Valley City's Caitlyn Wojahn Hits Three-Pointer with Eight Seconds Left to Lift Vikings Over Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team hosted the Valley City State University Vikings this evening in a non-conference dual. The two teams fought to six tie scores and 15 lead changes in 40 minutes. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of five points at the 14:30 mark of the first half while the Vikings took their largest lead of five points with 17:15 remaining in the game. In the end, all of the hard work came down to a Caitlyn Wojahn three-pointer for the Vikings with eight seconds left to lift the Vikings to their third win of the season 60-58.

The first half saw the Golden Eagles dominate in the paint (16-4), in points off turnovers (11-4) and in bench points (13-4). The Vikings went 4-5 from long range and 8-9 from the charity stripe to pace the Golden Eagles and go into the half tied 32-32. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led UMC through the first 20 minutes of play with 10 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and 2-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Zelinsky also paced all players with a half-high two assists. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) commanded the boards as she led all players with five rebounds. Amanda Brown led the Vikings with 13 points on 4-6 shooting. She was followed by Wojahn who had 11 points in the half.

Minnesota, Crookston continued to dominate the paint (30-16), points off turnovers (16-6) and bench points (25-8) through the final 20 minutes of play. However the Vikings got a spark on the offensive boards and added 10 second chance points in the second half to finish with 15 second chance points and 13 total offensive rebounds to UMC' six. The lead changed eight more times down the stretch with VCSU holding off a last second shot by Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) that hit off the front of the rim as time expired.

The Golden Eagles were led tonight by Zelinsky who finished with 18 points and a game-high six assists. She went 6-14 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Zabel finished with eight rebounds to lead all players on the glass. Kelsey Van Ackeren (G, 5-9, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) played a solid 15 minutes and finished with eight points. She was 3-5 from the field and 2-3 from long range. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) played strong defensively as she finished with a game and career high three blocked shots. As a team, the Golden Eagles blocked nine Vikings shots, one off the single game record of 10 set on November 27, 2000 against Augustana College and February 1, 2003 against MSU Moorhead.

Valley City was led by Amanda Brown who shot 6-12 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 21 points to lead all players. Caitlyn Wojahn finished with 17 points and was 4-5 from long range and finished a perfect 3-3 from the line.

The Golden Eagles now travel to the NSIC Hoopfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. on November 28-29. The team will play Winona State and Northern State in non-conference action. Game times are scheduled for noon on both days.
