(Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston Hunt Seat Equestrian rider Paige Marek (Fr, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) is leaving for the American Polocrosse Association (APA) National Tournament in Illinois on Wednesday, September 30. Polocrosse is a mixture of lacrosse and polo. It has the same general rules of polo but the racket and play work of lacrosse.

"It is a huge deal especially this year because you not only have to qualify for it, but it is now open to the entire world," says Marek.

Marek will compete against athletes from South Africa, Australia and Canada. She played on the United States Junior team for two years prior and competed all over the world. Marek is also the only athlete on the team from the north and her family is only one of three families in the area that play polocrosse. She plays the number three position which is a defending position.

The honors do not stop here for Paige Marek. This summer she will prepare with the official world cup team, which is made up of the top seven players in the world either male or female, for the 2011 World Cup which will be hosted by the United Kingdom.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Soccer team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games against Concordia University - St. Paul and St. Cloud State University. The Golden Eagles face the Golden Bears on Friday, October 2 at 3 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn. After a day off, U of M, Crookston will travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to face the Huskies at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 4.

The Golden Eagles hold an overall record of 2-7-1 and NSIC record of 0-4-0 after dropping a pair of hard fought games this past weekend. Friday saw Bemidji State University score the game's only goal in the second half to take home a 1-0 victory. U of M, Crookston held the University of Minnesota Duluth scoreless for a half on Sunday before the Bulldogs took home a 6-1 victory.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston is led by Justine Jones (Sr, Fwd, Richland, Wash.) has scored three goals for six points. Megan Gibeault (Jr, Fwd, Green Bay, Wis.) has scored one goal and added two assists for four points. Megan Flynn (Fr, Def, Chanhassen, Minn.) has scored one goal and added an assist for three points. Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) has a 2.34 goals against average and a .788 saves percentage.

Golden Eagles @ Concordia University - St. Paul  Friday, October 2  3 p.m.

The Golden Bears have an overall record of 5-4-2 and NSIC record of 2-1-1 after splitting a pair of games this past weekend. They were defeated by Minnesota State University, Mankato 2-1 before defeating Southwest Minnesota State University 5-1. The Golden Bears are led by Arielle Stimson and Katie Johnson who have each scored five goals and added three assists for 13 points. Kaitlin Budd has a 1.49 goals against average and a .721 saves percentage.

Golden Eagles @ St. Cloud State University   Sunday, October 4  1 p.m.

The Huskies have an overall record of 4-2-3 and NSIC record of 3-0-1 after defeating Southwest Minnesota State University 2-1 and Minnesota State University, Mankato 1-0 this past weekend. They are led by Alexandra Pafko and Chelsey Permenter who each have scored three goals and added two assists for eight points. Elizabeth Kelly has a 0.80 goal against average and a .892 saves percentage.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball program will be hosting a fundraiser dinner at the Crookston Eagles Club on Thursday, November 12. Cost of the dinner is $30 for either prime rib or walleye. All proceeds will benefit the Golden Eagle Baseball program.

A social will be held at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Shortly thereafter, a program will be held with Darin Everson who is the manager of the Greensboro (N.C.) Grasshoppers. The Grasshoppers are a "Class A" minor league baseball team associated with the Florida Marlins and play in the South Atlantic League.

A native of Ada, Minn., Everson played his high school baseball at Ada-Borup High School and his collegiate baseball at Valley City State University and Mayville State University. Everson played seven years of minor league baseball including stints with the Montreal Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox organizations. He spent time in the Northern League with the Madison (Wis.) Black Wolf and the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Everson was named Team MVP of the Black Wolf and won the league's Ironman Award for most consecutive games played with the Goldeyes. He also managed the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers of the New York - Penn League prior to his arrival in Greensboro.

"We are thrilled that Darin Everson has agreed to be the guest speaker at this year's dinner" says University of Minnesota, Crookston Head Baseball Coach Chris Vito. "He is a true local success story and will be an outstanding speaker. Last year's dinner was tremendous. We expect that this year's program will be even more successful."

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) exploded for six goals in the second half to break open a scoreless game on their way to a 6-1 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) women's soccer action today in Crookston, Minn.

On a cold and rainy day that saw wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, the Golden Eagles put up a strong fight holding the Bulldogs scoreless through the first half.  However, UMD took control as six different players scored the next six goals.

Whitney Wilson got things started at 52:54 off assists from Becky Anderson and Molly Nepote. Anderson got into the goal column at 54:10 off assists from Alex Paffrath and Kelly Duchene. Reegan Lloyd scored an unassisted goal at 57:42 to make the score 3-0. Clare Dahmen found the back of the Golden Eagle net at 58:51 off Anderson and Paffrath's second assists of the day. Anna Gradeen got into the action at 69:51 with a goal off Cassie Shepherd's corner kick. Abby Serreyn closed out UMD's scoring at 74:24 with an unassisted goal.

