"I am looking forward to seeing returners Anna Steen (Jr, Hanover, Minn.) and Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (Jr, Hawley, Minn.) continue their show careers after a very successful National Horse Show this past spring."  Megan Kramer (Jr, Owatonna, Minn.) and Kayla Klein (Sr, Hazen, N.D.) worked hard all summer and got in a lot of ride time which Coach Overgaard feels should show in their placings this weekend.  "As always, the first show is a little nerve racking and will be a barometer of how the team is going to really work together to get good ribbons," says Coach Overgaard.

Golden Eagle Football Hosts Dragons for Homecoming 2010

Contact: Mitch Bakken- Sports Information Director (218) 281-8414

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston welcomes back alumni and Golden Eagle fans this week for Homecoming 2010. On Saturday, September 25 the Golden Eagle Football team will host the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at Ed Widseth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Homecoming parade and other festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus.

UMC vs. MSU Mankato: The Golden Eagle offense was led against the Mavericks by David Anderson (RB, 6-0, 180, Jr, Winnipeg, Manitoba) who broke free for a career-high 78 yard run that led to the UMC field goal. He rushed a total of 10 times for 92 yards in the game, good for a 9.2 yards/carry average. Josh Perea (QB, 6-0, 175, Fr, Pico Rivera, Calif.) completed eight passes for 49 yards and hooked up with Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 220, Sr, West Palm Beach, Fla.) four times for 31 of those yards. Leading the defensive core for the Golden Eagles was Cody Hendrickson (DB, 5-10, 185, Jr, Wright, Minn.) who had four tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted). He added one pass break-up and pulled in two big interceptions including one in the Golden Eagle end zone to stop a Maverick drive. Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, So, Edison, Ga.) also had a big day at the defensive back position. He finished the game with a team-high eight tackles (5 solo, 3 assisted).

MSU Moorhead vs. Upper Iowa: Tyrone Small (WR, Sr., 6-4, 195, Bellflower, Calif.) scored on an 82-yard touchdown on a 2-play, 82-yard drive. Small ended the day with three catches for 99 yards, a season high for a Dragon receiver. Joey Dawson (LB, Sr., 6-0, 205, Fargo, N.D.) led the team as he had 9.5 tackles (six solo), with 1.5 for a loss of six yards. The Dragons defense had 80.5 total tackles in the game, over double of what the Peacocks had with 40.0. Patrick Haynes (P/K, 6-0, Jr., Parteeville, Wis.) had big numbers for the Dragons as he punted 10 times, one short of the MSUM game record of 11, for 364 total yards, with three landing within the visitor's 20-yard line. The Dragons (1-2, 1-1 NSIC) snuck by the Upper Iowa Peacocks (0-3, 0-2 NSIC) on big defensive plays late in the second half to pick up the team's first win of the season, 28-24. There were six lead changes in the defensive battle as the Dragons defense had two stops in the red-zone and a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone that carried the momentum in the home team's favor in the final quarter. The Dragons had 263 yards of total offense, 194 coming off passing. In the Dragons second to last possession of the game, the team took the ball from their own 40- yard line to the one-yard line as they capitalized on a penalty by UIU, holding that took an intercepted pass that would have scored back into the hands of the Dragons offense for a first down. After a pass interference call on a third-and-goal, the Dragons' quarterback Kevin Koch ran the ball in from the one-yard line. Wes Kramer would tally the extra point to put the score where it would remain for the game. Kramer ended the game with four extra-point kicks.

Lecher_Jordan10_JPG.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team opened the 2010 season tonight with a non-conference game against Mayville State University at Ed Widseth Field. The Golden Eagles lead by as much as 37-0 with 10:05 remaining in the game before the Comets could find the end zone. At the final buzzer, it was Minnesota, Crookston 37 and Mayville State 6.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring just four minutes into the first quarter when quarterback Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 210, Sr, Lancaster, Calif.) found Jordan Lecher (WR, 6-3, 195, Jr, Litchfield, Minn.) on a 25-yard touchdown strike that completed an eight play, 64-yard drive that took 3:52 off the clock. Minnesota, Crookston was held scoreless until the second half when Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, So, Hollywood, Fla.) nailed a 24-yard field goal to put UMC up 10-0. Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, So, Edison, Ga.) made a big interception to set up that drive and stifle a Comet drive that was on the Golden Eagle 20-yard line. Ten minutes later, Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, So, Lodi, Wis.) scampered for a 2-yard score that capped off a three play, 54-yard drive. The drive was sparked by another Ennis to Lecher connection that covered 43-yards, Lecher's longest reception of the night and the second longest of his career. The Golden Eagles would go into halftime up 17-0.

Brown_Cecil10_JPG.jpgMinnesota, Crookston kept the offensive pressure on in the second half as the team scored 20 more points. At the 11:39 mark of the third quarter and on the first play of the drive, McBride busted a 58-yard touchdown run that set a new career-high. At the 3:27 mark Ennis found Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 220, Sr, West Palm Beach, Fla.) on a career-high 35-yard touchdown pass completion to put the Golden Eagles up 31-0 going into the fourth quarter. Five minutes into the final session, freshman Josh Perea (QB, 6-0, 175, Fr, Pico Rivera, Calif.) took over the reins of the Golden Eagle offense. He got comfortable quickly as he connected with Eric Ogorek (WR, 6-0, 175, So, Hallock, Minn.) for a 60-yard touchdown. It was both player's first collegiate score and current career-high for longest play from scrimmage. Mayville State continued to fight and at the 5:07 mark of the fourth quarter, quarterback Tanner Carpenter found Tony Evenstad in the back of the UMC end zone for a Comet score. The point after was blocked and the Golden Eagles took the victory 37-6.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles offensively was Lecher who caught eight passes for 131-yards (career high) and one touchdown. McBride rushed 11 times for 111-yards (10.1 yards/rush) and two touchdowns. Ennis threw 23 times and completed 15 with one interception. He tallied 225 total yards and two touchdowns. Perea was a perfect 2-2 throwing the ball and earned 66 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Micah Miller (DB, 6-0, 205, So, Chipley, Fla.) also tallied 10 total tackles (2 solo, 8 assisted) and a half of a sack.
