Big Third Quarter Lifts Mavericks Past Golden Eagles

Hendrickson_Cody10_JPG.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team hosted the #16 ranked MSU Mankato Mavericks this afternoon at Ed Widseth Field on the UMC campus. The Golden Eagle defense had a solid performance in the first and second quarters allowing just one score in each session. Minnesota, Crookston got on the board first in the third quarter on a seven play, 84 yard drive that was capped off by a Chris Secrest (K, 5-11, 170, So, Hollywood, Fla.) 24 yard field goal. The Mavericks responded with three touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter to take the game 42-3.
 
The Golden Eagle offense was led today by David Anderson (RB, 6-0, 180, Jr, Winnipeg, Manitoba) who broke free for a career-high 78 yard run that led to the UMC field goal. He rushed a total of 10 times for 92 yards in the game, good for a 9.2 yards/carry average. Josh Perea (QB, 6-0, 175, Fr, Pico Rivera, Calif.) completed eight passes for 49 yards and hooked up with Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 220, Sr, West Palm Beach, Fla.) four times for 31 of those yards. Leading the defensive core for the Golden Eagles was Cody Hendrickson (DB, 5-10, 185, Jr, Wright, Minn.) who had four tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted). He added one pass break-up and pulled in two big interceptions including one in the Golden Eagle end zone to stop a Maverick drive. Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, So, Edison, Ga.) also had a big day at the defensive back position. He finished the game with a team-high eight tackles (5 solo, 3 assisted).
 
Minnesota State-Mankato was led by Will Brogan who completed 19 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Brogan's main target was Cody Rose who caught eight passes for 92 yards and one touchdown. Matt McQuiston led the Maverick defense with a game-high 10 total tackles (8 solo, 2 assisted), one sack, two tackles for a loss of 13 yards and one forced fumble.
 
The Golden Eagles are 1-2 overall and 0-2 in NSIC play. The Mavericks are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference games. Minnesota, Crookston returns to Ed Widseth Field on Saturday, September 25 as the team hosts MSU Moorhead in the UMC Homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