Megan Flynn (Fr, Def, Chanhassen, Minn.) got the University of Minnesota, Crookston on the board at 76:28 with an unassisted goal.

UMD's Hannah Bengston played 81:29 in net recording 4 saves before being relieved by Hanna Iazzo. Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) played 61:06 in net recording nine saves. Carmen Sanchez (Fr, GK, Naples, Fla.) played 28:54 in net recording three saves.

The University of Minnesota Duluth improves to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-7-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the NSIC.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston will return to action on Friday, October 2 and Sunday, October 4 when they hit the road for NSIC games against Concordia University - St. Paul and St. Cloud State University in St. Paul and St. Cloud, Minn. The matches will start at 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.

Saturday's show will begin at 1 p.m. while Sunday's events will start at 9 a.m.

 

Golden Eagle Head Coach Brooke Leininger is excited to start the 2009-2010 campaign. Returnees include Jessica Biddle (Sr, Elburn, Ill.), Laura Critchett (Jr, Shoreview, Minn.), Nicole Veres (Sr, Random Lake, Wis.), Lauren Snively (So, Herndon, Vir.), Sara Wells (Sr, Calgary, Alb.), Megan Claybundy (Jr, International Falls, Minn.), Heather Fogelson (So, Grant, Minn.) and Lydia Lestingi (So, Clemons, N.Y.).

 

"Senior Jessica Biddle came back this fall stronger and more consistent in her riding and I expect to see her qualify for the regional championships," says Golden Eagle Head Coach Brooke Leininger. "Senior Nicole Veres also trained consistently over the summer months and is looking to make her senior year her best one yet.  She came inches away from qualifying for the Zone Finals last year and expect to see her make it there this year along with our other top athletes."

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team returned to Lysaker Gymnasium today to face St. Cloud State University this afternoon. The Golden Eagles came out slow losing the first two sets, but picked up their game battling to a five set match that lasted just shy of two hours. U of M, Crookston fought hard in sets four and five where the score was tied a total of 21 times with 10 lead changes. Ultimately, the Huskies bested the Golden Eagles with a 17-15 fifth set victory to take the match 3-2 (25-14, 25-18, 17-25, 24-26, 17-15).
 
Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led all attackers with a match-high 23 kills. She recorded five service aces including four in a row in the third set. Alyssa Krikke (MH, 6-0, JR, Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Ashley Allen (OH, 5-11, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) added double-digit kills with 15 and 12 respectively. As a team U of M, Crookston had 60 kills in the match, equal to the Huskies. Setting for the Golden Eagles was Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) who posted an impressive 57 assists good for a match-high. Libero Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) earned 18 defensive digs in the match. As a team the Golden Eagles had 10 block assists with five of those coming from Alyssa Krikke.
 
The Huskies were carried offensively by two athletes who recorded over half of their total kills. Kayla Tschida led the way with 20 kills and solid .425 (20K, 3E, 40TA) attack percentage. Ashley Shield posted 16 kills and a .306 (16K, 5E, 36TA) attack percentage. Leading the team in defensive digs was Sarah Madden with a match-high 19.
 
The Golden Eagles are 3-14 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC while the Huskies advance to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play. U of M, Crookston continues play on Tuesday, September 29th at home taking on Lakehead University out of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The non-conference match is set to start at 7 p.m.

(Moorhead, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team traveled to MSU Moorhead this afternoon for a classic NSIC rivalry game. The Golden Eagles have taken the last five of six games from the Dragons with each contest being a 60-minute grudge match. The U of M, Crookston offense out-gained the Dragon offense 354 to 339 but a perfect 4-4 red-zone scoring and a Tyler Hewson 75-yard interception return helped MSU Moorhead sneak away with the 24-13 conference victory.
 
The first quarter stayed scoreless until the 1:47 mark as both defenses fought hard to hold the line of scrimmage. MSU Moorhead earned the first points of the game on a six play, 58-yard drive that was capped off by a Zach Fry 10-yard touchdown strike to Tommy Gochis. The Golden Eagles responded in the second quarter when quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) went to the air and found Jordan Lecher (WR, 6-3, 195, SO, Litchfield, Minn.) on a nine yard touchdown pass that concluded an eight play, 85-yard drive. A quick two minute Dragon offense was able to take advantage of the final 1:22 driving 74-yards on five plays in just 59 seconds to get runningback Bre McWilliams into the Golden Eagle endzone on a five yard rush to take a 14-7 lead into the half.
 
