(Findlay, Ohio)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's volleyball closed out the 2009 University of Findlay Classic on Saturday, September 5 against host University of Findlay and Hillsdale College falling 1-3 and 0-3 in the final two matches. The Golden Eagles have had a tumultuous opening to the 2009 season, playing to date, eight matches on the road with another seven over the next two weeks. U of M, Crookston opens at home on Friday, September 25 against reigning National Champion Concordia University- St. Paul. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
(UMC vs. University of Findlay)- The Golden Eagles rocketed out of the starting blocks against Findlay taking the first set 25-10. The Oilers responded taking the next three sets 25-11, 25-14, 25-22 to take the four set victory. Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, FR, Rochester, Mich.) led the Golden Eagles with a match-high tying 11 kills and a .400 (11K-3E-20TA) attack percentage. Amber Meyer (OH, 6-2, JR, Paxton, Neb.) followed Swann with 10 kills in the match. Shannon Cologna (S, 5-6, JR, Peoria, Ariz.) assisted on 26 of the Golden Eagles 33 kills and added a team high three service aces. Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5-2, SR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) tied a match high with 10 defensive digs.
The Oilers were led by Erin Thomasson's 11 kills. Megan Florence and Jessica VonIns split the setter duties recording 18 and 15 assists respectively. Abby LaVigne matched Slepicka with 10 defensive digs for Findlay.
(UMC vs. Hillsdale College)- Hillsdale College used a strong, well-balanced attack and a team hitting percentage of .366 (46K-12E-93TA) to defeat U of M, Crookston 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-15). The Golden Eagles were led by Meyer who recorded eight kills and a .353 (8K-2E-17TA) attack percentage. Cologna tallied 15 assists while Slepicka finished the match with 10 defensive digs.
The Chargers were led by Clara Leutheuser who recorded nine kills and finished with a .438 (9K-2E-16TA) attack percentage. Apryl Schmucker earned 34 assists and added one service ace. Morgan Podkul led the Charger defense with a match-high 11 defensive digs.
The Golden Eagles are now 2-6 on the season. The team travels to the UW-Parkside Invitational on September 11 and 12. The team will play St. Joseph's University and Quincy University on Friday and close out the event against the University of Indianapolis and UW-Parkside.
