(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team returns from the road this Saturday, September 18 to host Minnesota State-Mankato at Ed Widseth Field. The Golden Eagles look to return to the win column after suffering a loss to Wayne State on Saturday, September 11. The Mavericks are 2-0 overall and ranked #16 after defeating Northern State 21-14 last weekend.
UMC vs. Wayne: The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team traveled to Wayne, Neb. on September 11 to battle the #22 ranked Wayne State Wildcats to open the NSIC season. The Golden Eagles were looking to add to their winning streak after defeating Mayville State on September 2, 37-6. Wayne State was also riding a big non-conference victory over #13 Nebraska-Kearney 24-17 in overtime. If the bus ride wasn't long enough, three key offensive injuries early slowed the Golden Eagle offense.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was freshman Josh Perea (QB, 6-0, 175, Fr, Pico Rivera, Calif.) who took over the offense after UMC's starting quarterback was injured. Perea completed seven passes for 85 yards with a long pass of 34 yards. Brett Rice (RB, 5-10, 175, So, Poynette, Wis.) took over for the injured starting running back and rushed for 47 yards on 19 carries.
The Minnesota, Crookston defense was led by Casey Byram (DB, 5-11, 175, Jr, Devils
Lake, N.D.) who tied a game-high with eight total tackles (6 solo, 2 assisted).
MSU vs. Northern: Will Brogan (QB, 6-1, 210, So., Ponte Verde, Fla./Canyon HS) finished MSU's 21-14 win over Northern State by completing 10-of-24 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. He completed touchdown passes of 64, 7 and 71 yards.
Matt McQuiston (LB, 6-2, 215, Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) finished MSU's win over Northern State with 12 tackles, eight of which were solo to lead all players.
Notes: Saturday's win was the 369th in program history...The win also pushed MSU's record to 4-1 all-time over Northern State...All four of Minnesota State's touchdowns this season have been via the air, and all four have been thrown by sophomore quarterback Will Brogan...Sophomore wideout Adam Thielen has caught three touchdown passes this season...Half of Thielen's catches this season have been touchdown catches...Minnesota State finished with 10 tackles for a loss in its win over Northern State...Redshirt freshman Chris Schaudt led the squad with three tackels for loss in the loss...Saturday's game at Minnesota, Crookston is the first ever meeting between the two schools.