The second half started much the same as the first. Both teams established solid drives but neither could find pay dirt until U of M, Crookston broke the trend at the 2:33 mark when Lecher caught is second touchdown of the day on a five yard pass from Ennis. A bad snap thwarted the UMC point after attempt and kept MSU Moorhead out in front 14-13. In the fourth quarter, the Dragons added a 38-yard field goal by Jimmie Mattson to take a 17-13 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a nine play, 47-yard drive. U of M, Crookston drove the ball to the MSU Moorhead 25-yard line and on a critical fourth down and seven yards, Tyler Hewson intercepted the Ennis pass and returned it 75-yards to the Golden Eagle eight yard line. Enol Gilles took the first snap of the drive eight yards for the game changing touchdown that solidified the 24-13 Dragon victory.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by runningback Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) who rushed 33 times for 168-yards. He alone outrushed the Dragons 168 to 46. Tim Ennis completed 17 passes on 35 attempts for 192-yards and two touchdowns. Lecher caught 10 passes for 87-yards and two touchdowns including a spectacular one-handed grab in the back of the Dragon endzone. The Golden Eagle defense was led by Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, FR, Edison, Ga.) who had a team high nine tackles (5 solo, 4 assisted). The defense as a whole had five tackles for a loss of 18-yards, two forced fumbles both recovered by U of M, Crookston and one interception.
 
The Dragons were led by Zach Fry who completed a solid 28 passes on 33 attempts for 293-yards and one touchdown. Joe Johnson caught seven passes for 61-yards. Jake Larsen led all defenders with 10 total tackles (5 solo, 5 assisted). The Dragon defense had seven tackles for a loss of 21-yards and two interceptions.
 
The Golden Eagles are 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC. The Dragons are now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. U of M, Crookston hosts Northern State University on Saturday, October 3 for UMC Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team finally returned home after a five-week road stint. The travel got easier but the competition got tougher as U of M, Crookston welcomed the 2007-2008 NCAA Division II National Champion Concordia University- St. Paul. The Golden Eagles tied the score five times and swapped three lead changes with the Golden Bears through the first set but it was Concordia who took control after that to take the match 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-7).

U of M, Crookston libero, Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) led all defenders with 15 digs. Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with eight kills. She was followed by Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) who had seven kills. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) paced the team with 22 assists and Alyssa Krikke (MH, 6-0, JR, Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the team with three assisted blocks.

Concordia University as a team attacked at a .512 (48K-4E-86TA) clip. Sadie Kessler led all players with 15 kills and an amazing .789 (15K-0E-19TA) attack percentage. She was followed by Cassie Haag who had11 kills and a .550 (11K-0E-20TA) attack percentage. She also tallied a match high eight assisted blocks. The Golden Bears only committed four attack errors in the match. All-American Maggie McNamara led all setters with 42 assists.

The Golden Eagles are 3-13 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC while the Golden Bears advance to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. U of M, Crookston hosts St. Cloud State tomorrow at Lysaker Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Soccer team put forth a valiant effort today at the UMC Soccer Field but were edged 1-0 by Bemidji State University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match. The Golden Eagles were defeated by the Beavers 5-1 in a non-conference match back on September 8.

After a scoreless first half, Bemidji State University got the only goal they would need when Tiffany Van Haaften scored off an assist from Rachel Gustafson to give the Beavers the 1-0 victory.

University of Minnesota, Crookston's Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) was outstanding in net stopping six Bemidji State University shots.

The Beavers improve to 6-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the NSIC. They will return to action on Sunday, September 27 when they play host to the University of Minnesota Duluth in an NSIC match. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. at the UMC Soccer Field.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC Teambackers will hold the first coaches' luncheon of the season this Friday, September 25 at the Crookston Eagles Club. Lunch will be served and the fall coaches will give updates on their seasons to date, along with outlooks on their upcoming games. (St. Cloud, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Golf team traveled to the St. Cloud Country Club on Sunday, September 20 and Monday, September 21 to take part in the SCSU Husky Classic. Jared Miettunen (JR, Virginia, Minn.) shot a team best 77 (+5) through the first 18 holes and was seven strokes behind leader Chris Curb from Bemidji State University (70/-2). Jake Sanders (JR, Crookston, Minn.) shot a 79 (+7) through 18 holes but rebounded to shoot a team best 75 on day two to finish with a score of 154 (+10) tied for 25th place. Payne Forester (SO, South St. Paul, Minn.) had a solid weekend shooting a 155 to finish one stroke behind Sanders. Forester finished tied for 31st place.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Upper Iowa Women's Soccer team scored three goals in the first half and then added two more in the second on their way to a 5-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over the University of Minnesota, Crookston today in Fayette, Iowa.

The Peacocks got on the board at 3:34 as Alyssa Petersburg scored an unassisted goal to put the University of Upper Iowa up 1-0. They struck again at 8:37 as Valeria Ptasinski scored off an assist from Liz Kaluzinski. Shaina Marnell made the score 3-0 at 38:17 off assists from Lauren Verhulst and Amy Campbell. The Peacocks stretched their lead to 4-0 at 66:03 when Christine Dwyer scored off assists from Jamie Krusie and Marnell. The scoring was closed out at 86:03 when Emma Vanderheyden scored an unassisted goal that made the score 5-0.

