(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team hosted Mary tonight with a playoff berth still on the line with a win and some help. The Golden Eagles led by three points at the 19:41 mark of the first half but Mary regained the lead and went up by as many as 16 points at the 5:23 mark of the second half to take the NSIC victory 82-70.
The Golden Eagles were trailing the Marauders 31-42 after the first 20 minutes of play. The University of Minnesota, Crookston was not able to defend against the long range shot with the Marauders going 5 of 12 from long range for 15 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles spread their offense out with Diana Taddy (G, 5-6, JR, Two Rivers, Wis.) putting up seven points while Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) scored six points of their own in the first half. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) led the way in rebounds for University of Minnesota, Crookston with five rebounds all of which came on the defensive side of the ball. Leading the way for the Marauders was Liz Sipma with 11 points and four rebounds. Kayla Rogers had nine points all coming from beyond the arc.
In total, the Golden Eagles were led by Zelinsky who was 5 of 13 from the field, 1 of 3 from long range, and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line for 18 points. Zabel recorded a respectable 16 points going 5 of 10 from the field, 2 of 3 from long range, and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Tyson tallied her second double-double of the season tonight scoring 10 points and recording 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
The Marauders were led by Liz Sipma who was 8 of 14 from the field, 1 of 1 from long range, and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line for a total of 23 points. Sipma also led the University of Mary with eight rebounds. Rachel Zillmer recorded 18 points in the game for the Marauders. Marlee Finley had a good night going 5 of 9 from the field and 4 of 6 from deep for 14 points. The Marauders were 12 of 21 from long range in the game.
The Golden Eagles fall to 10-16 overall and 7-12 in Northern Sun play while the Marauders advance to 10-16 overall and 6-13 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court on Saturday, February 27 when they play MSU Moorhead on Senior/Parent Day. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
