U of M, Crookston to Begin Search for New Head Football Coach

Contact: Andrew Svec, director of communications, 218-281-8438 (asvec@umn.edu)

CROOKSTON, Minn. (November 15, 2010) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston announced today that Head Football Coach Shannon Stassen's contract has not been renewed.  Stassen had served as the head football coach for the Crookston campus since 2002.  The search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.

"While we genuinely appreciate the effort, level of commitment, and loyalty Coach Stassen has shown during his tenure, the Golden Eagle football program has not reached established goals," said Steph Helgeson, director of athletics.

U of M, Crookston Chancellor Charles Casey, D.V.M., said, "As a campus we have strived to rise to the level of competition in all our varsity sports.  While we've made progress in some areas, the football program has simply not met the goals we had set for it.  We've determined a change in leadership of the football program is the decision we need to make at this time."  Casey added, "I do want to thank Coach Stassen for his service and contributions and wish him well."

Stassen joined the U of M, Crookston football program in 1998 as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator, and he continued in that capacity through the 2001 season.  He was named interim head coach in July of 2002, and in February of 2003 he was officially named head football coach for the Golden Eagles.

Helgeson said, "There is no question Shannon has been a positive role model through some very challenging times here at the Crookston campus and in the history of UMC football.  We sincerely wish him and his family the very best."

2010NFLYouthSBChamps copy.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- Despite the season the professional Minnesota Vikings are having, purple and gold fans from across the region now have reason to stand up and cheer. On Sunday, November 7, the underdog Vikings NFL Youth Flag Football team marched onto the muddy tundra of Ed Widseth Field and did what many thought was impossible; the Vikings defeated the top ranked 49ers 27-25 for a piece of NFL Youth Superbowl glory.

Coming into the final matchup, the 49ers were a perfect 7-0 while the Vikings were an impressive 6-1. Both teams struggled on the defensive side of the ball in the first half as both offenses seemed to score at will. In the second half, the game got interesting with the 49ers taking the lead for just a short period of time, but perseverance of the young Vikings squad showed through as they scored a touchdown late in the game to take the championship by two points. This is the second year in a row the superbowl has been decided by two points or less.

Members of the 2010 champion Vikings include: John Wuitschick, Sam Overgaard, Kyle Alfso, Tayson Ambuchl, Nick Garmen, Killian Kuchan, Joey Doda, Isaiah Aquino, Caleb Amundson, and Peyton Swanson. Coaches are Jason Burdick, Ben McGraw, and Jonique Andrews, all members of the Golden Eagle Football team.

The Vikings team will receive their medals at a Super Bowl celebration party at Happy Joe's on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. All team members of the Vikings and 49ers are invited to the pizza celebration party Thursday night at Happy Joe's in recognition of their tremendous play all season.

Despite the score, the Golden Eagles played tough against an offense that has scored 40 or more points eight times this season and a defense that has held opponents to under 20 points in nine games. Senior, tight end, Chris Clay (TE, 6-6, 220, Sr, Ypsilanti, Mich.) led the receiving core with two catches for 62 yards including the team-long of 32 yards. Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, So, Lodi, Wis.) rushed 18 times for 30 yards and one touchdown. The two yard score in the fourth quarter capped off a nine play, 66 yard drive that took 5:21.

He also forced a third quarter fumble which fellow linebacker Rob Huberty picked up and ran six yards for a touchdown which all but sealed the Bulldogs win over the Huskies. Fechtelkotter, a 2009 All-NSIC North Division first team honoree and a team captain, played a major role in holding the NSIC's second-highest scoring team to 16 points below its season average. Senior running back Brad Foss eclipsed the 100-yard rushing barrier for the third time in as many weeks Saturday against St. Cloud State, running for 117 yards on 22 carries. The Bulldogs have now reeled off 28 consecutive NSIC wins (six shy of the league record established by Minnesota Morris between 1975-79) and will take a school-record 19-game road winning streak into this Saturday's clash with Minnesota Crookston. UMD finally surrendered its first rushing touchdown of the season in Saturday's 40-17 win over St. Cloud State as well as first opening-quarter touchdown of 2010. The Bulldogs have outscored the opposition 107-16 in the first 15 minutes of play thus far. The Bulldogs are 36-2 over their last 38 games and that includes a 9-2 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. Junior wide receiver D.J. Winfield has caught at least one pass in each of his 38 games as a Bulldog (he played in the first half of the 2007 season opener before being knocked out of commission for the seaon with an injury), including the last 37 in a row. True sophomore quarterback Chase Vogler, who is 19-1 as a starter with the Bulldogs, has throw only one interception this fall in 127 passing attempts and has 12 touchdown tosses to his credit. The Bulldogs are 75-1 the last 76 times they have taken a lead into the fourth quarter.

Team at SDSU.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team moved into first place in the region this past Friday and Saturday with a solid show at South Dakota State University (SDSU). The Golden Eagles had trailed North Dakota State University by four points but are now ahead by 22 points after an impressive showing.

"The classes at SDSU were large," says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard.  "Each class had  between ten and 14 riders making ribbons hard to come by."

Karen Carpendo (So, Bessemer, Mich.) and Lisa Schabo (So, Appleton, Wis.) each took first place in the Intermediate Division while Sabra Amundson (Fr, Colton, S.D.) captured a blue ribbon in the Beginner Horsemanship Class. Mitzi Marlin (Fr, Nowthen, Minn.) had a great ride to a second place finish with Melissa Freitag (Fr, Wolverton, Minn.), Kayla Klein (Sr, Hazen, N.D.), Kayla Krueger (So, Walker, Minn.) and Amanda Flint (So, Aberdeen, S.D.) riding to third place finishes in large, difficult classes. U of M, Crookston finished the day with 23 points and a Reserve High Point team finish behind SDSU.

The Saturday horse show saw some great rides with captain Kayla Klein taking second place in Reining and Open Horsemanship to tie for Reserve High Point Rider of the day. Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (Jr, Hawley, Minn.) finished third in the Reining on a nice ride. In the Novice Division, Megan Kramer (Jr, Owatonna, Minn.) and Amanda Flint each won blue ribbons in their classes with Amy Van Treeck (So, Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) picking up third place. Mitzi Marlin rode really well to win her Intermediate Class with Lisa Schabo also took third place. To finish the day, Sabra Amundson's third place ribbon gave her enough points to qualify for the Regional Horse Show. At the end of the day, the Golden Eagles were the High Point Team for the show ahead of SDSU.

"This show was really tough with all of the large classes," says Coach Overgaard. "However, this show is where the team really pulled together to help each other out. It was great to see everyone working so well together.  Before the show, we talked a great deal about having a positive attitude and filling our heads with positive comments. It paid off."
