on, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Softball team closed out play at the Cocoa Expo with a two-game sweep of Sweet Briar College and Knox College. The Golden Eagles defeated the Vixens 8-0 in six innings and followed that game up with a 6-2 victory over the Prairie Fire.
UMC vs. SBC: Sweet Briar College held the Golden Eagle offense to just two runs through four innings of play before Minnesota, Crookston exploded for six runs to end the game in the sixth inning. UMC was led by Kayla Bowar (SS, 5-4, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) who was 3 for 4 (.750) with a 1.500 slugging percentage. She tallied three runs scored, two RBI and belted a two-run homerun in the sixth inning. Krystal Plouff (OF, 5-2, SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) closed out the game with a walk-off homerun for the eight run rule in the bottom of the sixth. Stacey Marcum (P, 5-7, Fr, Merrill, Wis.) and Erin Fowle (P, 5-8, FR, Winnipeg, Manitoba) combined for a two-hit shutout while striking out seven.
UMC vs. Knox: The Prairie Fire jumped out to an early 2-0 with a two RBI double by Brianna Collishaw. The Golden Eagles erased that deficit in the bottom of the second inning when they put three runs on the board. The lead was added to in the top off the seventh when Jessica Grinnell (OF, 5-9, SO, Waconia, Minn.) hit a three-run triple with two outs to take a 6-2 lead. Steph Thomas (P, 5-9, JR, St. Albert, Alberta) earned her first win of the season. She gave up just four hits and two runs while striking out six Knox batters. Fowle closed out the game for her first save of the season. The Golden Eagles batted .406 as a team in the contest.
Krystal Plouff (OF, 5-2, SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles in Florida. In six games, she was 7 for 18 (.389) with two runs scored, two RBI and a homerun. Kayla Bowar was 6 for 19 (.316) with four runs scored, three RBI and one homerun. The Minnesota, Crookston pitching staff went 2-4 with a 3.23 ERA. The trio of Marcum, Fowle and Thomas struck out 36 batters while walking just eight.
The Golden Eagles open the NSIC season on April 2 and 3 when they host Augustana College and Wayne State College. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on April 2 and noon on April 3.