Melissa Heitzman recorded four saves to get the shutout.

The University of Upper Iowa improves to 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the NSIC.

(Bemidji, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team traveled to Bemidji, Minn. this afternoon to finish up the NSIC road weekend. U of M, Crookston, which tallied only 16 kills on 17 errors last night against Minnesota Duluth, recorded 32 kills today but added 19 attack errors in the 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-22) loss to the Beavers of Bemidji State. BSU controlled sets one and two, not allowing a tie score or a lead change. The Golden Eagles fought back in set three trading five lead changes and 12 tie scores but Bemidji State held off the charge to earn the team's first conference victory of the season.

Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagles and all attackers with 10 kills and had a solid night defensively with 10 defensive digs and a match-high five block assists. Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) led all players with a .462 (6K-0E-13TA) attack percentage. Setter Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) paced all setters with 28 kill assists in the match.

Bemidji State was led by Bethany Thompson who recorded eight kills in the match. Nicole Olson and Nicole Solum both finished the contest with six kills each. Courtney Bitter tallied 27 kills assists while Laura Carlson finished with a match-high three service aces and 15 defensive digs.

The Golden Eagles are 3-12 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC while the Beavers advance to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles open the home conference season this Friday, September 25 when 2008 National Champion Concordia University- St. Paul comes to town. (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team hosted the University of Mary today at Ed Widseth Field on the U of M, Crookston campus. The Marauders jumped out to a 23-0 first half lead but the Golden Eagle squad persevered returning to the field in the second half to score 14 points to tie the Marauders 14-14 in the final 30-minutes of play. Mary used the first half lead to take the NSIC victory 37-14.

Mary controlled the first 30-minutes of play compiling 14 first downs while holding U of M, Crookston to just one. The Marauders racked up 244 yards of total offense to the Golden Eagles 43 yards and controlled the clock keeping the U of M, Crookston defense on the field for 19 minutes. Mary knocked the wind out of the Golden Eagles early when on the opening kickoff, Terry Newsome scampered 98-yards for a Marauder kickoff return that took just 14 seconds off the clock. The two teams battled for the rest of the quarter to a scoreless tie. Mary did most of the damage in the second half scoring three more times to take a 23-0 halftime lead. At the 9:56 mark of the second quarter, kicker Rett Thibodeaux hit a 21-yard field goal to cap a seven play, 45-yard drive to give Mary a 10-0 lead. Quarterback Henry Lau got into the action with 2:18 left in the half when he hit Jamal Lomax on a four-yard pass completing an 11 play, 46-yard drive. The Golden Eagle offense when three-and-out and timely timeouts by the Marauders allowed them to get the ball back and score with 27 seconds left on a 16-yard Lau pass to Terry Newsome. First half leaders for the Golden Eagles were Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) who rushed 12 times for 27-yards. Quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) was 2-5 for 18-yards, completing both passes to Jordan Lecher (WR, 6-3, 195, SO, Litchfield, Minn.). Kyle Myers (LB, 5-10, 255, SR, Palmyra, N.J.) led the Golden Eagle defense with seven total tackles. Mary was led offensively by quarterback Henry Lau who completed 15 of 21 passes for 148-yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Lomax rushed 17 times for 80-yards and Terry Newsome caught six passes for 67-yards and one score.

The Golden Eagle offense was reborn in the second half as the team took the opening kickoff 70-yards on 12 plays that covered 6:54 of the third quarter. The drive was capped off by a perfectly thrown ball by Ennis into the hands of wide receiver Neil King (WR, 5-5, 145, SO, Sebastian, Fla.) for a 20-yard touchdown strike to cut the Mary lead to 23-7. Mary rebounded with an eight play, 48-yard drive that ended with a Lau pass to Rob Gibson for an 11-yard touchdown strike. U of M, Crookston again answered the bell with the biggest drive of the game, a drive that saw the maroon and gold march 74-yards in 11 plays with McBride finding the endzone on a five-yard rush. Marauders quarterback Henry Lau would close out the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alex Gilbertson with 7:39 remaining in the game to hold on to the 37-14 victory. Game leaders for the Golden Eagles were McBride who rushed 25 times for 74-yards and one touchdown. Ennis was 11-19 for 112-yards and one touchdown. Lecher finished the game with five receptions for 59-yards and King finished with two receptions for 24-yards and one touchdown. Kolby Gruhot (DL, 6-3, 250, SO, Argyle, Minn.) was named Teambacker Defensive Player-Of-The-Game for his game-high nine tackles (6 unassisted, 3 assisted). He also recorded one tackle-for-a-loss of three-yards. The Golden Eagle offense that tallied 43-yards in the first half, recorded 157-yards in the second half to finish with 200-yards of total offense in the game.

