Golden Eagle Softball Drops First Two Games at Cocoa Expo

(Crookston, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston's Women's Softball team opened their 2010 Cocoa Expo games today after being rained out the previous two days. The Golden Eagles, who hit well to open the season on February 28, had their bats go silent as they fell 4-2 to Delaware Valley College and 3-0 to Rhodes College.
 
UMC vs. DVC: Minnesota, Crookston held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when Delaware Valley scored four runs to take the 4-2 win. The Golden Eagles were led by Krystal Plouff (OF, 5-2, SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) who was 1 for 2 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI. Erin Fowle (DP, 5-8, FR, Winnipeg, Manitoba) added the only other Golden Eagle hit. Stacey Marcum (P, 5-7, Fr, Merrill, Wis.) tallied the other RBI on a fielder's choice ground out. She threw 5.2 innings and struck out four batters. The Golden Eagles left five runners on base in the contest.
 
UMC vs. Rhodes College: Minnesota, Crookston earned five hits in the second game but left four runners on base. Plouff again led the Golden Eagles going 2 for 2 at the plate. Steph Thomas (P, 5-9, JR, St. Albert, Alberta) threw outstanding in her first start of the season. Thomas threw four innings and gave up only four hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. Fowle came in to close out the final three innings. She gave up four hits, two runs and struck out two batters.
 
The Golden Eagles return to the field on Tuesday, March 16. UMC will play UMass-Lowell in a double-header starting at 11:00 a.m. The team closes out their Florida games on Wednesday, March 17 when they play Sweet Briar at 9:00 a.m. followed by Knox College at 11:00 a.m.
