field.

rhodus_becky_09.jpg veres_nicki_09.jpg wells_sarah_09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Equestrian teams traveled to Brookings, S.D. this past weekend to compete at South Dakota State University. Both teams performed well.

The Golden Eagle Western Equestrian team captured Reserve High Point Team both days. Friday's show started a little slow but gained momentum as the day went on. Amanda Peterson (Sr, Rochester, Minn.) placed second in the Open Horsemanship. Becky Rhodus (So, Kansas City, Missouri) took first place in her Novice Division giving her enough points to point up into the Advanced Horsemanship and qualify for Regionals.  Additionally, Megan Kramer (So, Owatonna, Minn.) and Amanda Flint  (Fr, Aberdeen, S.D.) both posted big wins in their divisions. Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (So, Hawley, Minn.) and Anna Steen (So, Hanover, Minn.) rode well to earn second place in their classes. The team scores were close with the University of Minnesota, Crookston just a few points behind North Dakota State University.

Saturday morning again started a little weak but quickly gained momentum.  Megan Kramer and Addie O'Neil (Fr, Redwood Falls, Minn.) both placed second in the Intermediate Division with Jackie Nikkel (So, Lundar, Manitoba) taking fourth place which earned her enough points to qualify for the Regional Horse Show.  The Golden Eagles went on to win the last four classes of the day with winning performances from Kaitlyn Tollefsrud, Amanda Flint, Kayla Krueger and Anna Steen. 

"I was pretty proud of how our girls rode all weekend," says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard.  I especially like how they are stepping up to the plate and really riding and showing themselves and their horses to the best of their abilities.The team has really come along in their horsemanship skills and showing abilities.  We are looking forward to our next competition which will be held at NDSU in three weeks."

Coach Brooke Leininger and the Golden Eagle Hunt Seat squad also had a solid showing. U of M, Crookston took the High Point Team honors both Saturday and Sunday. The team is now ranked as the number one team in the region having moved ahead of rival University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Nicole Veres (Sr, Random Lake, Wis.) was High Point rider for Saturday and tied for High Point rider on Sunday. Wins on both days came in On the Flat and second place finishes came in Over Fences. This weekend Veres qualified for the Regional Championships. Team captain Sara Wells (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) tied for High Point rider at Sunday's competition with a win On the Flat and a second place finish in Over Fences, and also qualified for the Regional Championships. Coach Leininger expects both Veres and Wells to qualify for Regionals in Over Fences this weekend at the home competition. Jessica Biddle (Sr, Elburn, Ill.) won her Open Flat section. Team captain Laura Critchett (Jr, Shoreview, Minn.) put in her best rides of the year, taking second place in the Open Equitation Over Fences in Open Equitation on the Flat. Jessica Charles (Fr, Belgrad Lakes, ME), competing for U of M, Crookston for the first time, won both of her Beginner Walk Trot Canter classes. April Jordan (Fr, Beaver Dam, Wis.) took second place in Novice Flat and Angela Peterson (Fr, Detroit Lakes, MN) took second on Saturday in Advanced Walk Trot Canter. Kaitlyn Weiger (So, Duluth, Minn.), riding for U of M, Crookston for the first time, won her class on Sunday. Melanie Rodriguez (Fr, Chanhassen, Minn.) won her class both Saturday and Sunday. Paige Marek (Fr, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) also showing for U of M, Crookston for the first time, tied for High Point Rider on Sunday with a win in Over Fences and a second place finish in On the Flat.

Wolves Down Golden Eagles in Four

(Aberdeen, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Volleyball team closed out the weekend road trip with a visit to Northern State University. The Golden Eagles took the first set but the Wolves rallied to win the next three to take the match 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-17).

Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagles with an exceptional offensive night. She led all players with 21 kills and a .312 (21K-6E-48TA) attack percentage. Meyer also led the team with two total blocks and 23 points. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) tallied 43 assists on the 48 Golden Eagle team kills. Ashley Allen (OH, 5-11, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) had another solid night defensively with a team high 19 defensive digs and earned a match-high four service aces.

 Northern State was led by Kayla Ysteboe, Kelsey Aden and Jordan Schaffer who finished with 12 kills each. Megan Gilbraith led all players with 49 assists and had two service aces. Stephanie Drake led all players with 21 defensive digs.

The Golden Eagles are 5-22 overall and 2-13 in the NSIC while the Wolves advance to 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston is back on the road on November 6 and 7 as they play Concordia- St. Paul and St. Cloud State. Match times are set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

mussenden_athena09.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- Minnesota State University, Mankato opened up a 3-0 halftime lead and added five goals in the second half as the Mavericks defeated the University of Minnesota, Crookston 8-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Women's Soccer action today in Crookston, Minn.

Minnesota State University, Mankato had three players score two goals each. Brittany Henry, Kate Nielsen and Kristin Coughlin each found the back of the net twice. Henry scored the first two goals of the game while Coughlin also added two assists.

U of M, Crookston's Athena Mussenden (Sr, Fwd, Kenosha, Wis.) scored her first career goal for the Golden Eagles at 77:32 off a header.

Minnesota State University, Mankato improves to 13-3-1 and 9-3-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles close out the 2009 season with an overall record of 2-15-2 overall and 0-12-1 in the NSIC.