The University of Mary was led by Henry Lau who completed 21 passes in 29 attempts for 203-yards and four touchdowns. Jamal Lomax rushed 27 times for 158-yards and averaged 5.9 yards/rush. Newsome was the big target recording six receptions for 67-yards including the 98-yard kickoff return to open the game. The Marauder defense was led by Joey Olsen and Caleb Thompson who each recorded seven tackles in the game.

The Golden Eagles are 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC. The Marauders are now 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston travels to MSU Moorhead on Saturday, September 26 to battle the Dragons. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

(Crookston, Minn.)- Winona State University opened up a 3-0 lead after one half of play and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston today in Winona, Minn. It was the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opener for both squads.

Lauren Sturdivant supplied all the fire power the Warriors would need recording all three goals. She struck first at 11:52 off assists from Sara Palizzi and Amanda Dennis. Sturdivant scored her second goal of the contest at 14:40 when she took an assist from Martha Curtiss. It was Sturdivant from Dennis at 17:08 to close out the scoring at 3-0.

Anna Belpedio recorded two saves to gain the shutout for Winona State University. Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) recorded seven saves for the Golden Eagles.

The Warriors improve to 4-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they travel to Fayette, Iowa to take on the University of Upper Iowa in an NSIC contest.

Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the Golden Eagle attack with nine kills in the match. Her two service aces were also a team match high. The Golden Eagles took control in the first half and never looked back. Justine Jones (Sr, Fwd, Richland, Wash.) opened the scoring at 32:00 off an assist from Gibeault. Kaitlyn Ostergren (Fr, MF, Lino Lakes, Minn.) got into the act at 41:00 off an assist from Gibeault to make the score 2-0. U of M, Crookston closed out the scoring at 68:00 when Gibeault capped her stellar day with an unassisted goal to make the score 3-0.

Ogaard continued her outstanding play in net with 11 saves.

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- The opening of Kirkeby-Over Stadium on the Augustana College campus has shined brightly on the Augustana Vikings football team. The Vikings are 3-0 overall (2-0 at home) and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with a 49-0 victory over U of M, Crookston this afternoon.

Augustana opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game on a Joe Clark 37-yard touchdown run that capped off a three-play, 60-yard drive. At the 4:50 mark of the first quarter, wide receiver Tyler Shulte utilized the wildcat offense to score on a five yard rush to lift the Vikings to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Quarterback Luke Butler had a strong second quarter throwing for two touchdowns. Butler found Sam Holsen at the 6:57 mark for a 43-yard touchdown completion and then connected with Joe Klumper with 1:05 left in the half for a 21-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 28-0. The Golden Eagle offense put together a six-play, 57-yard drive that set up a 35-yard field goal attempt by Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, FR, Hollywood, Fla.). The attempt was blocked by Jesse Jones and closed out the scoring chances in the first half. Augustana found the Golden Eagle endzone two more times in the third quarter on a Joe Clark seven yard run and a Josh Hanson 22-yard run. The lone score of the fourth quarter came with 1:53 left in the game when quarterback Ryan Schuetz hit Alex Kjellsen for a 67-yard touchdown strike.

U of M, Crookston was led offensively by quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) who completed seven passes for 72-yards. Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) rushed 22 times for 56-yards with a long of 25-yards. Four Golden Eagle receivers caught passes this afternoon. Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 215, JR, West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Scott Stenger (WR, 6-2, 180, SO, Watkins, Minn.) caught two passes for 14-yards while Charles Van Zandt (TE, 6-3, 240, SO, Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jordan Lecher (WR, 6-3, 195, SO, Litchfield, Minn.) caught two passes for 30-yards each. The Argos are an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school and hold an overall record of 0-4-0 and Frontier Conference record of 0-1 after dropping a 2-0 decision to Westminster College on Monday. Ashley Pezl leads the University of Great Falls with two goals for four points. Samantha Davies has a 3.60 goals against average and a .550 saves percentage.

Golden Eagles vs. Montana State - Billings  Sunday, September 13  11 a.m.

The Yellowjackets have an overall record of 2-2-0 after defeating Augustana College 3-2 on Sunday. They are led by Jaucelyn Richter who has scored three goals and added one assist for seven points. Jordan Fenwick has a 1.67 goals against average and a .731 saves percentage.

The University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) at the University of Minnesota, Crookston will host an open house on Thursday, October 1, 2009. From 4-7 p.m. the campus and community will have an opportunity to meet the faculty and staff from the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department as well as visit the horses, beef cattle and sheep in the UTOC facilities.

Guests can watch the Equestrian teams practice beginning at 4:30 p.m. with horse jumping, and later at 5:45 p.m., the western team will be practicing reining.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Soccer team opened the home portion of the 2009 season today with a non-conference match against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Bemidji State University. The Beavers opened up a 2-0 halftime lead and added three second half goals on their way to a 5-1 victory on a rainy, windy day in Crookston, Minn.

