(Moorhead, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team traveled to Moorhead, Minn. tonight to take on the Dragons of MSU Moorhead in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season opener. MSU Moorhead took the first two sets 25-19, 25-20. The Golden Eagles responded with a third set win 25-23 but the Dragons took the fourth set 25-15 to take the match 3-1.
The first set saw the two team's trade leads until the score was tied 18-18. The Dragons closed out the set on a 7-1 run to take the first set win. The MSU Moorhead offense finished strong again in the second set as they broke a 20-20 tie and went on a 5-0 run to close out the set. Minnesota, Crookston paid back the Dragons after the break with a 25-23 set victory after the teams were tied 23-23. MSU Moorhead used a 14-4 run in the fourth and final set to defeat Minnesota, Crookston and take the match. The two teams combined for 10 lead changes and 28 tie scores in the match.
Sophomore Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, So, Rochester, Mich.) led the Golden Eagle offense with 10 kills. She added six defensive digs and one service ace. Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, So, Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Shannon Cologna (S, 5-8, Sr, Peoria, Ariz.) split time at the setter position and split the assists with 11 apiece. Defensive specialist Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, Fr, Rochester, Minn.) continues to play solid for Minnesota, Crookston as she again led the squad with 12 defensive digs.
MSU Moorhead was led by Laura Tvrdik who finished with a match-high 13 kills. Ashley Feldman followed Tvrdik with 11 kills and a team-high .435 (11K-1E-23TA) attack percentage. Dragon setter Leigh Splittstoesser led all players with 31 assists and added a match-high four service aces. MSU Moorhead combined for 98 defensive digs, of which, 28 were from Katy Ness who earned a match-high.
The Golden Eagles are 0-9 overall and 0-1 in NSIC play. MSU Moorhead advances to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston hosts Minnesota Duluth on Friday, September 17 at 7 p.m. UMC returns to the court on Saturday, September 18 to take on Bemidji State. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
