(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team opened home conference play tonight against Concordia University- St. Paul on "White Out" Night at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Bears shot 46 percent in the first half to take a 38-28 lead and exploded in the second half to shoot 54 percent and take the 89-56 victory.
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively through the first 20 minutes of play. Zabel was 2-3 from the field, 1-1 from long range, and 4-4 from the free-throw line for a total of nine points. Wiese was 4-6 from the field and 1-3 from the free-throw line to tie Zabel with nine points. The Golden Bears were led by Kali Olstad who had nine points of her own to help Concordia University to a 10 point first half lead 38-28.
The Golden Bears found the hot hand in the second half and led by as much as 37 points. Zabel and Wiese continued to be the offensive support for the Golden Eagles. Zabel ended the game with a total of 15 points going 4-8 from the field, 2-2 from long range, 5-6 from the free-throw line, and added five rebounds to her night. Wiese finished the night 6-10 from the field, 1-3 from the free-throw line for a total of 13 points. Wiese also led the Golden Eagles with three total steals.
The Golden Bears brought their offense tonight getting five players in double-digits for points. They were led by Kali Olstad who was 6-11 from the field, an impressive 6-11 from deep for a total of 18 points. Olstad did her part defensively chalking up six rebounds. Gillian Bjerke added 13 points, Jamie Jones tallied 12 points, Maurika Hickman had 11 points, and Jineen Williams earned 10 points to close out the top Concordia scorers. In addition to 10 points, Williams dished a game-high six assists in the contest.
The Golden Eagles are 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears advance to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. UMC returns to the court tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to host the Huskies of St. Cloud State University.
