(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team opens NSIC play this week with three matches. The Golden Eagles travel to MSU Moorhead on September 14 to take on the Dragons before returning home to host Minnesota Duluth on September 17 and Bemidji State on September 18. MSU Moorhead is 4-4, while Bemidji State is 6-2 and Duluth is a perfect 8-0.
UMC: Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, So, Rochester, Mich.) and Danielle Rueter (OH, 5-9, So, Burlington, Wis.) led the Golden Eagle Volleyball team at the University of Missouri- St. Louis Invite. Both outside hitters finished with 34 kills each in 14 sets for a 2.43 k/set average. Swann led the duo in attack percentage with a .216 (34K-13E- 97TA) total. Setters Shannon Cologna (S, 5-8, Sr, Peoria, Ariz.) and Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, So, Sun Prairie, Wis.) battled for the assists lead as well. Cologna finished with 53 while Matykowski finished with 52 in 14 sets. Matykowski also led the squad in total blocks with 10 (1 solo, 9 assisted). Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, Fr, Rochester, Minn.) took the defensive digs title with 65, a 4.64 Dig/S average. She also led UMC with five service aces.
MSU Moorhead: Laura Tvrdik (RS, 6-1, Sr., Farwell, Minn.) becomes the ninth Dragon to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark as she led the Dragons to a victory on Saturday evening over Minot State. On the weekend she had 40 kills (10 per match, 2.85 per set). She led the Dragons in kills in all but one match over the weekend. In her career, she is averaging 2.97 kills per set, after ending the weekend with 1,008 total. She tallied 250 in her rookie campaign and notched 323 and 362 in the last two consecutive seasons. Tvrdik is now 30 kills away from eclipsing the number eight slot for most kills by a Dragon in a career. The magic kill to move Tvrdik over the 1,000 mark came in the second set to put the Dragons up 8-2, and propel them to a 3-1 victory. The Dragons were 3-1 in the Dragon Classic this past weekend as they topped Adelphi (N.Y.), Sioux Falls (S.D.) and Minot State (N.D.). The team was led by Laura Tvrdik who became the ninth member of the 1,000 kills club in the history of Dragon volleyball. She ended the weekend with 1,008 kills in her tenure at MSUM.
Duluth: Alyssa Nelson (Sr., MB, 5-11, Brownsdale, Minn.) led UMD with 39 kills (3.0 per set) over the weekend as the Bulldogs scooped four wins at the fifth annual Nova Southeastern Shark Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Nelson hit .403 good for second on the team in the four matches as No. 5 UMD lost just one set and improved to 8-0 on the season. Eleena Iisakka (Jr. S 5-10 Esko, Minn.) Eleena Iisakka collected 139 assists (10.69 per set) as UMD rolled to its second consecutive 4-0 weekend. Iisakka led the No. 5 Bulldogs who lost just one set all weekend to a team hitting percentage of .311 as they improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season. The Esko, Minn., native also picked up six kills on seven attempts (.857) without committing an error. The University of Minnesota Duluth notched its second 4-0 weekend in as many tries, rolling to four quick victories at the fifth annual Nova Southeastern Shark Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Bulldogs who lost just one set all weekend, finished non-conference play with a perfect 8-0 record to give them their best start since 1987. Alyssa Nelson paced the offense with 39 kills and a .403 attack percentage. April Hansen was close behind with 36 kills, while junior Katie Kuffel and freshman Kate Lange each had 34 on the weekend. Standout setter Eleena Iisakka guided No. 5 UMD to a hit percentage of .311 as she picked up 139 assists. The Bulldogs will begin NSIC play on Tuesday evening with their home opener against Northern State.
Bemidji: Jessi-Beth McCannell (Jr., S, Brandon, Manitoba) averaged 11.15 assists per game this weekend as the Beavers picked up three 3-0 sweeps and finished 3-1 at the Dragon Classic in Moorhead, Minn. McCannell notched four games with over 30 assists including a 42 assist performance against the University of Sioux Falls. McCannell has 307 assists on the season and is averaging 10.96 per game. Brie Groskreutz (Sr., Lib., Reedsburg, Wis.) averaged 5.69 digs/game in four games at the Dragon Classic helping BSU deliver three consecutive sweeps against Minot State, Adelphi and Sioux Falls. She had 31 digs against conference foe Northern State despite a loss for the Beavers. So far this season Groskreutz is averaging 5.29 digs in 28 games.
