Golden Eagle Football Travels to St. Cloud to Take on #23 Ranked Huskies

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Football team looks to forget about last week's game as quickly as possible. This week the Golden Eagles will be breaking down film on the #23 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies. UMC travels to St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, October 23 to do battle with SCSU in an NSIC match-up. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m.

UMC vs. Northern State: The Golden Eagle Football team hosted Northern State University on Saturday in an NSIC match-up. The Wolves offense and defense combined for a stellar game as NSU defeated UMC 38-0. U of M, Crookston was led by Keith McBride (So, RB, Lodi, Wis.) who had 15 carries for 102 yards with a long of 32 yards and a 6.8 yards/carry average. The defense was led by Cecil Brown (DB, 5-10, 205, So, Edison, Ga.) who tallied a career-high 12 assisted tackles and 17 total tackles. Casey Byram (DB, 5-11, 175, Jr, Devils Lake, N.D.) also had an outstanding defensive day with seven solo tackles and 11 total tackles.

St. Cloud vs. Southwest Minnesota State: Phillip Klaphake (QB, Fr., Princeton, Minn.) did the majority of offensive damage for the Huskies in a 24-6 win over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon as he put up 454 of the 494 total yards by the offense. He was 24-for-33 with 320 yards and a score through the air and rushed for a career-high 134 yards on 12 carries and a 33-yard touchdown. Klaphake has 408 total rushing yards and five scores on the ground this season and has completed 116-of-178 passes for 1,680 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has an astonishing 170.7 efficiency rating and has average 240 yards in the air. Klaphake started the game passing 6-for-6 and then decided to do it with his legs, going 33-yards on a nifty run to make it 14-0 to put an end to the scoring in the first quarter. Four plays into the second quarter of a 24-6 SCSU win over the SMSU, senior captain nose guard Josh Popanda (Twin Lakes, Wis.) grabbed a mishandled ball out of mid-air and took it 78-yards to the house for the first score of his career to put the Huskies up 21-0. Popanda finished with five tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss to go with his score for the Husky red and black. The St. Cloud State University football team won their sixth straight game thanks to a hot start and a strong defensive presence that nearly pitched their first shutout of the season with a 24-6 win over Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium. The Huskies (6-1, 6-0 NSIC, 2-0 NSIC North) scored 21 points in the first 15:25 of the game and held the Mustangs (3-4, 2-4 NSIC, 0-2 NSIC South) scoreless until the final 2:36 of the game.
