(Crookston, Minn.) - The University of Minnesota, Crookston's Women's Softball team opens the 2010 campaign this Sunday, February 28 at the Husky Dome Invite in St. Cloud, Minn. The Golden Eagle will play Dakota State at 5:00 p.m. and St. Cloud State in a non-conference game immediately after.
Dakota State is 0-0 on the season but will have three games in by the time they meet the Golden Eagles. St. Cloud State is also 0-0 and will have five games in before they meet Minnesota, Crookston. This will be the first competition for the Golden Eagles this season.
"The players and I are ready to get the season started. We have accomplished a lot of things in the gym and in the batting cages but I think everyone is ready to play some outside competition and see where we stack up," says Head Coach Mitch Bakken. "The returners have been great leaders to all the new players and have helped them adjust to the requirements of a Division II softball program. The biggest unknown is how long it will take for them to adjust to the DII tempo in the NSIC but I think with their abilities it will be a quick adjustment," adds Bakken.
Following the games in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Crookston travels to the Cocoa Expo for spring training in Titusville, Fla. The squad will play 10 games from March 12-17 before returning home. The conference season is scheduled to open at home on April 2 and 3 against Augustana College and Wayne State. Game times are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on April 2 and noon on April 3.
The Golden Eagles have one of the largest rosters in program history this season. The squad welcomes back five returners and adds 10 newcomers, including seven true freshmen.
