Beavers Sweep Golden Eagles in Baseball Doubleheader

croal_devin_10.jpg nockleby_erik_10.jpg(Crookston, Minn.)- Bemidji State University (BSU) scored 15 runs on 26 hits in two games as the Beavers swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the University of Minnesota, Crookston Friday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. BSU took game one 7-0 and game two 8-4. It was the season opener for both Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) squads.

Game One Recap

The Beavers scored runs in every inning except the first on their way to the 7-0 shutout victory. Nick Jelacie led the BSU attack going 4-for-4, including a triple, with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Brian Murphy went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Starter Ryan Sander went six innings surrendering three of the four U of M, Crookston hits while striking out five and walking two. Steve Schroer (So, RHP, Coon Rapids, Minn.) threw five innings for the Golden Eagles allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Game Two Recap

The nightcap saw the Beavers lead off the game with a solo homerun to left-center by Joe Chism as they took a 3-0 lead after the first half an inning. The Golden Eagles responded quickly as Devin Croal (So, SS, Coon Rapids, Minn.) hit an inside-the-park three run homerun to help U of M, Crookston take a 4-3 lead after the first inning. Unfortunately, it was not to be for the Golden Eagles as BSU added a run in the top-half of the fifth and four more in the top-half of the seventh to take the 8-4 victory. BSU's Chism ended up 3-for-5 as did Josh Silvernagel. Jelacie, Sander and Dan Bauer each added two hits with Sander knocking in two runs and Jelacie and Bauer adding one each. Erik Nockleby (So, OF, Roseville, Minn.) added two hits for the Golden Eagles. Paul Myers (So, RHP, Arden Hills, Minn.) threw 6.2 innings for U of M, Crookston allowing seven runs on 14 hits while striking out four and walking two. Ethan Branum threw 2.2 innings in relief for the Beavers to get the win. He gave up no hits while striking out one and walking none.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 0-2 on the young season while Bemidji State University is 2-0. The Golden Eagles will not return to action until Sunday, February 28 when they travel to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome again to face NSIC foe Northern State University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