Bemidji State University opened the scoring at 24:18 when Kirsten Erickson scored off an assist from Ashlee Ellefsen. The Beavers made the score 2-0 when Ellefsen found the back of the Golden Eagles net off an assist from Erickson at 30:27.

Bemidji State University continued its offensive success at 61:36 when Brianna Duff scored off an assist from Yesenia Garcia. Garcia got into the goal column at 72:45 off assists from Ellefsen and Erickson. Kelly Pointon closed out the scoring for the Beavers at 76:55 when she scored off Erickson's third assist of the game.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston got on the board at 78:45 of the game when Justine Jones (Sr, Fwd, Richland, Wash.) scored off a penalty kick to make the final score 5-1 in favor of Bemidji State University.

Samantha Ross recorded three saves for the Beavers while Abby Kjonaas recorded five.

Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) stopped 11 shots for U of M, Crookston while Carmen Sanchez (Fr, GK, Naples, Fla.) recorded two saves in her first collegiate appearance.

Bemidji State University improves to 3-1-0 on the season while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2-1.

U of M, Crookston returns to action with a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 when they travel to Bismarck, N.D. to face the University of Great Falls (Mont.) and Montana State University - Billings at 2 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

(Findlay, Ohio)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball closed out the 2009 University of Findlay Classic on Saturday, September 5 against host University of Findlay and Hillsdale College falling 1-3 and 0-3 in the final two matches. The Golden Eagles have had a tumultuous opening to the 2009 season, playing to date, eight matches on the road with another seven over the next two weeks. U of M, Crookston opens at home on Friday, September 25 against reigning National Champion Concordia University- St. Paul. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.

(UMC vs. University of Findlay)- The Golden Eagles rocketed out of the starting blocks against Findlay taking the first set 25-10. The Oilers responded taking the next three sets 25-11, 25-14, 25-22 to take the four set victory. Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) led the Golden Eagles with a match-high tying 11 kills and a .400 (11K-3E-20TA) attack percentage. Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) followed Swann with 10 kills in the match. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) assisted on 26 of the Golden Eagles 33 kills and added a team high three service aces. Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) tied a match high with 10 defensive digs.

The Oilers were led by Erin Thomasson's 11 kills. Megan Florence and Jessica VonIns split the setter duties recording 18 and 15 assists respectively. Abby LaVigne matched Slepicka with 10 defensive digs for Findlay.

(UMC vs. Hillsdale College)- Hillsdale College used a strong, well-balanced attack and a team hitting percentage of .366 (46K-12E-93TA) to defeat U of M, Crookston 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-15). The Golden Eagles were led by Meyer who recorded eight kills and a .353 (8K-2E-17TA) attack percentage. Cologna tallied 15 assists while Slepicka finished the match with 10 defensive digs.

The Chargers were led by Clara Leutheuser who recorded nine kills and finished with a .438 (9K-2E-16TA) attack percentage. Apryl Schmucker earned 34 assists and added one service ace. Morgan Podkul led the Charger defense with a match-high 11 defensive digs.

The Golden Eagles are now 2-6 on the season. The team travels to the UW-Parkside Invitational on September 11 and 12. The team will play St. Joseph's University and Quincy University on Friday and close out the event against the University of Indianapolis and UW-Parkside.

The Golden Eagles were finally rewarded for their solid play as Justine Jones (Sr, Fwd, Richland, Wash.) scored an unassisted goal at 51:20 to give U of M, Crookston a 1-0 win over Northwestern College of Iowa today at the Dordt/Northwestern Pizza Ranch Classic in Orange City, Iowa. It was also the first win for new head coach Richard Jones.

(Findlay, Ohio)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball team entered its second match of the University of Findlay Classic riding a big five-set victory over Lake Superior State University. The Golden Eagles won the match with no set being decided by more than four points. The second challenge of the tournament was undefeated Wayne State University. This time around, no set was decided by more than there points, unfortunately U of M, Crookston came up short in each of the three sets 25-22.
 
The Golden Eagles as a team attacked the ball well with a solid .262 (42K-15E-103TA) attack percentage. Leading the offensive charge was Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) who led all attackers with 16 kills. She added two more points on the defensive side of the ball with two block assists. Alyssa Krikke (MH, 6-0, JR, Grand Rapids, Mich.) led all players with a .538 (8K-1E-13TA) attack percentage while Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) added nine kills, a .421 (9K-1E-19TA) attack percentage and two block assists. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) led the setters with 36 assists and added five digs. Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) continued to lead the Golden Eagle defense with a match high 20 defensive digs.
 
