(Bemidji, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball played its second NSIC contest of the season tonight as they visited Bemidji State University. The Golden Eagles shot 51 percent in the first half to take a 46-35 lead. The Beavers rallied in the second half and with some untimely Golden Eagle fouls they pulled within four points but the Minnesota, Crookston defense tightened to edge the Beavers 92-88.
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) led all scorers through the first 20 minutes of play with 13 points. She was 4-5 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) led all players with five rebounds while Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added a half-high three assists. The Beavers were led by Emily Kaus who had nine points.
Zabel added 13 points for the Golden Eagles in the second half to lead all scorers with 26 points in the game. Zelinsky followed Zabel with 21 points and a team-high two blocks and two steals. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) played a solid game scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting. Brittany Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) added eight second half points to finish with 12.
Bemidji was led by Katie Pettit who had 17 points, three assists and a gam-high four steals. Anna Hebrink followed Pettit with 12 points in the contest.
The Golden Eagles advance to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC while the Beavers fall to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Minnesota, Crookston returns home next weekend to host Concordia- St. Paul and St. Cloud State University in conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Friday's game features Faculty/Staff and Teambacker appreciation night, "White Out" Night and Elementary Education Night where elementary students get free admission to the game.