The Warriors as a team were very efficient on the offensive side of the ball attacking at a .324 (43K-9E-105TA) clip. The team was led by Sarha Gosselin's 15 kills and .419 (15K-2E-31TA) attack percentage. Candis Jenich added 11 kills while Cydney Biessel assisted on 32 of the 43 team kills. Lauren Mallast led all players in the match with three solo blocks.
 
The Golden Eagles are now 2-4 on the season while Warriors improve to a perfect 6-0. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday, September 5 at 1:30 p.m. to take on the University of Findlay.

This time the Golden Eagles fell victim to a goal in the 107th minute as the Dordt College won 1-0 in the Dordt/Northwestern Pizza Ranch Classic in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Morgan Rodenburgh's unassisted goal gave the defenders the victory.

Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) was stellar in net for U of M, Crookston stopping 11 Dordt shots.

The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 0-1-1 on the season. U of M, Crookston will return to action on Saturday, September 5 at 11:00 am when they travel to Orange City, Iowa to face Northwestern College in the final game of the Dordt/Northwestern Pizza Ranch Classic.

(Findlay, Ohio)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball team entered the University of Findlay Classic today with a five set battle against Lake Superior State University with no set decided by more than four points. The two teams swapped wins through the first four sets with the Golden Eagles sweeping set four and five to take the match 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13).
 
The Golden Eagles used strong defense with 84 defensive digs and 7.5 total team blocks in the match to hold the Laker's to a .165 (56K-27E-176TA) team attack percentage. Lake Superior State as a team did not hit over .200 while U of M, Crookston hit well over .200 in four of the five sets (.265, .393, .087, .290, .235).
 
Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) led the offensive charge with a match and season high 19 kills and a .350 (19K-5E-40TA) attack percentage. Ashley Allen (OH, 5-11, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) and Alyssa Krikke (MH, 6-0, JR, Grand Rapids, Mich.) followed Meyer with 11 kills each. Setter Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) had an outstanding afternoon with a career high 48 assists, career high seven kills and a career high 15 digs. Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) led all defenders with five block assists and added six kills and two service aces. Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) set a season high with 25 defensive digs for the Golden Eagles.
 
The Laker's were led by Jessica Ewer's 15 kills and .400 (15K-3E-30TA) attack percentage. She was followed by Abby Shereda and Nikki Stratelak who finished the match with 12 kills apiece. Janelle Balkwill assisted on 32 Laker kills and tallied a match high four service aces. Brittany Newberry led all players with 30 defensive digs for Lake Superior State.
 
The Golden Eagles are now 2-3 on the season while Lake Superior State falls to 0-5 overall. U of M, Crookston returns to the court this afternoon to do battle with Wayne State University (MI) at 5 p.m.

(Mayville, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team traveled to Mayville, N.D. on Thursday, September 3 for an evening non-conference matchup with the Comets of Mayville State University. The Golden Eagles opened the game with 24 unanswered points before the Comets finally put points up with 2:37 left in the second quarter. Mayville scored the only points in the third quarter to get within 24-14 but U of M, Crookston went on a 23-7 run to put the game away 47-21.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) hit Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 215, JR, West Palm Beach, Fla.) for a five-yard touchdown reception at the 5:17 mark. Early in the second quarter, U of M, Crookston capped a 10 play, 67-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal by Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, FR, Hollywood, Fla.) to extend the lead to 10-0. Ennis and Williams connected again at the 10:42 mark of the second quarter on a 30-yard touchdown strike to finish a seven play, 63-yard drive. Runningback Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) busted onto the scoring scene with a game high 24-yard rush to add to his 162 first half rushing total. Through the first half, McBride average 8.1 yards/carry. The Comets finally found a little offense at the 2:37 mark of the second quarter when quarterback Jake McLain rushed for a six-yard score on a 10 play, 68-yard drive. The Golden Eagles entered the half with a comfortable 24-7 lead.

Mayville State came out in the second half and took the opening kickoff on another 10 play, 68-yard drive to cut their deficit to 24-14 on the only scoring drive of the quarter. McLain was again the offensive power as he rushed for the four-yard score and kicked the point after. The fourth quarter was all U of M, Crookston as the Golden Eagles went on a 23-7 scoring run. Marcus Galan (RB, 5-6, 165, FR, Pico Rivera, Calif.) opened the scoring with an eight-yard run at the 12:32 mark. Galan's score ended a nine-play, 77-yard drive that took 3:18 off the clock. The Golden Eagle defense got into the scoring picture at 7:37 when they forced McLain into an intentional grounding penalty in the endzone which resulted in a team safety for U of M, Crookston. At the 5:27 mark, Ennis went to the air again, finding Cornelius King (WR, 5-5, 145, SO, Sebastian, Fla.) on a 14-yard touchdown strike to put the Golden Eagles up 40-14. The Comets found the endzone one more time when McLain hit Tanner Carpenter for a 13-yard touchdown but the Golden Eagles responded with 36 seconds left in regulation when Jerome Rodney (RB, 5-7, 200, JR, Mountain Lake, Minn.) scampered for a 12-yard score to give the Golden Eagles the 47-21 victory.

McBride led the Golden Eagles with 207 yards rushing on 28 carries. He averaged 7.4 yards/carry and scored one touchdown. Ennis finished the game 13-22 for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Williams was the main target for Ennis as he finished with seven receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively the Golden Eagles were led by Austin Barton (LB, 6-0, 205, FR, Orlando, Fla.) who tallied seven total tackles (3 solo, 4 assisted) and two tackles for a loss of five yards. Broderick Williams (DB, 5-9, 200, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Rafael Ortega (LB, 6-0, 230, FR, Los Angeles, Calif.) each forced a fumble while Kolby Gruhot (DL, 6-3, 250, SO, Argyle, Minn.), Shelton Derisma (DL, 6-1, 265, SR, Miami, Fla.) and Braland Geter (DL, 5-11, 290, FR, Newnan, Ga.) each tallied sacks. As a team, the Golden Eagles racked up 501 yards of total offense on 68 plays. On the ground, U of M, Crookston earned 330 yards on 45 carries. In the air, the team totaled 171 yards on 23 attempts. The red-zone offense was perfect on the evening for the Golden Eagles as the team scored five times on five trips inside the red-zone.
The Comets were led by quarterback Jake McLain who completed 21 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. McLain rushed 18 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Tanner Carpenter led the receiving core with eight receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Artez Faniel led all defenders with 11 total tackles (6 solo, 5 assisted.

The Golden Eagles are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC, while the Comets drop to 0-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, September 12 to take on the Vikings of Augustana College in NSIC action. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.

Crookston, Minn.  - Two alumni and a local radio personality will be inducted into the University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Hall of Fame during homecoming weekend. The 2009 inductees include Christina (Nettum) Cyr, '97, Al Strandberg, ex.'79, and Frank Fee, president and general manager of KROX AM radio in Crookston. A recognition event will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009, in Bede Ballroom. The evening begins with a social at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by a program recognizing the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and the outstanding alumni for 2009.

The 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees:

Al Strandberg, ex.'79, played football for the U of M, Crookston Trojans. Named most valuable player, Strandberg was also named All American, All Region, and All Conference while playing with the Trojans. His remaining two years of eligibility he played for Minnesota State University Moorhead and was All Conference both years. He signed as a free agent in 1981 with the Dallas Cowboys and played two pre-season games with them before being released due to an ankle injury. Strandberg was picked up by the Arizona Wranglers of the United States where he played for a year for them and briefly for the Chicago Blitz.

Christina "Chrissy" (Nettum) Cyr, '97, was an outstanding member of both the women's
basketball and volleyball teams. She was awarded student-athlete of the year in 1995 and again in 1997 for her outstanding athletic and academic performance. All Conference in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC) in 1996, Cyr was recognized as the most valuable player in both volleyball and women's basketball in 1995 and 1997 and a member of the all-academic team from 1995-97. In volleyball, Cyr holds the record for most solo blocks in a season and most career blocks.

Frank Fee has covered the University of Minnesota, Crookston athletic programs for many years traveling thousands of miles to cover athletic events for KROX AM radio in Crookston. He is the president and owner of the station, serving as sales manager and sports director as well. Fee, a loyal supporter of the Golden Eagles, has a dedication that is unprecedented. He also has served on numerous advisory committees for the campus. In 1983, Fee was recognized with the Torch & Shield award, the highest honor an individual can receive from the Crookston campus.

The induction ceremony for the U of M, Crookston Athletic Hall of Fame will also include recognition of this year's outstanding alumni: Mary Jo (Melbye) Eastes, '79; David Genereux,'80; Troy Olson, '89; and Karissa (Dahl) Olson, '99.

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Soccer team opened the 2009 season with new head coach Richard Jones against Jamestown College on Tuesday afternoon in Jamestown, N.D. The Golden Eagles tied the Jimmies 1-1 in double overtime in a non-conference match.

U of M, Crookston opened the scoring at 67:50 of the match when Stephanie Lee (Jr, Def, Scarsdale, N.Y.) scored off a corner kick from Megan Flynn (Fr, Def, Chanhassen, Minn.) to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. The Jimmies countered when Lauren Cottom scored an unassisted goal at 75:50 to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score in the two overtime stanzas making the final score 1-1.

Emily Schmidt stopped five Golden Eagles shots while Angela Veches added two saves.

U of M, Crookston's Anna Ogaard (Jr, GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) stopped seven Jamestown College shots.

The Golden Eagles will return to action this Friday and Saturday when they hit the road for a pair of non-conference matches. On Friday, September 4, U of M, Crookston will take on Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles will face Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa on Saturday, September 5. The match will start at 11:00 a.m.
